  1. Hey mate, did you try that spot i told you about down by Narrabeen lake?

    Give it a go!

    Hi All,

Just started fishing and love it only thing is i haven't caught any fish nor actually know what im doing as in how to look for fish, where to cast, etc.

Fished at palm beach wharf and roseville bridge.

Any advice would be great, i have 2 setups 1 for bream and flat head and another for king fish.

Don't have boat and live in castle hill so i don't mind traveling pretty much anywhere.

    Thank everyone

  2. Hey raiders, In Nov i am heading down on a family holiday to Currarong.

I have never fished there before and due to a limited amount of time i will be able to head out fishing i was wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction. What is the beach fishing like down there? I was hoping to hit the beach at night for a jewie????? I will also bring down my yack to explore the headlands. Where is the best spot to get live bait??

    any LBG spots?????

    tips would be appreciated!

  3. I have been hitting pittwater lately on the kayak and have been getting some nice size squid. It is a good change, as in Summer/Autumn i didn't really get many at all!!!

I landed this guy on a yamashita 2.5g squid jig in the natural colour range. He went really hard taking drag so i thought it might be an Occy. I didn't want to take the chance, so I slowly brought him in. When I got him in the yak I got ink all over me, but that doesn't matter. HE TASTED BEUTIFUL!!

It is always hard to decide between eating the squid or using it as bait for a jewie, but i am glad i did!!!!

Simple recipe: flour, salt, pepper and lemon juice. Deep fried for 20 seconds.

  4. Hey John! Funny you should say that....... Yes i did!!!ranting2.gif

I think there is a bad batch going around and they are flogging it off online. Funny though the packaging was perfect. Did the ones you buy break well under their Lb rating or was it something else?

    Neil

hey just a thought r u buying your line from a well known auction site, cause if u r the line quality could be faulty.I only say this cause i bought sevral rolls of different sizes & all was faulty maybe u got the same ......

    cheers john

  5. Just sent you a P.M

    This is very interesting!

Thanks for the post Mushtaka, I have meaning to ask a similar question, so unfortunately I cant answer yours. I have brand new 50lb power pro braid (hasnt been out fishing) and was playing around measuring the drag settings with spring scales and found it to be breaking between 10 and 12 kg (22-25lb). I have since tested the line off the real and get a similar result. Sometimes it breaks at the swivel I had it tied to and others in the centre of the length of line (2-4m).

I then started testing other lines and got about 15kg out of 60lb black magic flourocarbon leader.I started to doubt the scales and started weighing things like fuel cans etc and they seem to be pretty close. I though maybe I was jerking the line as I was pulling the scales and suspended the weights under the line instead the result was still the same. So my questions are:

Should the line hold 50lb of dead weight which is what I thought the breaking strain meant.

Isn't braid suppose to be stronger than its claimed strength.

What is the best braid to swivel knot or should I attach a leader first.

I seemed to of developed a talent for finding ways of losing good fish and dont really want to add anymore to the list so your advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jason

  6. Hey guys, there are no cuts or scratches in my reel or guides. I can see the braid is weakened before i even cast into the water. It happens when i tie a bimni twist. Just above the bimni the braid seems to untwist and fray. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem with Power pro braid?

    Thanks!

  7. Hey everyone!

I have been losing a few great fish lately!ranting2.gif

The reason I have been losing them is because my braid snaps. At first I thought I was bitten off by a shark but it seemed to be happening to often. After I lost a good fish tonight I look at where the line snapped and it was up on my main line, to far from where toothy critters could bite me off. I went to tie my bimni twist again to rig up and I found that just above my twist going up the braid the braid seems to untwist and some strands were even snapped!!! This is definitely where the weak spot is! It is brand new braid 30lb Power pro. Am I doing something wrong? It never happened when I did the same twist with other brands of braid???

Has anyone else had this problem with powerpro braid?

    Thanks!

  8. Snooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooook!!! thats what i think is eating all my squid in Pittwater... As soon as i drop a jig they are quick too it

    Cheers SquidKing Combo

Plenty of Snook in Pittwater tonight! There were so many i could smell them!

No Squid yet again. I did lose a good one in close though.

  9. Pitt Water has been very slow for squid this year!!!!! I have been going out a few times a week for the past few months and have hardly landed any.

This time last year i would bag about 8 or 10 each time!!!!

  10. Hey buddy that's a nice kingy, sounds like a top place to fish I used to surf out there many moons ago.

Hope ya get plenty more and stay safe out there, not for me after what I've seen lurking under boats..

    Thanks Ray!

You guys are not filling me with great confidence with all this shark talk!!!

I used to own a boat and have seen whats down there too!

I think i will go out with other people next time and also get a shark Shield.

I landed a nice bronze whaler off the sand on Narrabeen beach the other week so they are around.

Love reading your reports from the central coast mate! Keep them coming!!!!

    Neil

  11. Hi Mushtaka,

Very nice first king out of a yak, you will make the rest of the kayak frat very jealous. Nice to see some volume of kings showing up at last. All yakers who fish offshore have stories of things that go 'bump in the night' up against the yak. Big sharks are not common but when they do show up they seem fascinated by yaks and there is very little between you and the yak. And yes Steve WAS bumped by the GWS at longy that is why he ended up in the water. It is a natural health hazzard while chasing big schools of fish.

I use a shark shield as does a lot of the regular crew (google shark shield for details) either putting the antenna down the scupper, attaching it to a rod holder or PFD, just be sure to tether it as they are expensive kit to loose. The yak community jury is still out on whether they will work in all circumstances, but they certainly do work and for me some thing is better than nothing. I also use it in the harbour as the Bull Sharks have been known to hassle yaks as well. When you have blood and guts leaking down the skuppers you are just a bloody great burley cage to a bitey.

I am pretty sure the SS would deter a 'curiosity' bite, not so sure if it would work if it is in full on predator mode. Half the people who survive shark attacks never see the shark comming and many never see it at all. I would bet that of the fatilities the percentage who never saw the shark coming was a lot higher. I am always happy when a bitey shows itself.

    David

    Thanks Roberta and Southerly!!!

I think i know what i will be asking for this this christmas!!!!!!

I will look into buying one ASAP.

Southerly if you ever go out and are looking for someone to tag along P.M me. I would love to head out with a few other people.

    Thanks again!

    Neil

  12. Hi Roberta, NOW YOU ARE SCARING ME!!!

I was feeling a bit nervous out there with all the bait fish around.

Do you think a shark would try and push me off??? I know there was a scare out there a few years ago. But i think that bloke just fell off his yak when he was trying to get in another persons boat after he saw the shark.

I might have to get one i think????

Are they expensive? Are there special ones for yaks?

Maybe P.M if you know of specific brands ect...

    Thanks!

    Mushtaka

  13. This morning i took out my Kayak for the first time. LOVED IT!

I had a great time out off long reef throwing metals around and getting stuck into the Kings!

The original plan was to just get some livies to throw off the beach tonight, but that plan went out the window when i saw a school of Kings!!

I saw a school busting up so i got stuck into them. I pulled in a nice king that went 60cm. Back in he went and was looking for them again.

It took about 1/2 hour to find them. I looked down in the water and there they were just hanging down deep under my Yack. I dropped down my metal and i was on!!!! I have never been connected to a descent fish off a yack before but it was great! The nose of my yack just went in the direction of the kingy and i glided along the water . After a good fight, up came a 80cm king!!! yahoo.gif

I ended up landing another 3 rat kingies all at 64cm!!! Bummer just under legal size limit! All were returned to grow a bit more for next time!

I cant wait to head out there again!!!!

  14. Good work on the squid! I love salt and pepper squid my favourite, but the problem is they are the kingies favourite meal too! Im always torn between keeping them to eat or using them as bait.

We have tried the squid lights off a wharf. You're right they keep the yackas around but not to sure about the squid. Then again if the bait fish are around the squid wont be to far behind.

Hope you get that kingie soon!

    Mushtaka

    Howdy Raiders,

Went out for a quick evening session yesterday before the all the light was gone. Tried a few of the closer reefs for kings but no takers. Came back into the harbour to try a few spots for squid and ended up with 4 arrows and a big calamari, the hood went 45 and felt like a horse on my 2-4kg stick. I had my doubts I was going to be able ot land him. Outstretched, he was longer than my bait tank. Calamari for dinner, yummo!! Caught another squid at the boat ramp too at the end of the night too. Hopefully I can trade them in for a kingie next trip.

I have installed some squid lights on the transom of my boat. They seem to keep the bait fish entertained and I caught one small arrow in the light but not conclusive as to whether they actually attract squid. Jury is still out. They look very cool though!

    Cheers

  15. Hey guys, just got back from a really fun fishing mission.

It all started as we got down there. My Mate turned to me and said "i think i need to re spool my reel" as he only had about a quarter of a spool left. I said "i bet you get spooled tonight". He just laughed and said "what ever"We started just before low tide and had lots of fun catching Salmon. He caught the first one and it went one went 61cm. Then i landed another that went 68cm!We were running out of bait so i said to my mate while holding up one of our Salmon "there's always a bigger fish" he just laughed at me and thought i was joking. Anyway we through out big slabs of Salmon in hope for a Jewie. Within the next half hour I landed 2 massive port jackson sharks each around the 10kg mark. Then as i was just about to send out another slab my mates rod buckles over and it went like a fright train......It just did not stop......I told him to tighten up his drag as he was getting really low with line peeling off and then it happened...snap!!! SPOOLED!!!!We called it for a big shark as it had some good head shakes.

Anyway, i ened up with two more big port jackson sharks all of them returned to the water.

What a great night! WE WILL BE BACK!!! I can feel that jewie just around the corner.

  16. Nice one Peter!

That is a great Blackie! Hope the lake starts to fire up soon!!!

I have been down at North Curly but have only been catching big Port Jacksons. I'm sure it will pay off soon.

  17. I went and grabbed a coffee this morning and went down the beach. I saw a missive school of Salmon or Tailor working about 150m off the beach with birds trying to get in on the action... So they are around!

It was out just south of the pines.

    Mushtaka

  18. Definitely mate!pretty sure we're heading down on thursday if you're around

I will see how things work out at home with the new bub....

I didn't end up going out tonight.

I will keep checking the gutters along the beach for ya and let you know the best place to go.

  19. That's a ripper!I hear there's one of those cuttle fish waiting for me to use as bait ;)

Yeah mate its ready to go! Hope it pays off for you. You should come out with us next time!

I think i might head down again in the next few nights.
