  1. They do look great! Pricey though. We've been thinking of making our own. You can get the same foam the pre-fab ones use, 2m X 1m long strips 10cm thick, for a few hundred $$. I'm sure the suppliers would happily slice it into strips. It wouldn't be as thick as the Kapten ones, but it would surely still make a difference With a heavier than ideal 30hp on our tinnie some added buoyancy would be great!
  2. We didn't burley up a great deal to be honest, apart from handfuls of chopped up pillies. Thought that burleying would just attract the pickers! Maybe that's where we were going wrong?
  3. Fun weekend on the water with the new tinnie we purchased. Picked it up on Friday afternoon and headed straight out into Middle Harbour. Launched at Roseville and tried a few spots around Bantry Bay and up towards Seaforth, using fresh squid and pilchards. Not a great deal of activity, as there was either no bites, or little buggers hammering our baits. We did have a king underneath us for a while at one point, but not interested in any of our baits or lures being just being curious. Pretty frustrating! Tried weighted and unweighted baits, stickbaits, metal lures, Rapala hardbodies, but no luck. Then on Saturday launched early in the morning from Clontarf beach (note: it's a hell of a lot easier to launch than retrieve there, with wheels spinning in the sand. Luckily a group of blokes having a bbq nearby came over and helped us drag the tinnie over the beach). We then tried either side of the spit, as well as near Clontarf Marina, and popped over towards Balmoral to try there also. We had whole squid down again and were trying our best to get some live yakkas. All we managed to get was dozens of tiny snapper and leatherjackets in several spots on the our rigs targeting livies, and not much activity on the squid we had out... Sunday was a day at home, then Monday headed out again, this time to Pittwater. We first filled a bucket with live poddies we caught at Narrabeen Lake, thinking at least something live should get us some action. Launched at Bayview around lunch time, did a loop around Scotland Island, then along the eastern side through the moorings. Mainly just tied on to unoccupied buoys, and anchored in a few places also. Again very quiet apart from 1 or 2 of the spots we tried, where we pulled in more pinkies, but at least bigger than the ones in Middle Harbour, and some almost legal size. Finally right before heading home we landed a decent 34cm bream on a strip of squid, and that was a keeper. There was a storm rolling in and it probably would have been a hot time for some action, but we didn't want to risk getting stuck out there at sunset with the storm clouds overhead. Overall, a fun weekend, but nowhere near the action we were hoping for. Maybe we were in the wrong spots, or the conditions just didn't have them on the bite, who knows... Keen to try Pittwater again soon. It seemed nicer than Middle Harbour and the fish were at least a bit bigger. Hopefully more luck catching live yakkas next time. Also need to learn where some of the wrecks or reefs are around there, might go out with someone who knows the area better than i do. Thinking it would also be a good idea to invest in a fishfinder.... If anyone has any tips for spots around Pittwater or Middle Harbour I'd love to hear them. Or any other suggestions for how we could improve on chasing the big ones
  4. Not too sure! I'll see if the plates mention anything. I know the previous owner bought it unregistered and had to have the plates arranged and attached etc. so it might be a bit of a mystery.
  5. Cheers everyone! Will certainly put up a post about how we go Super excited to get out on the water. I used to fish Bantry Bay area loads back in the day, but too old/fat/lazy to do the bushwalk from the oval these days And always fantasized about having a boat down there. Might pop over to Forty Baskets also depending on the weather and how we're feeling
  6. First boat (with a motor anyway!) Teamed up with a mate and went halves in this little beauty. Figured it'll get more use by both of us owning it. Mighty keen to get out on the water this weekend, maybe around middle harbour. See if we can get onto the kings while they're still around. If we manage a spot at the ramps in the area that is, they'll probably be mighty busy Hopefully smooth sailing. The 30hp outboard should give it a solid push
  7. Awesome thanks for the tip Rick! Will definitely consider it. Have found lake mac quiet the past few times we were there so keen to try somewhere new
  8. Alternatively, anyone have any beliefs that Tuggerah Lake or Brisbane Waters are any better?
  9. Hey raiders! I'm heading back up to lake macquarie this weekend for another day on the water. Our past few trips have seemed very quiet there though. Most times we've been out there we haven't seen much action on other boats either. Has everyone had the same experience? Wondering if anyone has had any luck or has any tips for landing fish there bigger than all the tiny bream and snapper that seem to be around! We've caught a few good flatties over the past summer, but apart from that it has mostly been annoying (very) undersized bream and snapper. We'll be in a tinnie so can go just about anywhere. Have tried lots of different spots but found little difference. We've also tried a variety of baits and not noticed anything work particularly well, except for live poddies which worked great for the flatties. Any advice? Recommended spots? Recommended baits?
  10. Yeah i tried there a few weeks ago, but literally none over 5cm. Maybe it was just an off day. Tempted to try the shallower sandy banks on either side of the Spit itself also, I'm sure there would be some there at times.
  11. Nice. Might give the wharf a go some time soon. I used to fish there regularly as a kid, near the ferris wheel. Assumed it was now prohibited, but hadn't actually checked. Loads of big leatherjacket and bream there back in the day.
  12. Anyone have an idea of the pollution levels and risks of Manly Lagoon? It was one of my favourite spots about 15 years ago, plenty of flathead, bream, and trevally near the beach end, and bass, perch, even mangrove jack further upstream (all catch and release of course, as even then before the golf course incident it was already pretty polluted). Seems like it would be a good place for gathering live bait (mullet), but is it safe to walk out into the water? Can't seem to find any information online.
  13. Have recently gotten right back into fishing after 5-10 years of inactivity. Great reading on here, some useful info Quick question for Northern Beaches raiders. Any recommended spots for catching poddy mullet in traps apart from Narrabeen Lagoon? Anywhere around Middle Harbour? I've been quite disappointed with results from fishing the area recently but have mainly been using store bought frozen bait, so keen to give it a good go with livies before summer ends. I live near Manly though, so Narrabeen is a bit of a mission, especially when there is traffic. Any suggestions? Tried the sand flats at Clontarf a few weeks ago but the mullet were too small. Have heard upstream from Roseville bridge can be good. Anywhere else?
