  1. Good on you getting out. I never have much luck with floats. Nice bream.
  2. Just ate the squid with home made fried rice. Went down a treat. Just rice flour and salt and pepper and fried in good oil. Yummo. Sure does beat working. I take as much time off as I can.......to fish of course 😁 And thanks, pics came from go pro strapped to chest. Does alot better than I do at recording the moment. 😄 Cheers
  3. Hi, Fished the rising tide today at putty beach off the rocks, with the aim of getting something decent for dinner. Landed a squid in 30 mins and then used the head and guts for baits and landed a stingray and wobby. Nothing decent to take home other than the bait 😋
  4. Morning, With bub in bed early last night the decision was made to head out to putty beach and soak a few pillies. Got there and was set up by 9. Didn't check the weather forecast. I knew it was low tide around midnight but didn't know swell or wind conditions. Was nice in carpark but very windy on the beach. Luckily it was at my back. Within 10 mins I had an enquiry and brought in a small octopus. He went back in. Then the next 2 baits got smashed. First was a very decent flathead around the 80 cm mark that put up a great fight. Hooked neatly in the corner of the mouth. Quick photoshoot and back in the drink. Then next cast was a shovel nose. I can't escape them. 🤔 He was actually hooked in the wing on a circle hook. Then everything went quiet. Stayed for 2 hrs then home to bed. Was nice to watch the lightning down the northern beaches. Looking to windy to back tonight. Cheers
  5. Thanks for the heads up connico. Don't think I will bother if they were as small I come across. 🙄 But always good to know. Thanks for the advice. Good info. I suppose it could turn a poor day into a successful one. Cheers.
  6. Yeah I was thinking about crab traps but will have to go further afield as I'm based in Brissy waters and U can't trap. Yeah Burley log is a good idea and I do use them for stock but these are a bit old for that I think. 🤔 Was thinking more about actual baiting with them, maybe shark baits as has been suggested. Just wondering really and was curious to see what others do and have experienced. Love the idea of leaving in a tackle bag.......we all have one of those friends. Hahahaha Cheers
  7. Cheers guys. thanks for the info. And yeah heat is a killer lately. Southerly has just cooled things down her near Woy Woy. I suppose wrasse is a generic term I use for the little fish you catch around the weed off the rocks. Don't really know if they are good to eat. Like these things among others.
  8. Hi, Headed out at midday today, armed with leftover frozen prawns and some soft plastics to see what was around. Hot hot hot in the sun but to be expected. Landed a couple wrasse and what I think is a baby grouper ? Can anyone shed some light ? Cheers
  9. I try to use all my fish caught from tip to tail where possible but sometimes things slip through the cracks. ( Literally for me ) Like finding old frames or heads at the bottom of a freezer that have fallen out of the basket I use in my trunk freezer. Just found some flathead heads. Have people used flathead heads for bait and if so what have they caught with them ? What are flatheads predators ? Any info would be interesting. Cheers
  10. So after questioning if we should go, The decision was made. You won't catch anything sitting at home. Got to rocks at 430pm and set up to catch some squid. Fished just at the bend on the way around to the deeper ledges. Mate was the first into one and quickly dispatched him and kept at it but other than another guys across from us getting 1 really small squid no more came out to play. So I did some spinning with 40 and 60 grams metals with no takers. Fresh squid won out. Landed a poor man's lobster, lots of pesky eels, Palma and a wobbygong that was it for us. Swell stated to pick up. Not the best results but glad we got out.
  11. Nice work guys. Some times you have to just roll with the punches and change as conditions dictate. Always amazes me how many big flattie in Brissy waters there are. You did well with all the holiday traffic on the water.
  12. Thanks guys. Looked quiet calm on the surf camera earlier. Have looked at search history on site was just wondering if anyone on here had been there of late. Might just have to make a plan B and C. Yeah willy weather has predicted 30 km winds this evening. Cheers
  13. Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone has been fishing at Avoca rocks and know what the conditions are like. Was thinking of giving it a go with a mate this arvo. It is his first time there so just want to save him the drive from Sydney if it's no good. Any info would be great. Cheers
  14. Good work guys. Sounds like fun and a plan came together.
  15. Great to get them off the couch and tech gear. Well done on the catch. Great effects on the pic
  16. Thanks everyone. It certainly feels good knowing that I stuck with it and was rewarded. I have never lost gear and now I know the feeling. I have learnt from the experience..... believe me. Finally getting to follow the initial plan at the beach and get some fish and follow that up with the flattie was great. I was just fishing with wife and 18 mth old girl thinking it would be a quiet one and maganged the flathead. Could not believe the treble trick worked 😁 but to say I was pleased is an understatement. And yes even at 430 in the morning a cold beer on ice was stunning. Some times it's worth it to just get out there and have a crack. U never know what is waiting. 🍺
  17. Sounds like you had a great day with stories to last. Good on you with the save. Don't make things how they used too. Good knowledge goes along way.
  18. Hi, been a while between posts. Happy new year to all. 🎉 Bit of a delayed report but hopefully helpful. I decided to try for a fish at putty beach the other night and thought I'd try catch some fresh bait at Ettalong wharf on the way. There are some pesky pike around sometimes. Had two rods out fishing with slivers of salted pilchards and prawn pieces. Pike didn't want to play ball and the tailor were tiny but I kept at it and while I was baiting one rod the rod laying down not 2 feet away zipped along the wharf hit the edge and flipped up and out into the drink. I was gob smacked. Do I go in after it ? No. phone was in my pocket and current to strong. Dam, just had to watch my favourite little setup get pulled into deeper water. After I recovered I had a decision to make. So of course I kept fishing. 😋 Then it hit me I will try and catch my rod. I've read about it before. So I grabbed my spare rod out of car and cast what seemed like forever in the area I had seen it last. So from 130am till 330 I cast and cast and could not retrieve the rod so i packed up and headed for home. I got home defeated was about to grab a beer and console myself and had a brainwave. So I grabbed a short rod, large sinker and treble and headed back to the wharf. Would you believe......second cast I caught my line and very carefully reeled in my favourite set up. Fishing barbless there was no fish on the retrieved rod. Washed the rod, striped down the reel and all is good in my world once again. Did finally managed to get to putty and fishing with salted pillies managed 2 legal tailor 1 undersize and one large shovel nose. Then using the tailor in the channel down from fisherman's Wharf Woy Woy managed a good size flathead which unfortunately would not receive so it came home for a few meals. Thanks for reading. Sorry so long.
  19. Blackfish, Yeah work sucks. I'm lucky enough to have Wednesdays off to spend time with our little girl but having a throat infection the wife wants me out of house so bub doesn't get it. Feel like I'm in quarantine. Thanks for id. That's another for the species board. Don't work to hard Cheers
  20. Morning All, Went to south avoca rocks today to see if crowds have gone. Arrived at first light and there were only 6 or 7 people on the ledge. I fished near the angel ring today instead of the front ledge. Floated pillies for nothing. Then spun for a while using an x-rap long cast shallow for one hook up which resulted in a pulled hook. Then did a bit of light line wash fishing which was the most productive. Caught an eel, leather jacket, some small tailor and I think a baby rock blackfish ? Can anyone advise. Nice morning out. All fish released. Cheers
  21. Well done. Big effort and worth the travel time it seems. Lucky you found licence.....could have made a good day a day to forget. Good luck next time
