Just be careful going ultralight as you might find yourself getting more birdsnests. Going slightly heavier on your jigs heads helps the line wind on to the spool just that little bit tighter.
I usually run 1/8, 1/6 and 1/4 (the last for the extra casting range when I want to cover ground).
I have quite a few 1/8th! I bought heaps

Nevermind! That budget has now pushed up to $88 now we are cooking!
-
I've bought 1/8th 1/12th and 1/16th sizes 1-2#

I'll buy some minnowz and slim swimz most likely, I just need to know what jighead hook sizes I need to match them with

Going to be fishing depths from 1-3m most of the time

Hey Raiders,
Yet another help thread, I've recently gotten into lure fishing! Finally after ages and ages of borrowing my mates lures and rods I bought my own lures and rod and jigheads! I have $38 left to buy some stuff with I am a real noob with hook and lure sizes so I thought i'd come here and ask you guys about your thoughts on what I should get. I was thinking either zman or squidgy in 100mm and 3 inch sizes. My main target species will be flathead as they are my favourite species to target as they are available to anyone and they take basically anything you put in front of them.
Thank you all again.

I just use a knife most of the time but I am really bad at ikijime so I just cut their throats and pull the head back works just as well imo

This is just one method that you can this used to be my go to now I just cast off the reel or get a "pendulum" cast going and flick it out:
-
Practise casting the centrepin and you should get pretty good at it.
I recently was taught how to cast "off the reel" where you get the float swing it to the back and let go of the spool letting the momentum gain and then swing in the direction you want to cast.
Theres different casts you can do such as "the wallis cast" as far as I know there are around three or four ways to cast a centrepin correctly and accurately.
Hope this helps sort of

Good feed as always wish I could get some fish in but nothing much is hitting my lures.....
The eel looks exactly like those "slapstix" big flathead soft plastics :

Definitely getting the salty fighter now its an excellent combo for the money, i've used it before its very nice.
-
Yeah I am going to just go the Salty Fighter and kill all my former orders and then order a daiwa luxel and aquatip and 8lb berkley vanish fluorocarbon as I need to get another bait rod as one of my beloved rods got to meet the car door..... I have $47 left for lures which of I am going to stock up on squidgies and jigheads
-
Thanks for all the replies guys! I know that with cheaper gear it isn't going to last as long but all I need to do is just take a lot of good care with it and she'll be right. The combo is usually $140 so it being at $60 is a big discount and I've heard okuma makes decent stuff for the money. All of this doesn't really matter anymore..... My orders have been cancelled by a shop and a shop so i've basically got all my money back.

Hey raiders,
I was recently shopping around for what I was planning to buy for my birthday and I came across an Abu Garcia Redmax estuary spin 2-4kg spin rod. For me it was perfect because it came pre spooled with 10lb braid, had a box of good little berkley powerbait ripple shad soft plastics with 30 soft plastics and 15 jigheads, I know that Abu Garcia's budget lure rods are good as one of my mates has the Salty Fighter 2-4kg 7ft model, I had budgeted really well and made a good job of keeping the price on my $230 budget.
Instead I am thinking that I should instead either save up another $50 and get an abu garcia salty fighter or go ahead and get this Okuma Zman Z-Series 702ML 30 2-4kg Spin Combo for $59 which is a steal! My only problem is braid is expensive to buy and I specially bought 250yards of 8lb berkley vanish. I could get a little bit more money than $230 say perhaps $280-$300 if I am lucky. Anyways sorry that this is a bit of a very confusing essay on what I should get but I feel it is a good idea to get another opinion on what I should get as I would love to get my first little soft plastics lure rod!
Cheers everyone I look forward to the replies!

It would be the same baits regardless most likely but I guess that that would vary according to the availability of the bait to the jewies because their diet most likely wouldn't change right?
-
Hey raiders,
Yet another thread asking for help, in your opinion what do you guys think is the best winter jew bait? Me and my mate are keen on getting our hands on some yakkas or talior as they are our most accessible and easier option to go and try get some bait for jew. Are there any particular spots we should try like say hopefully somewhere in the Georges as that is our local or cronulla beach, I know that the bigger talior have now moved in so I am going to try and take advantage of that but my other worry is that because of winter that the yakkas will be a lot more lethargic and a lot more mellow and not as aggressive when feeding etc. Thanks for the help looking forward to some replies.
Cheers everyone, JamoDamo

I have ZERO idea in fishing for blackfish but why dont you fish where you collect your bait? Where the food source is the fish will be i rckn
I used local weed collected from a nearby spot near my house with my mate I am considering making a weed farm so I don't have to constantly go on the hunt instead I can just get it from a soda bottle with weed and saltwater in it and later on a full on tub with it growing in it I am planning to grow all different types so I can have a good variety next time.

Hi damo,
If your float pops up or is on its side because you are too close the the bottom, it's because your lead has hit the bottom. If you have a trace of 30cm and raise the depth 30cm you can still get snagged. You might like to raise it a bit further.
In my experience, blackfish usually feed around 4 to maybe 8 feet deep, frequently shallower but rarely much deeper.
Water clarity sometimes sends them down a bit if the water is really super clear and and especially if there is bright sun. But mostly 5 to 6 feet down.
KB
Would this be dependent on the depth of the water you are fishing or just generally 4-8 foot?

Thanks to all who replied I really appreciate the help. I've got an excellent spot that always produces good weed 5 mins from home so i'll use it as bait and burley so they get tuned into what we are using as I believe that was one error we made. SaltyGreek had trouble with the steelite so I am going to the the 455bxl luderick special on the float rod so he can use the sidecast option. we've got to make premade burley and find the depth, i'll set it a rod length and if we aren't on the bottom i'll set it deeper and see if the float is laying over or just off the bottom and then i'll adjust 30cm up and start from there and find them. Thank you all so much for the replies @Koalaboi and everyone. Thanks all!
Cheers, JamoDamo
