  1. Anybody here use the alloy boat rollers on their trailer?

I was under the boat on the weekend and noticed a fair bit of marking to the Keel on the quintrex. It appears where the edge of the keel has contacted the step on the Alloy roller. I put it on last Summer because the plastic one was just getting hammered every time i retieved the boat.

I was thinking of spinning it in a lathe and removing the step on the roller and making it blend better. As except for the marks it has been an improvement otherwise.

    Anybody had similar problems?

  2. The brand of the boat is not important .

Sorry mate disagree a bit. There is a difference between a Stacer and allycraft and the way they are constructed that makes the Stacer more desriable.

The after market trim and tilt was CMC or CNC by memory handled by a house boat company in Australia, approx $1,000 if i remember correctly.

  3. Whilst i had the bait tank out last year I started to install a second bilge pump with a separate float switch. I did not finish wiring as i mainly wanted to get the gear in while the tank was out of the way as it makes access to the centre bilge near impossible on the boat. And i could do the wiring quickly if i was going offshore or to moor it (which i did neither)

I started to wire it this morning and i noticed the ball in the float switch was sticking and not always switching on or off. I imagine banging around on the water it would loosen up a bit but i don't want to take the chance. It was a cheap brand of switch (not Rule or Johnson) and i probably got what i paid for and will not make same mistake again.

So what do raiders find best in float switches separate or integrated? I noticed even when 1st installed that you had to be careful with wires and hose getting in the way of the float switch.

    my setup will be a

1500GPH Rule 1"1/8' outlet manual switched pump and then a automatic switched pump of around 7-900 GPH

  4. my first boat was insured with Nrma for 2 mths before being written off. Only beef i had was being new i didnt have correct values on the Hull (too much on motor) and they were only going to take the hull. leaving me with a trailer and motor to sell! After a very friendly chat with the assessor he agreed to sell me the hull back and i flogged the remains on blah blah poop and breaking even.

2nd boat i took the Yamaha marine insurance (Yamaha users only) 30% cheaper than anybody else for the last two years with some really good included benefits. It was managed by Nautilass underwritten with Hollard and i had a bit of problems with getting an agreed value through. This year the renewal has just come through and it has gone up considerably now underwritten by Westfarmers!

I will be shopping around this month for the best deal but may go back with NRMA, just don't want the hassle of separate BMT values

  5. Nothing yet, I still haven't got it , no one had commented I just thought it was a common plotter/sounder.

Probably because most on here seem to have the Hummingbird, Lowrance or Furuno. Do a search, the threads/users i have read give the Garmin a good wrap. Let us know what you think when it is here.

  6. Going to be staying in a house on the water up at Forster for a week and was wondering if there is anything obvious i should be doing whilst the boat is moored?

Do i leave the leg down or up?

Should i still flush the motor (maybe no water on the jetty)

Is there a particular way i should be tying the mooring lines?

Any suggestions are welcome as i have never left a boat unattended at a jetty before

    Thanks

  7. The weather looks good for Friday so I aim to leave Roseville ramp about 6am or Pennant Hills about 5.30am.

I have a 5.2m plate boat, GPS, radio, etc and all safety gear. I have 1 down rigger, and am are very experianced fisherman.

The plan is to see how the squid are, catch some live bait, troll the headlands for tailor or bonito and if the is calm enough go out to DY wide to catch some flathead, mowies, or reds drifting in 50m.

While I have enough gear for a guest if you have gear something to troll bib lures, throw for squid, and bottom bash with 1/2lb lead with about 30lb line is the gear required.

I would welcome an experianced fisherman that does not get seasick or takes medication, no assistance with the boat etc is required. We can work out the bait but I have pillies and some prawn bait and burley and usually pick up live bait and sometimes squid, or tailor or bonito on the way out.

Email me at aljohn@tpg.com.au or on this site.

    Any previous guests are welcome.

I aim to be back at the ramp about 12noon +-1/2 hour.

    Saltrix

Far out Saltrix, i have watched your reports and requests for a partner (mostly on Mondays) for ages and think how i would love to go fishing with you, finally a Friday comes up and i have it off............. and my boys is playing rep soccer for the school :1badmood:

    Good luck with the day.

  8. Hey i just purchased a x510c lowrance sounder and im looking for a transducer for it, as it didnt come with a transducer, i seem to be having trouble finding a suitable transducer

any help would be great cheers Checch

To my knowledge all Lowrance sounders come with a transducer so it would be a spare part i think

  9. sounders are awesome tools when used correctly

i want to open up a thread dedicated to sounders and there readings

that way ppl can take photos of there sounder readings and explain whats going on the screen so ppl who dont understand sounders can get a better idea of whats going on

what ya reckon good idea or not ??

what section would one put a thread like that ??

Mate why not start with the Sounder Reviews thread in boating? Pinned here http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=19566

  10. Can do it on soft tube with a forming spring over the outside packed with sand as well.. It is tough on the hands with copper and was really hard work 20 years ago on ally.

Most exhaust shops won't carry dies small enough

Yep sand will do it, pack it tight and if you are going to use heat make sure the sand is as dry as or your bungs will fire out like a shotgun. You can buy a cheap Chinese made tube bending kit that have round dies to 7/8 and square to 1" for about $150-$180 these look ok for the money but i guess that is sort going to blow your budget a bit (and doesn't do 1" round, although you could use the square die). Go and have a look at the principal of how they work by pulling the tube around the die and then make something with plywood and MDF.

This a bit hard to explain but the concept is dead easy

cut out your required bend radius from 1" MDF and fastened to a ply backing board. Then secure the tube to one side of the makeshift die (we call a "buck") fasten another piece of ply over the top. By now the tube should be secure and can not easily expand sideways (hence cant flatten). Then gently start to pull the tube around the buck. Everything needs to be solid and you can use sand as well.

As mentioned above your sand needs to be dry, it is best dried on trays in an oven, but it stinks to high heaven so find another method to dry it. Even if you are not going to heat the tube the sand still packs better if it is baked dry.

    Good Luck

  11. Hey Guys

What you guy think of these boats, Im looking at buying a new boat and these seem alot more affordable...

Will I be buying myself into Troubles ??

    *EDITED BY MOD*

Tell me what you all think about them the set up I want is almost $2500 cheaper then the same sort in Quntrex

    HELP ME OUT GUYS !!!

All good points above, keep in mind the Chinese boats will have a much lower resale value as well, I know a couple grand seems a big difference but it will get forgotten after a while.

  12. Hi Jim, you can not compare a 50HP E-TEC to a carby 50HP Johno, they are totally different and just what 4-Stroke guys do, they only compare their new engine to an old tech engine in any of their marketting. At least BRP are comparing modern clean engine vs modern clean engine. When I see a comparison of a 4-Stroke they say it uses less fuel, is cleaner and quieter/smoother than a carby engine and as I said earlier it is like one car company comparing their modern car with a 20 year old car-no point and waste of time. You would want to hope that a modern "clean" 4-Stroke is better than a carby 2-Stroke.

I ran a 40HP E-TEC yesterday that we have traded on a 16 foot fibreglass boat that would weigh a fair bit more the Tuffys alloy boat and it did 26 knots on the GPS and cruise comfortably at 4500 doing 19Knt. It started first turn of key, ideling smoothly and quietly and had heaps of grunt to plane the deep vee glass boat well.

Good point and as I have offered Tuffy, before you pay your hard earned cash, go for a run with an I-2 E-TEC and see for yourself and be fair and add SST prop and service costs to any brand of 4-Stroke. Then if HE still prefers a 4-Stroke that is his right and i wish him all the best.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Hi Craig I am not referring to the noise, emmissions or fuel consumption. I am sure that would all be great as per other etecs, just the mechanics of a large capacity two cylinder inline motor firing at 180 degrees. Could not see that being as smooth as the 3 or 4 cylinder motor.

But i reckon he needs to try it for himself, i just wish mine would take the 115, last ear looking at the Bluefin 525's a dealer in QLD had one with a Etec V4115 thing flew did 75km and jumped out the hole like a rocket.

  13. I was totally pissed with the final minutes of the Dogs/dragons game, being a rabid dogs fan i tried to justify the dickheads decision but cant. If Clark had any balls he would have overruled the vid ref after watching the video like the rest of us.

Totally piss poor by the league, i can handle the of field dramas that unfold because at the end of the day they are young fellars with too much money and time and sadly just represent what happens elsewhere in the community, and i think as long as they are dealt with by the law so be it.

But Gallop and co hold themselves as the god almighty of all things League and cant get decision that effect the outcome of seasons right, screw em I have promised myself i will watch no more league this year they can go and get ........

    Rant over

  14. Tuffy you should look at all your options, the Yams a great especially the 50/4's. But the etec's are impressive as well, the only thing i would say is try a 50 etec out. I would have no hesitation putting a 75/90 etec on my boat especially with Huey as the dealer or there 115 it is a magnificent motor imo. But personally would need to be convinced of the 50/60. The old johno 50 did not impress me, being a 800cc twin cylinder, never seemed smooth to me, they would speed up idle and do all sort of things to help but in the end 800+cc is big for two cylinders especially in pararel form and compared with your Honda may seem harsh.

  15. went crabbing yesterday on the water at dawn with main aim of crabbing set a run of 8 hats (5 per person 2 on board) tried some hats with mullet some with slimies some with chicken checked them each 30 -45 minutes some had 0 some had 3 in them with no real prefference for bait.

spent all day out had a moment with a very strong nipper pinning me on the palm (on the meaty bit!)gee it hurt whilst holding the other nipper trying to get it off.they are very powerful wouldn't want one on a finger! during this another one untangled itself and was doing it's best to get my toes on the floor of the boat. my wife could only see the funny side! any way we come home with 37 keepers all but one female

some reel crackers aswell having trouble with pics try later

Mate thats a great result with crabs, i would have thought they would be shy this late in the year. When you say Wollongong to you mean the lake or outside?

  16. Cut the fillets thin (5 to 6mm), melt enough butter (don't burn it), add some cracked pepper, a little salt - you can add ginger and or garlic to suit your taste - cook them for 30 seconds, add fillets, then fry the fillets for 1 minute. Turn and cook for 30 seconds more. Squeeze some fresh lemon, a little garnish and enjoy.

My choice for the fillets is definately Mahi Mahi.

A nice fruity wine will be a great combination.

    Cheers

    Mariner

Mate that gets the gong for the most "mouth watering reply" i have ever read. All i need to do is catch the Mahi

  17. Gotta watch using the traps nowadays as some councils have banned them (Blue Mountains Council for one) They have found instances of small platypus getting caught and drowning in unattended traps.

  18. That was my guess - I've been going there for many years and I reckon that's the inlet in the background.

Since Riley's been a tad light on providing any details of his captures I'll note that there is a very productive shallow-water Snapper reef a couple of hundred meters south of the Sussex Inlet bar (not an easy bar to cross BTW in any sort of swell). We anchored there by accident one arvo and pulled four legal snapper on squid while waiting for the 'captain' to fix the motor.

Unfortunately those are the best directions I can give as it was about 5 years ago and I never took a reading.

Looking on Google earth thats a pretty unfriendly looking bar!
