  1. Here is a screen shot from the video of the water coming out near the anode

I dropped the lower leg today, everything looks okay, I decided to use a bead of RTV gasket silicon all around the exhaust chamber.

Seems to be a logical thing to do - are there any issues with doing this?

I also took the prop off today and no sign of fishing line behind the prop, going to take it in to have the gear casing looked at.

I also noticed why the engine buzzer (the one that sounds as you turn the key and if something is wrong) is not working, it has been deliberately disconnected. I am guessing the oil level sensor went and the previous owner didnt want to replace it so chose to disconnect the entire system.

Overall I am glad I did the work on the motor, I have learnt a lot and feel like if something went wrong while out on the water I would have an idea of where to start looking.

Thanks for all the feedback so far, keep it coming.

  2. Another thing I noticed was a crack in the motor housing around the gear selector, it is in a very hard to notice place, I only noticed it when I was putting the lower leg back in.

Judging by the corrosion around the crack I would guess it has been this way for a while.

If any raiders can please offer some insight on this.

Can't clean carbs by spraying them, looks like water in the gear oil, might be time for a quick pressure test, did you replace the washers under the drain/fill plugs, have you removed the prop to check for fishing line around the seal? not too sure where you mean the water is coming out, can you take a picture?

Will try and post the video again

  4. Hi Raiders,

I had a go at servicing my 2001 90 HP Mercury 2 Stroke today.

    I did the following:

    • Gear oil (see picture of old oil, please advise if there is anything I should be concerned about with the colour of the oil is this what would be considered milky?)
    • Spark plugs
    • Impeller
    • Inline fuel filter
    • Fuel water separator filter
    • Carb clean (used the Yamalube aerosol)

I noticed that when running the motor there is water coming out around the anodes, is this normal or am I missing a gasket (there wasn't one when I took the lower leg off)

The carb cleaner seems to have caused some issues, the motor now misses when you rev it one of the carbs (the top one) back fires- I have run the motor for at least 30 minutes so I expect that the carb cleaner has been burnt off.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have a video of the motor running but cant upload it

I owned and ran a Merc 200HP EFI 2St from 1999 until 1month ago. I always used Quicksilver Premium 2St Oil TCW3 except when I could not get my hands on it (none in stock or I was travelling) - on those occasions I tried Penrite and Valvoline and found both of these to be much more smokier on start than Quicksilver. My motor went to a new home after 21yrs with perfect compression, no bearing issues etc.

Quicksilver is a very shrewd marketing/branding strategy executed by Mercury.

Mercury branded products can ONLY be sold by Mercury dealers.

Quicksilver products can be sold by non-Mercury dealers, retail outlets - a shop, RTM etc etc etc

Quicksilver distributes Mercury OEM (produced) products. So for instance a Yam owner may consider Quicksilver oil, just like they would consider Valvoline ... but they may not consider Mercury oil with the same level of interest as it seems to be labeled very brand specific.

Interesting fact, in the english language the element mercury (chemical symbol Hg) is also known as "quicksilver" ... so there you have it, quicksilver is just mercury by another name .... very very shrewd marketing !!!!

    Cheers Zoran

Quicksilver oil price is the same as is the bottle shape. Looks like I will make the switch to Quicksilver oil. Available at a shop so no issue with availability.

  6. Hi Raiders,

I am looking for some advice from those who have been boating for a while.

I have a 2001 90HP Mercury Saltwater 2 stroke, I am currently using the Valvoline product (no reason other than it is a brand I know and it is mid range in terms of price)

Are there any other oils that you can recommend? The advice I have been given is that with my motor being an older model as long as it is TC-W3 rated it is fine, is that correct?

  7. Hi Raiders,

I recently bought a 2nd hand boat. It has a 2001 90 HP ,2 stroke, Saltwater Mercury on it.

The hours on the gauge are 340.

I took it for a compression test and the mechanic said all the cylinders read 130psi, he didnt say anything about the plugs when he took them out.

The motor runs fine, starts easily and pumps lots of water.

I was thinking of taking it for a service just to be 100% sure everything is good, but I was quoted over $700 for parts and labor.

The challenge I have is that I blew the budget on the boat, and the trailer turned out to be a dud so I need a new trailer which I was not planning on. Is there anything that I must just bite the bullet and change on the motor? I dont want to be penny wise and pound foolish and land up having to spend 1000's later.

If you can also advise how hard is it to service an outboard at home?

    Thanks

  8. I also need a new trailer, I recently bought a 2nd hand boat, the trailer looked alright until I took it in to get the brakes done and was told that it has at best 1 year left. I blew the budget on the boat so I am strapped any tips or recommendation on who in Sydney (I am in the Shire too but will travel for a good deal) can help me out with a reasonable trailer that will last at least another 5-7 years.

    Thanks in advance

Good points above, its does pay in most situations to have a back up.

    I know when I go bush I have 2 or 3 uhf's, 2 GPS's plus paper maps etc.

What are the issues your having with the 27mhz?

Could be bad aereal connection if your getting static?

It just seems to not pick anything up I leave it on scan and it runs for ages then all of a sudden its onto something for a couple of seconds then gone.

  10. Being new to boating and new to taking a boat outside the river systems I am looking to get some guidance from experienced boaters on what weather conditions are considered too bad to go out to aviod learning the hard way.

I will be going out via the Port Hacking and will be looking to fish around the Jibbon Bommie, down to Stanwell etc.

    I have a 5.5m Stessl Blue Water powered by a 90hp.

What swell size is considered a no go, and does swell direction and frequency play a role.

Are there specific wind directions to look out for, I currently try to avoid winds above 20kmh.

    Thanks in advance.

  11. Hi Raiders,

I have recently bought a 2nd hand boat and it came with both a 27mhz and VHF radio. Is there a reason to have both or can I just run the VHF and same some dash space. The 27mhz doesn't seem to be working properly so it will need some TLC.

    Cheers

  12. All great input thanks everyone, as someone who has recently got my boating license and is trying to follow all the safety rules my opinion is that the boat license needs to be revisited so that it covers things like:

    • Radio usage
    • Bar crossings etc.

Being new to the country and new to boating makes it difficult to figure these things out on your own, in an ideal world I would have an experienced boater to show me the ropes and learn like that, at the moment I am watching as much you tube as possible and going step by step out on the water never taking on more than I feel comfortable with and always putting safety first.

According to the regulations you must hold a radio licence before you can legally use a marine radio. Also you must have a marine radio fitted in your boat before going outside. Here is the quandary... If you must have a radio but cannot legally use it if unlicenced you are breaking the law if you fish outside. Seeing the majority of boat users are not licenced what are the authorities able to do? Marine Rescue pleads with boaties to log on for their own safety. Many do not, and here is where our problems start. If a boat gets into trouble and we don't know it is out or where it is where do we start looking? There are a number of great action photos on here of you fishing outside WITHOUT wearing life jackets. Please please wear them. They are your first line of protection. We do not like looking for bodies

JimC totally agree and this is why I am trying to ensure I comply. I have bought an Eprib got flares that are in date, v sheet and I always wear my PFD. The issue with the radio license is that it is not as clear as the other things and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of online courses.

  14. Thanks all for the replies.

In the end I bought a 2001 5.5m Stessl Blue Water with a mint 90hp Mercury Saltwater, the boat had good reviews when it was tested by a few of the boating and fishing magazines.

Boat is big and solidly built.

Looking forward to getting her on the water this coming weekend.

  15. I am wanting to do the necessary course and get certified to operate a VHF radio. The links in the first post to the online training course dont work.

Is there still an online learning option, happy to go somewhere and write the test but would like to do the study work online.

  16. Still on the hunt for a new boat. Have come across a Sportsman Craft.

No model given but it is a 1998 5.5mt

Any Raiders able to give some guidance on this boat are they any good or should I stay away?

    Cheers
