    G’day raiders,

This post is a little inspiration for those wanting to head up to Port Stephens for a meet and greet.
Headed out with a mate this morning to some sloppy and blowy conditions. It’s been a real struggle of late and you pretty much need to get your fish at first light or there gone.
Didn’t stop for bait and pulled up to our first mark and did two drifts without a touch. Moved around the corner and I finally come up tight to a nice 50. A few more casts for nothing so we move again to a more promising spot. My mate was technically ok with plastics but a little tweaking and soon he gets hammered a line peels off. A good fight and into the net goes a just on 70 model. Yesssssssss!

I “just kept casting” and soon had another 55 to the box as my mate played with some rat kings.
Move again and this time it was my turn for the rats. Had enough there so we hit the next mark which was devoid of bait and any sign of good fish.
Then we move to an area I’ve fished many times for decent pannies and I cast out, whack!!!! This thing is pulling line and screaming just under the surface, oh finally a decent king I think. Then I managed to stop its progress and then I can feel the signs of a huge snapper. The heart started to beat a little faster but I could feel I had a solid hook up. I started winning some line and then it started to get some back which went on for quite some time until I finally see colour. With sore arms and the knees now knocking, my mate reaches out with the net and boom! Another cracking 95cm of Broughton Island caught snapper!
After a few high 5’s, giggles and wow moments, we composed ourselves and started casting again. A few more were added to the box but then we called it a day just before midday!
Another cracking day in Port Stephens!!!

    Time: 9:40

    Tide: two hours after low

Gear: shimano ultegra 5000 with 20lb fins braid and 20lb black magic fluro leader, 1/4 5/0 tt jig and a 7 inch gulp garlicker.

    Location: Broughton Island

    cheers scratchie!!!

So after sitting around twiddling my thumbs for the last couple of months I was hanging to get out of the city and catch some mighty Sergeant Baker. I am after all the self crowned Greatest Sergeant Baker Fisherman in Sydney. Thursday I jumped into the 4x4 and charged up to Yamba. I had booked a seat on Charter X as it wasn't worth towing the boat up for just a day really; Friday I had to work out of the hotel I was staying at and was coming back Sunday.

Wandering around after work on Friday and noticed that no one was fishing one of the better blackfish spots there. If your ever up there this spot can go off big time but the fish often want black weed. When they are like that the generally won't take anything else.1661948223_YambaWall.thumb.jpg.ac4dc2493557df7eb6251e38984342fd.jpg

We headed out at six and went south towards Brooms Head to the first spot and baits down. Felt a few bites then I'm on; it was the right colour but wrong species. A pannie snapper. Back down and shortly later I'm on again; tusk fish.

I got to say at this stage I was getting worried as neither I, nor anyone else, had caught a sergeant baker. This just wasn't going to plan at all. I had caught some micro red rock cod but that's not what I was after. Finally someone did catch one and the deckie cut it up for bait!! What a sad way to treat a prized game fish like that. At one stage a floater that was out went off and I was hopeful that it would be a giant one, but it was only a 73cm snapper.

We fished on after that for more snapper, tuskies and a few trag. I briefly tried slow jigging but I kept tangling up with others so stopped pretty quickly. By the time we had to head in there was not a bad collection of fish in the box and everyone was pretty happy. FYI there were more fish in the box include a metre whaler shark that was kept for the table.

I myself was pretty happy and had enough fish for a couple of feeds which is fine for me. How can you not be happy floating around on a nice day, see a few whales and get some salt spray on the face. It was nice just getting out and about and a fish or two was a bonus.

The charter was very good and they knew where to go. It wasn't the best moon phase for reef fish but we did OK. If anyone would like details on the charter PM me and I'll pass their info on. Once we got back they started prepping for an evening charter; they run these during the winter as there is no wind. I saw the results on their Facebook page..yeah they did ok

I think I need to go on one of these charters and see if I can stop being the worst jewie fisherman in Sydney!

    Cheers

    Rob

    Champion effort!

Sounds like we are cut from the same cloth. I regularly tell my fans if I choose the location and method you're going to catch eff-all fish. Take me on a charter with a great skipper and I'll catch fish for dayz. Go figure?? 🤔

Got up at 5:45 am this morning and humped it over to Putty Beach to chase some Tailor and Salmon.  So good to get out for a fish after a week of terrible weather.  The swell was still pretty high and the waves were 2ish metre still.  The Northern end near the rocks looked a little calmer so I headed down that way.  Other than it being a bit rough it was a beautiful morning.

I was fishing my surf spin rig which is a Shimano Classix Surf Spin 10' 6" with a Sedona 5000.  I was running 20 pound braid, 30 pound leader, running sinker and ganged hooks.  Pilchards were the fish snack served!

I'm pretty new to surf fishing so my ability to read the beach is still pretty novice.  I eventually found a nice hole (once it got light enough to see) and settled in for a 4 hour fish.

Caught four, got busted off once and dropped 2 within eyesight.  I'm finding I have a disturbing habit of getting the fish visible then they pull a Houdini act.

Todays catches were 2 Aussie Salmon, 1 Bream and a Dart.

The bream was lunch...oven baked in lime, sweet chilli and ketjap manis wrapped in foil.  It was great!

    Cheers

Having taken a young lad out over the weekend new to fishing who I took through the basics, flathead, bonito's and a bit of reef fishing. This had made my daughter reminisce the old days before she became so hardcore on the offshore scene, so both herself and my young lad headed out for a fun session on small fish.

Soon found a patch of very hungry salmon at the back of the surf which resulted in hookup after hookup which I struggled to keep up with releasing!!!

From there on we tried a few spots for squid but no luck there, possibly due to the water temp drop to 17'c inshore. We always seem to find a few dolphins along the shore line which are fun to watch for a while.

Headed out to 60m water where the snapper used to be a few years ago before the jackets took over the local reefs. I dropped a micro jig, my son a baited rig and my daughter a soft plastic. The sneaky girl hooked a nice little snapper first drop, which had us all pretty excited as we haven't had much luck on them for the last 5 years. Unfortunately that was the only snapper before the jackets took everything we dropped. We moved and moved for two hours to only to find jackets ready to snip us off on our first drop. The funny thing (or not so funny really) is that these reefs no longer show signs of the marine growth on them they used to have. I wonder if the jackets have had such an effect on other species that the reefs have changed in themselves.

I don't think I will waste fuel heading up that way for snapper again this year.

Since you're not far from those locations, you should take notes and compile all the information together. Such as tides, swell, wind, moon, water clarity & speed, catches & small info such as those and then after you gather enough info you might be able see a pattern.

This would be the best tool as it is localised to certain systems at certain locations, rather than just a general chart for all.

Wise words R81.  I'll give that a try.  I'm a tech geek so I'm looking forward to cracking the code.

Generally these say peak times will be moon rise, moon set, moon straight above or directly below with the "excellent" fishing being the 3-4 days either side of full or new moon. This info can be sourced from a lot of places pretty easy these days.

It's best to fish whenever you can not plan trips around these things as so many other things influence fish behaviour.

I have had some amazing fishing around the predicted times but plenty in the so called quiet times so fish when you have the time.

I'm 5 mins from the Ettalong, Umina Beach and Booker Bay and never need any excuse to go wet a line...just ask my wife

  7. Ok rookie question time.  What do fellow Fishraider members think of services like https://www.fishingreminder.com for predicting good fishing dates and bite times?

FishingReminder.com uses the Solunar Theory to predict bite times/hot fishing days.  More info on this here...

    Quote

Fishingreminder is here to help you decide when to go fishing. Fish have feeding times just like us, we call them bite times. But their feeding times follow a natural rythm of sun and moon. Because sun and moon will change during the years, months and days the bite times for each day will vary.
For that reason a specific theory was developed to describe and predict bite times. It's called the Solunar Theory. Fishingreminder uses this theory to calculate a fishing calendar based on sun and moon movements, tides and weather. We have even included knowledge from the ancient Maori fishing calendar in our calculations.
According to the Solunar Theory all wildlife and not only fish follow a similar feeding rhythm. Fishingreminder can therefore also be used for hunting and bird watching to find times of increased feeding activity.
Sometimes we are very busy with work and other commitments and don’t have time or forget to check for good fishing days regularly. Only to realize a week or so after new moon that we have just missed what could have been an epic fishing session.

Based on FishingReminder.com 22/5 to 28/5 is going to be some good Fishing!  My FishingReminder.com account is set to Ettalong Beach...aka my good.

What do we all think?  A good site or BS?

    Asking for a friend

  8. Headed to Putty Beach at 5am this morning. Why is it whenever I plan an early morning session I wake up an hour before my alarm? 🤦‍♂️. After staring at my alarm for 15mins then said f&$k it and got up.

My outfit was a surf spin with 20 pound braid and mono with a running sinker 30 pound leader and 3.0 suicide. I've been bitten off by big Tailor a few times recently so I went probably a bit larger than necessary.

I quickly hooked up to a junior Tailor early and turned her into slab bates. Chucked in my line and was nailed quite quickly by a 64 cm Aussie Salmon. It was towing me up and down the beach and peeled off some line which was awesome.  Dropped the fish as I pulled it up out of the surf. Bolted in and managed to scoop/throw it over my shoulder to save the day. Ah yeah!

Caught another 50cm Salmon which fought as hard as the bigger brother. I was convinced it was a PB and was a little let down when I saw its actual size. It was a little foul hooked so guess that's what made it feel bigger.

Caught some legal sized Bream as well to round off a fun morning at Putty Beach.

    Great fun overall.
