Well done Greg and what a buzz getting to join the famous Stewy on a fishing trip. I felt pretty bad that you missed out on catching a Kingfish when we went out with Pickles. Now I feel elated that you caught so many and that big girl Flathead is something you'll remember for ever. Well done guys on a VERY successful days fishing.

    Cheers, Neil

    Thanks BN,

Don't feel bad, all good things come to those who wait and i still got plenty of time to keep fishing!

  2. Congrats on the new PB!,

Looks like you finally dried up in the end and had a great day out!

Well done for releasing her back home, as I just recently experienced this feeling last week releasing an 80cm model.

I could not imagine the guilt or resentment if I dispatched it, instead I still recall clearly that massive head just swimming away from the boat.

  3. Right or wrong, i just fillet the slimes, salt heavily on both sides and add two filets in a zip lock bag and freeze.

I am just looking for a bit of firmness and toughening up without losing too much of its body etc.

On the old occasion sometimes do this with frozen pillies, slight thaw and add salt and refreeze.

I too mainly use them for flat head drifting, however saying that never bag out!

Hopefully the bigguns will be there next time 🤞

Thanks and yes most fun, workout and action I had fishing this year.

Even got to christen the reel as well with a healthy batch of fish and couldn’t ask for more!

Hopefully I will be there when they mature a little bit more.

Nice report! I thought that poly was @swordfisherman

I was on the Hobie next to you guys but couldn't manage a hit on my live squid.. I was surprised the squid was still alive after 45 minutes, perhaps it was too big for the little rats

I thought you guys were on lures so I put on a vibe and hooked up instantly.

    Will say hi next time

    It was!

I was the passenger and yes I also saw you next us trawling around for bites and action!

They were small and glad you finally got some action!

Nothing wrong with saying Hi, Hopefully catch up next time n the water.

    Great report & effort GGG.

Pretty hard now to better a day like that!

I almost broke my SP PB in the bay when I tried to solo net a near 1 metre croc back in Feb this year & only 1/3rd of it would fit into the environet & was so heavy it fell out & subsequently spat the hook 😢

I still remember it like it was yesterday, the water was murky after several days of storms & it hit my 3 inch gulp minnow in pilchard colour.

The things you remember even after this time  😏

Wish I had a gopro, at least the story could be quantified

I know its still out there & Im still trying to hunt it down & am now calling it "whiskettes" 😂 @Scratchie

Thanks for the detailed report, I'll be out there next week if the weather is ok trying for some blue swimmers & looking for "whiskettes"

Thanks and good luck with the Croc/Whiskettes, we now know there are at least 2 good fish and possibly more out there roaming around.

I wish we had filmed the release as that is something I will remember forever but would have loved to share with others. What a moment to see a fish f that size look back at you with its massive head & eyes and then slowly swim leisurely away back to fight another day.

Giddy up fellas! A few lessons off the master aye. I can’t believe he wasn’t rigged up properly already for squid?? Sure it’s the same Stewy??? Lol 😝

Good to see him behind the camera for a change! Well done 👍

    cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks to al the positive comments from al raiders.

    Scratchie,

just to be clear and a correction, his squid rig was ready to go as you would expect from him any possibly any other fishraider.

I meant to say his boat/polycraft/rig position, and a few adjustments with the minkota all good, sorry about that!

  9. It went something like this....

Got the call from Stewart, Fish Raider Legend yesterday on short notice for a possible trip to the Great Botany Bay for some kings!

I wasn’t going to miss this opportunity on the Blue Poly.

That evening I prepare my Shimano SSS, Sonic Pro, 2-4kg stick, with 12lb FC leader and tie a nice Yamashita 2.5 pink jig for the task at hand.

Second job was to prepare a rig for some Kingy action!

I had a brand new Shimano Saragossa in a box already braided with 60lb ready to go that has never been used. I rig this machine to my other SSS Sonic Pro snapper, 6-8kg rod.

The Gossa has been left behind until I knew I was up for a serious day’s fishing along with some more experience. I tie a nice FG knot to 60LB FC with a single Mustard 6/0 Hoodlum Hook.

The plan was to meet at Kyeemagh Boat ramp at 4:15am for an early start, so that we could be at Captains Cook landing early for some fresh squid.

We meet up at the ramp and launch the poly into very light 13Km Westerly wind with great conditions forecasted.

On arrival to the squid grounds, Stew was not impressed with his rig and made some minor adjustments, then we were ready for squidding.

Between both of us we bagged a dozen at least in about 1.5hrs and moved onto Molineaux Point for the kings.

There were three other boats already there and soon after Stew shows me how to land a king.

The bait & conditions were perfect and soon we were on fire with rat kings 55-60cm chewing up our baits, boated and then all released.

I stopped counting once I reached a dozen.

A real first for me as I only ever caught 2 rat kings prior to this outing and on separate occasions.

Bait was running low, so we conserved and stripped them and recycled whether possible. I managed to hook up 8 times on a single 2-inch squid strip.

Between the both of us we managed to catch about 40 or so kings and left them biting.

No legal king yet but it will have to wait for another day!

Our next adventure would be to try our luck at flat head, as I am told Donna loves flathead!

We move onto Towra with soft plastics and stew hooks up to 3 flatties in a row, whilst I am yet to feel a bite.

I soon realise that Stew is using a motor oil grub whilst I am using a dissimilar prawn like plastic. I then demand it to be changed over and he then instantly shows me how to bait it in detail to the ¼ ounce jig head.

Still very, very quiet for me despite 20 -30 casts later at different directions, big difference to the rat onslaught.

Losing some interest, I soon start rambling about work and then Bang!

I finally hook up and assume it is only another 50cm model on my small SSS Sonic.

As I am reeling it to the side of the boat, not much of a “fight”, The beast awakens and decides to run and take line of my Sti-Star Hypo drive HV-20 Spool.

Without seeing the fish yet, Stew realises it’s a better model and decides to stop fishing and get on netting duties.

A great fight that lasted about 5mins at least before it tiered out, netted and boated.

The beast revealed itself as an 80cm model Dusky Lizard! Boy was I excited to land this as it would now be my new Official PB, a 30cm increase.

“Ready for the KICKER Stew”, It was my first ever fish caught on Soft Plastic, he couldn’t believe it.

My entire fishing career has been with baits until today.

A few quick pictures and soon the lizard was released to go back home and fight another day.

Not the fish I was expecting but definitely a fish of a lifetime and an experience to remember forever!

Thanks again for the day Stew,

& Special thanks to both Stuart & Donna for their passionate work on Fish Raider.

  10. Congratulations again Big Neil,

It was a pleasure to meet, fish along side you and witness your elusive Legal King. Although it was a very early start and somewhat short of an outing the objective was executed well.

A special thanks to Pickles also for allowing me to board and enjoy the day and gained some great knowledge from the master of King himself.

No Hook up for me, so my goal and objective still stands. That is also to catch a legal king in the distance future. If not this year, there’s plenty of time to fish next year or the year after that.

    Thanks again Lads!

  11. My calculated guess is that I think its some kind of gauge or template for Timber Boat Building.

Defined angles can be transferred using a sliding bevel and transferred on to timber pieces and therefor cut accordingly.

    Or

used as a gauge just like a square to place in timber joints/members before fixing into position.

Coming from wood working background, I don't think its a chisel or cutter as there would be a handle of some sort and a shiny bright edge on the assumed sharp cutting edge.

    I could be wrong though!

Good luck and will follow with interest.

  12. Hi Raiders,

A good little app to save on your smart phone. It has just ben updated for those that may have it already.

It give's you your location on land with latitude and longitude co ordinates if you don't know where you are in an emergency.

Great for remote & local rock fishing and bushwalking trips.

Not sure how far at sea this would work though as I have only tested it 1 to 2km offshore.

    Cheers!

  13. After Spike, bleeding, ice, cleaning etc, If you can best to rinse fish fillets with seawater!

Not easy and always possible, but if land based and depending where you are much easier as you can access the shore or water.

Quality and taste will speak for itself!

I have started to keep my clean bait tank water and drain it into a bucket once home for final rinse of fillets.

    Worth the extra effort.

  14. My view is licensed or unlicensed, if in trouble out at sea, most skippers/boaters would attempt to use the radio to call for assistance. I know I will if the time permitted as every scenario for assistance would be different.

However that said there may also be boaters and crews out there from non English speaking backgrounds, who may never attempt to make a call to marine rescue.

Hopefully with a backup plan in place.

For those who are looking at getting their licence I found these free radio operators handbooks online to study.

I have seen these for sale online for $70.

The only thing is these are not downloadable but is a great iewing version for PC

Could be slightly different to the online versions above!!

    Enjoy & good luck.

Very good reading material, especially for peeps who haven’t or never used their marine radio.

They accept radio calls regardless if you have a licence.    Be aware if you call on the radio for the first time they will most likely ask you boat details.   So it pays to have your rego number written down so you don't have to hang over the side trying to read it upside down.

I'd say for starters it's easier to phone them and have a quick chat or log in using the marine rescue app.   That way most of the questions will be covered.  It's easiest to have a boat name too.

Find out your local marine rescue. When on the water get onto channel 16.   Listen to other calls.  When you want to call, check it's clear and push the button saying marine rescue XYZ ( Solander Sydney or whatever) , marine rescue XYZ , marine Rescue XYZ followed by this is "boat name" requesting a radio check over.   They will reply and probably move you up to a working channel.

Exactly right from my recent radio check experience, they will also request other info such as trailer, car rego and address etc, etc, so be prepared for the questioning as it can take up some valuable fishing time once you are on the water.

Happy to get out with you, my only issue is I need someone to tow my boat (I have a licence and drive, but due to a few little life adventures I have narcolepsy and can fall asleep - not good for my passengers)

    Hi B__,

We attempted on Wednesday and forgot the key!

We arrived all prepped up on Friday, braved the weather and unfortunately returned without a bite. Perhaps my luck must continue.

All good though, till next time.
