Do a compression check on the motor. From memory it should be 120 to 130.
Also just to confuse you I use Nulon oil, just found it a better oil also always use 98 Octane fuel.
Have you got a water seperator on your fuel tank ?
Cheers.
I have a water separate on now. We did a compression test and 2 we're 125 one was 126 and one was 124.

@motiondave @XD351 HI guys I ordered the Gulf Western 2 stroke oil from Autobarn and I received my delivery today but they sent me Valvoline Marine 2 stroke, anyone had any experience with this or do you think it would still be ok. I wanted to check before I called them up. Thanks, guys

Thank you guys I will definitely be going through this step by step, I'll try and put some photos up of the spark plugs too. Thanks again

The foam inside the cowl is for noise reduction.
With mixing fuel, there's two ways I do it.
One, I have set empty Jerry cans, 5l and 20l so I know how much oil to put in before fuel.
But, if I'm topping up the main tank , I watch the fuel amount going in, say it's 13l to fill a 20l tank, then I calculate the oil needed for 13l and put it in, as the other 7l is already premixed.
Thank you for the advice.
So that foam inside is it better to remove it as it's getting all over the inside of the motor?

While I have the time in lockdown I took the tank out and emptied it and there was a lot of rubbish inside the tank and fuel was very dirty and some water in there, we cleaned it out and will put it back in and fresh fuel and try the gulf western 2 stroke oil, just waiting for it to be delivered.
Just a question since my tank in an in-floor tank and has the fuel cap in the back, is it best to mix it in a Jerry can and then fill it up, I'm guessing that's the safest way to make sure the mix is always spot on?
Another question, my outboard engine cowling inside it has a foam and it's all coming off and little pieces everywhere if I remove this will there be any problems with that or Is it just mainly for noise reduction?
Thanks again guys for all your help.

Thanks, I’m in the Georges river LGA so I have some time on my hands now. So I will be emptying the tank and start fresh new tank of fuel and 2 stroke oil and check the spark plugs see how that goes. Thanks again guys for your help

Thank you all really appreciate your help, I will put fresh fuel and try the gulf oil and see how it goes and let you all know.

@Alex75, have you changed the type of two stroke oil? what are you using currently?
Only reason I ask is that I normally use Gulf Western oil, but a while back I used Penzoil for a short time.
for me, Penzoil was worst oil ive ever used, ran more smoky, left a big sludge that looked like it blew all the gear seals and left mixes oil water everywhere.
Also, keep in mind, its an old motor, so as others have said, try new plugs, and do a compression check. If you can take it out for a run, then do so. I think boat maintenance is allowed, and maybe an hour on the water might be the go, but get proper approval from local cop shop and maritime before you do. Just get relevant paperwork so you dont get booked. Im sure they will let you go for a run for that reason. Thanks mate really appreciate the advice, I used penrite marine 2 stroke. Like one of the other guys said maybe empty the tank and put some fresh fuel in it also. So is gulf western the better option for 2 stroke oil?
thanks again

Is it VRO?
When the VRO fails, in my experience, they over oil.
In my case large amounts of unburned oil through the exhaust, particularly after a period of extended lay up.
I had oil under the cowling and running down the leg (the outboards, not mine!), as well as black unburned oil from the prop exhaust.
If that is your issue, replacement is expensive.
I chose to replace mine, but the cheaper and probably more reliable alternative is to convert to premix by installing a blanking kit to the VRO.
Good luck, I hope you get it properly diagnosed and sorted.
Hi thanks for the reply, mine is not a VRO.

Looks like you are using engine oil instead of proper two stroke oil , that is the milky oil on the ground . Also the un burnt oil running out of the lower leg . The engine would have been running like a dog ,
I definitely used two stroke oil, it was running great last time we took it out.

Hi Guys
Need some help, due to somethings happening I haven't been able to start my boat in over 2 months, I started it today and all this dirty oil water came out and on the side look like old was coming out of the side see the below video.
I took it out over 6months ago and washed it and flushed it.
If anyone can help me out if this means somethings wrong or do I need to take it out and open it up.
I'm new to boating and repairs this is something for my son and I to learn on and update later on, so any help would be great.

Hi All
just an update haven’t had much time to work on the motor. So I have done the carby rebuild and new fuel pump and it’s starting a lot better.
im planning on taking it out for a test on Friday morning when I put it in gear and accelerated a bit didn’t sound very smooth sounded a lot better I will try and put a video up, new spark plugs, I’ve been running it and have 2 fuel filters not a lot of rubbish coming out of the tank.
maybe i need to fix the idling, haven’t done it before if anyone can help me with that.

ok, cool, carry on then
Just rang Moby and he said that design was on a lot of older carbys but they used to get stuck a lot so that’s why they put the wire.
thanks again -

sometimes they have a little spring under them to help lift, not sure, try to remove it as it might have gunk inside stopping from needle coming up.
saying that, some rely on actual fuel pressure to lift them.
Ring Moby Marine and ask them for a price on a kit
There’s no spring underneath and I rang hunts marine and the guy there said usually there’s a wire to connect the valve, he said he wouldn’t trust one if it didn’t have it, he said their kits all come with the wire for the value, I’ve ordered the kit through them already.

If you want to drain the tank, just disconnect the fuel line from the engine and then use the squeeze bulb to start a flow out in to a container lower than the tank. Is it easy to get the fuel tank out?
Your filters will have been giving you some protection against rubbish in the tank. Does that one have a fuel filter under the cover too?
Yeah it has one under the cover, see the picture to how much crap was in there

Hi All,
I took off the fuel pump and there was a lot of rubbish inside, I also took the carby off and it wasn’t too bad but the gaskets were all broken, I’ve ordered new carby kit and fuel pump. I will change the hoses too.
im guessing there’s rubbish in the tank, the tank is now full and it’s a metal tank, what would be the best way to clean it, is it best to remove the fuel or do I get a pump and fuel filters and run the fuel like out of the tank and back in if you know what I mean?
ive attached a photo of the fuel that was inside the fuel filter.

Y9ou initially also asked if the motor is sitting too low (and should you raise it up a hole or two).
Looking at your photos i definitely think its sitting too low (your cavitation plate is in line with the bottom of the hull, that should be kissing the water at full throttle and correctly trimmed out while your on the plane.
Some purists would have the cavitation plate out of the water at full throttle, that works for lakes and rivers where there's no swell, not so much for seas where swell/chop which will cause the prop to come out of the water when set too high (In My Opinion/Experience anyway)
Thank you very much, yeah I had a guy come and have a look and he too said to raise it up by 2 holes and use the current holes on the transom that are there.

As Antony has said the Breather should be open - also make sure that the hose connecting the breather to the tank has no kinks.
If you suspect fuel delivery is the cause then you should also replace the fuel filter, fuel hose and primer bulb from the tank to the motor - hoses perish on inside and debris can be causing blockage etc. Also check the low pressure fuel pump is delivering fuel to the carby.
But these are all guesses - do you have a video/sound recording of motor in gear when you apply throttle?cheers Zoran
Thanks for the info I will do all these that you have mentioned.
I don’t have a recording I remembered after I got of the boat, the speed was like at quarter full throttle and the power just wasn’t there.
im about to do the fuel filter and carby and I will change the hoses.
I will take off the water separator filter today and see how the fuel looks, he said he filled it up before I picked it up, but worried how long the old fuel was sitting in the tank. It’s a steel tank under the floor.

I'm surprised nobody has asked this question before but Is the water you drained from the hull fresh OR salt water ?.
If fresh it's probably rain water but if salt there could be a fracture somewhere in the hull. A lot of spray and wave action can put some salt water inside the boat but that much water seems a lot.
Frank
Hi Frank,
I actually didn’t check. But when I called him after I found this water he told me that he had kept it at a friends house and at one stage there was a lot of rain over a week and when he went to pick it up the boat had a lot of water inside and he had left the bungs in. Plus I have found open screw holes under the carpet also look like someone screwed some brackets in and then removed them but didn’t fill up the holes.

Those breathers are always open. You might want to consider installing a water separator filter in the fuel line. Cheap insurance and easy to do yourself.
When you put your new bungs in, consider making the holes over sized, then fill the holes with epoxy and re-drill for the bugs. The reason for doing this is to seal the transom wood.
Cheers
Thank you very much, the boat had a water separator filter.
