    Hey guys

Anyone got any good ideas for a 12ft rod for my 8000 saragosa?

Got it matched with a 12-24kg 9ft rod but want to shift it to a longer rod for beach fishing. It's running 50lb jbraid and I prefer to match it to a rod that's rated to run 50lb after bad experiences previously with rod guides and too heavy line. Budget is 200 or under preferably.

Much appreciated if anyone can help

Was thinking of a 12ft daiwa sensor sandstorm but would love to know any other options if anyone has any

Go to a tackle shop not a chain store one that specializes in only fishing and don't think you will be catching huge fish

Agreed, big chain stores usually don't have as much good info of the area as the small tackle stores...people from the smaller tacklestores know the areas way better than most of the young employees at your common big chain stores

I don't think there is any "secret" beaches, if you put in the time, you will get one...eventually. I am not an expert, but have got a few over the years, I like a nice deep gutter, and a beach with some reef/rocks just offshore  or a creek/river running out on them seem to be the best.

Same here, always seem to have a better chance in deep gutters close to structure and little creeks

  7. Few nights ago headed down to Wollongong harbour breakwall not long before sunset in chase of a few salmon and tailor... bit of a north-easterly blowing but the breakwall was still packed but managed to find a decent spot at the end.

Threw a 40g samaki flashboost minnow in rainbow and a 50gram lazer metal around just before the sun went down and picked up 2 tailor just over 30cm...released. The bite was on for the bait fishos so as it got dark I threw out my own bait under a float with a glow stick attached and after getting good tailor every cast I thought I may aswell get a feed out of it and after catching about 15 or so I kept 7. Glow sticks are a must when float fishing there at night especially when everyone else is using them as it helps avoid line tangles because you know where to cast. Also crucial to bite detection. Bait of choice was salted pilchard, tailor fillet, and salted yakka. Sad to see many had kept alot more than their bag limit and was very hard to warn them as many where non English speakers.

Apart from that an awesome sesh with pretty much a fish a cast and a few nights feed. Also lost 2 salmon on the ledge but that happens20230220_224138.thumb.jpg.32e3e4ed9ec489f6f94f8fa28dc97edc.jpg

Most of my fishing for pelagics has been from the boat trolling lures and using livies or bait. Recently I've been getting more into casting lures from the rocks and could use some pointers from more experienced fishos.

I'm based in Sydney around botany bay so my target species are tailor, salmon, kingfish and bonito.

My go-to setup is a saltist mq 4000 spooled with 300m PE2(41lb) braid on an 8ft 6-12kg td black rod and I also bring a heavier setup with either a Daiwa bg 5000(50lb line) or daiwa revros 6000(30lb line) on a 9ft6 PE2-5 saltist bw rod.

I use about a rod length of flouro leader, 20-40lb for the light setup and 30-60lb on the heavy

The lures I use are stickbaits and poppers between 100-160mm and 30-60g and also afew 20-40g metals.

I've gone rock fishing, using only lures about 5 times now and I haven't caught a single fish. Is there something I'm doing wrong/should change or do I just have to keep pumping out casts?

When the weather warms up your chances of catching should also improve. My most successful lure fishing off the rocks is usually in autumn  -in saying that, you will still catch fish now, but I don't get out as much now as I would in late summer and autumn.

Those lures all look alright, and I can also recommend coco rigs and micro jigs

    Hi All,

With the actual weather being different to what was forecast yesterday I reached out to new Fishraider @Ryan.f to see if he could come out to play. He could so we met at Mosman bay.

When we met the other day he was using a 9 foot rod, 2500 sized reel and 12lb braid. Not the first outfit I would have suggested. Turns out that when he walked into the tackle store his first line was that he wants to catch kingfish (everybody wants to catch kingfish). All well and good if they are around but then I explained why it was better to start with a lighter outfit such as the ArrowZ I was using. He managed to track a well priced 2nd hand one down which was one class above the 3-14gram lure rating I recommended. I was a little hesitant in recommending it as I suspected the butt length would be longer than I usually suggest. I left the choice up to him.

Down at Mosman bay he had his 2500 reel and newly acquired rod. To see the limitations of the outfit for what I teach I put on my reel (he is English so uses the handle on the left). I tried a 70mm sugapen which I then got to walk the dog. I then demonstrated the sub surface walk the dog with a 3" plastic. That went pretty well too. The lesson then started in earnest. Had him put his reel on the rod and then the 70mm sugapen. I pointed out that if we could get that lure properly walking the dog then the same technique would work for bent minnows, MMD splash prawns and a variety of other topwater lures. The bugger had it working more or less properly the first time he tried it. He has fishing talent but lacks local experience. We spent a little time refining the retrieve and then started to throw in the pauses and speed changes which makes these lures so effective on the sandflats. Didn't get any hits but in 5m of water I wasn't expecting any.

We worked our way through, 3" minnows, halco twistys and vibes. Each accompanied with an explanation as to when and where and how we might use them. Along the way he had some hits and then the rod started to shake. Out of the depth comes a lovely little flounder which dropped at the wharf but we'd seen it. Ryan's confidence was growing as that was his first Australian fish on lure. A little while later he picked up another flounder which stayed around for a photo opportunity (I'll let Ryan post) before being released.

Now that we had covered the core concepts we worked our way around the rest of the bay as we would normally. First the channel near the marina where we both hooked and dropped flathead at the wall. I lost a lure when I was being a bit too cocky casting in the gaps between the boats.

Then to the back of the bay where we worked on covering as much ground as effectively as possible. Surprisingly no fish there but we were at a bit of a time limit at this stage.

Final stop were the jetties near the sailing club. We started using vibes and grubs at this stage. I hooked and landed a lovely little dusky flathead. I demonstrated where the spikes near the gills were and got him to feel the raspy teeth.

Time was up but it was a very enjoyable fishing session for both of us. I think Ryan has a newfound appreciation for the pleasure of fishing with light gear.

    Regards,

    Derek

Great write up and report, and well done for the helping hand.

Funny what you say about using the reel on the left, I have a friend who is left handed like me whereas he reels with his left and I reel with my right

Sam @papafish and Neil @big Neiland I decided to have a crack at Hairtail after some secret intel that they might be “on” in the Berowra Bays. Legend Sam made us an outstanding Chinese dinner to have on the boat and we set up to “slay em’”.

We had premium pilchards, live Yakkas (which were very very slow at West Head) and were set for a torrid night of pulling them in, but even though we had a few light touches (which gave us some hope), we were spectacularly unsuccessful. The only fish caught was a bream which Sam boated, other than that, all we caught were Yakkas (could have saved the trip to West Head). Mind you they were amongst the biggest Yellow tail (Cowan Young) I’ve ever caught (eating size) and these little guys punch above their weight - like mini-kingfish.

We left the ramp about 3pm and targeted Jewies for the turn of tide and then to bait ground and then set up for th night. Conditions were perfect - but no Hairtail. At 9pm we went back to the Jew grounds, but again, not a thing 😞😞. The wind picked up about 9.30, se we headed back to the ramp and off home

A very disappointing night of fishing, but great catching up with fellow raiders.

NO PICS a nothing to show (you’ve all seen Yakkas before)

No fish can't ruin a night like that... think of people who pay hundreds of dollars to cruise round on the water for a few hours, not even fishing!

A fishless night is easy to forget when you have a few mates and some good chat

    Good summary of the shows.

It is for those reasons I have blocked out the use of the name of the big chain stores.

When we first took fishraider on and at various points along the 18 years I asked them to sponsor fishraider forum. They would only ever give us a few vouchers.

On Google searches with anything fishing related fishraider forum content would be at the top. We never needed those chain stores to help.

I agree with everyone that most of the content online and by influencers is heavily sponsored these days.

That's the reason I joined fishraider. The site was always the most relevant and always at the top of the page. I don't fish as much these days but like sharing knowledge.

Show wise I don't mind watching shroom, the fmimf, and flickwithmick, also many others already mentioned but I prefer fishin over watching fishin!

Thanks for the tips @noelm, wasn't really thinking about how the diameter of the leader would affect bites 🤔 Considering that I'll go with 15 pounds fluorocarbon instead of 20, I've found one that seems to be quite strong and abrasion resistant and it isn't too thick.

Related to your point about snelled hooks, I might use a single hook for a couple of sessions and see how it goes. To be fair, had two incidents with the double hooks that made me reconsider them:

    1. One of the times my leader snapped it broke right next to the closer hook (the fish went away with the other). I'm not sure if this happened because the fish bit the line right there or because the knot in that hook created extra strain in the line and it snapped.

    2. The salmon was gut hooked on the further away hook, and while I was handling it the other hook went into its eye and the fish started moving like crazy for a while.

Anyways, I suppose during this time I have to try many things and stick with what works for me.

I agree mate, I took lots of advice when I was not having any success beach fishing, but I always learnt the most when I was actually out there fishing. So if unsure, you can only try!

The first try was a troll around Dobroyd for no takers.

Then around North Head  and again no surface fish, although there was a lot of deep activity on the sounder.

Out to DY wide then and a couple of fish on the first drop seemed good, but then it got quite and spikeys took over.

Finished up with a few keepers after a few battles with Port Jackson’s and Rays.

It was a bit bumpy on the way home despite the absence of much breeze.

Thanks guys for the quick replies!

Has anyone here had issues with yakka and parasites in regards to sashimi? I thought it would be fun to bring some soy sauce on the boat as I’ve done it on a charter with kingfish but of course if it’s high risk there’s no harm in bringing them back and doing all that preparation

I've done yellowtail sashimi before with soy sauce, salt, and lemon.

The fish was caught under an hour before and though I don't each much sashimi, it was pretty good. I didn't notice any parasites but personally if I did I wouldn't eat them as sashimi. Yakkas are great eating in my opinion and I regularly eat the bigger ones. You can cook them in many ways and obviously, as sashimi.

    Hey guys,

I haven’t done much fishing off the stones.

Going down to pretty beach and looking for a rod to use off snapper point that I can also use flicking 20-30g metals from the beaches there too.

any suggestions for something under $200? It’ll be paired with a 5000 vanford

    thanks

For a cheaper but good quality option, there are the 9ft 6-8kg or 10ft 4-7kg shimano catanas that are awesome in my opinion, going quite cheap at some stores at the moment.

    My other suggestions would be-

    Maikuro 9ft 6-8kg or 10ft 4-7kg

    Penn prevail 9ft or 10ft

I'd say all of these rods would be alright with a 5000, especially considering the featherweight of the vanfords.

1 of my favourite rods at the moment for chucking light jigs and metals is a 9ft symmetry rod. It came in a combo and I sold the reel for a good price and bought a 4000 nasci for it. It's awesome for throwing metals, and now I have a 9ft catana as well, I can say the catana is also great.

    Hope this helps, cheers

  17. Just with fluoro mainline...from what I've seen 4lb and 6lb fluoro mainlines seem quite popular in the USA for trout fishing, though I personally would go with braid.

As said before, it has its advantages but so does braid, so now I'm starting to wonder

  18. Hi guys.

I have this site pop up quite often when I surf the internet for something fishing related and to be honest, it's awesome. I felt guilty taking all the knowledge and not giving out any so I became a member.

I'm a keen fisho, trying most types of Saltwater fishing but usually stick to rocks, beaches, and sometimes estuary. I've also decided to get into bassing more these past summers and will do when season opens again.

I'm based south of Sydney and am strictly landbased, so I get to know all the nooks and crannies of my local spots.

    P.s,

There is a picture of me on the internet somewhere holding my first ever Kingfish that was 43cm way to close to the camera, if you ever see this, pretend it isn't me.
