  1. Put both the red and black brake blocks on while learning. Magging involves the addition of small rare earth magnets glue inside close to the spool and they help to control it. Do an internet search for magging reels, or magging torium 30 and you should find more. Theres a place at botany that sells the magnets and they are easy to put in.

I have an abu7500c3 that has a level wind, casts like a dream and the level wind is not a problem, and does help so you dont need to think about the line lay and you can crank lures in fast. BUt my other overheads dont use a level wind - its a matter of getting used to them.

  2. They dont take up room so always leave one or two in the box. If you see a bust up you can cast them out, and even if no wash can still use them. I use them in the hacking and there isnt a wash there but they still work if the right fish passes.

  3. Nothing like destroying a nice sea grass area then building a boat ramp face due south. That will make for some interesting launches and retrievals. I would have loved to have seen the container area built up on pylons instead of filling it in with sand etc. Then at least we could have had some more shelter for fish to get in and hide under and provide new habitat. It will be interesting to see how this affects the currents and sand movements of the bay.

  4. For fish like tailor and salmon which try to throw the hooks, changing the rear hooks to singles such as decoy jig singles with the inline eye makes a big difference.

Braid for me works best giving longer casts and a more direct feel of the popper. On eggbeaters, a rod length of mono on the end gives the line a bit a stretch for shock absorption. On overheads stick with more mono and use the braid as backing for species which pull a lot of line. Poppering is great fun !

  5. Level winds work well on some overheads but depends on which ones. I like them on ABU overheads and on baitcasters....but the level wind saltist and shimano tekotas arent good for distance casting. If you arent comfortable winding line on manually, get the level wind saltist it you will find it more enjoyable with less hassle, especially if only lobbing baits out. Great reels regardless if level wind or not.

  6. What do you want to do with it....casting lures , jigging, or bait fishing......if casting lures etc any kind of distance dont get the levelwind versions.

Might be a dumb question, but have you used an overhead before ? Its not that hard to lay the line on with your fingers if it doesnt have a level wind, but if you are dropping baits down, get the level wind version and it will much easier.

  7. I salt gars down by putting a dish out and lining the bottom with newspaper, then salt. Lie the gars down belly down into the salt and cover the gars with a thin layer of salt, more around the head and the sides of the gut. Leave for 1-2 days max in the fridge ( the tray covered with glad wrap) . Then take them out and vaccum pack them. Last a year easily. The salt draws the moisture out. I dont like packing baits with salt in the fridge, just the bait after its been salted and wiped down. Then you can cast them around for a lot longer. You can do the same for other baits.

  8. I fins that skipping poppers and plugs work best. They leave a great bubble trail and can work in calm and choppy conditions, and dont roll over themselves. A bit of speed can get shy kings going..also works well on bonnies and salmon.

  9. Yep. came out no long ago..very nice reels.A touch lighter, less bearings than the saltigas. Saves some $$$ as well instead of the saltigas.

  10. Id love to see 70-75cm here as the limit.....the more that make it to this size more breeding stock and increase in size. Use bigger baits or lures..get bigger fish is my motto. They wont get to NZ size that easy though.
