  1. Gday raiders,

I have recently posted a thread with regards to a problem I am having with my tacho only reading 3000rpm at WOT.

Some have suggested I check the setting on the back of the tacho, as it could possibly be set incorrectly.

    Well, I have since checked, and here are the possible settings;

    4P

    6P

12P (this is the current setting)

Can anyone tell me if 12P is the right setting for my outboard?

Also, what do these codes actually mean???? I was expecting codes that represent the number of cylinders and whether its a 2 or 4 stroke engine.

    Cheers,

    jeff

  2. Just a quick report. Pics to follow tomorrow.

Finished work early and with the great news that the forecasted storm was going to hit tomorrow morning rather than this afternoon, there was no other choice but to hit the harbour for a quick session.

Put the boat in at Roseville and motored up to CG. It was quite windy and choppy from harbour traffic. After a quiet wait, we burlied hard and soon got on to some keeper sized trevally. As the light faded, the skies lit up with lightning and the wind stopped. The water became glassy, the air felt warm and you could almost feel the electricity of the approaching storms.

Meanwhile, the trevally started getting bigger and the bites more ferocious.... no more tap, tap, taps, just massive hits and runs.

Pulled anchor when the lightning became more frequent and the wind started coming from the south. My mate trolled a live yakka through the spit on the way home for zip (had a massive bust off last week using the same technique).

Total tally, 9 keeper trevally, several throw backs and a keeper red in 2 hours. Not bad for a couple of newbies to boating, I thought.

    Gday Choad,

    Good catch!

Can I ask what bait you were using for the trevs?

  3. Hey All

Myself (Dan) and Greg got back from up north after some pathetic fishing. So we decided to hit the harbour 3 days running, bait, big hooks and hold on

Monday Greg went out by himself as I was sleeping a BIG week off. I wont go into specifics as this could be a long report. But tally for Monday was 14 squiddies, one 65cm jew, several good size choppers and alot of other bits and pieces. A HUGE improvement over the previous week of fishing. All these fish came from within mid harbour, after we hit a few spots and finally throw the pick over the side

Tuesday both of us hit the water at 3am for sum squiddies. Disappointing effort 2 squiddies :mad3: . Hit the same spots as the previous day for zilch. Then fell back onto a gold ole favourite mark. BINGO,,, 70cm kingy,,, Mind you was the only fish that came aboard for the day

Wednesday saw greg out again by himself. I needed a sleepin :1prop: . He got 17 squiddies and decided at 6.03am with enough squid to hit the same mark as Tuesday. FIrst two baits saw a double hookup at exactly 6.07am, and you guessed it double.... PING :mad3: . Bugga! third bait down after re-rigging saw another 72cm kingy slapping on the deck :yahoo: . After than that nutting, and it was over by 7am....

Lesson learnt for both of us was the kingys are already feeding VERY early,,, they must have already adapted to daylight savings :biggrin2:

Are you guys going out again this Tuesday?

Im trying to get the day off work so, is it possible to tag along with you guys, and learn the ropes?

    I have a boat also.

  4. Its always a pleasure to see the smile on someone's face after catching there biggest fish, that was a great

day out,it always is when your getting amonst the fish like that. They also taste pretty good as well, especially

if you can cookem up fresh the same day that you catch them.

By the way how's the back & arms feeling today?

Your welcome anytime to give it another go!

    thanks;

    steve

    Hey Steve,

would you extend your invite to myself?

    Sounds like so much fun.

I have a 4.6m cuddy cabin so can take that out, but am pretty green when it comes to fishing, especially out at Browns.

  5. Hi Guys, all Tachos have a pulse setting. I am honestly not sure what the settings needs to be on a Yamaha, Spongy have a look behind the tacho and try the different settings in the water.

    Good pick-up wishin

    Huey.

OK, not sure what Im looking for, but will look anyway.

Also, I have an automotive induction tacho, but I think its only good for 4,6 or 8 cylinder engines, not 3 cylinders. So I was thinking I could still use it on the 6 cylinder setting, but just have to remember to double the reading.

  6. Hi Spongy, now we just have to confirm that the tacho is working correctly. If it is and you are only seeing the RPM you are talking about we need to make sure the engine is running on 3 cylinders and if it is than you are needing to go down to about a 13 inch.

As mentioned check and make sure there is nothing wrong with the outboard like no spark etc on one cylinder and then we can sort out the correct prop.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

    Thanks Huey,

I will check the tacho and let you know.

  7. Thanks everyone for their response.

Yes come to think about, the engine sure sounds like its spinning faster than 3200rpm. Will need to check if I have a faulty meter.

I will get the actual pitch of the prop and let you know.

Aluminium prop about 6 years old (came with the outboard new). It is slightly damaged but not too bad.

This "problem" has been around ever since Ive had the boat (3 years).

I didnt think I had a problem until I discovered my WOT is only 3300rpm.

I had Blacktown boats have a look at the outboard a year ago and they suggested to lift the outboard up 1 notch. I think it has improved my top end speed very slightly, but at the cost of some cavitation on some sharp turns.

I will get more info and possibly some pictures of the prop.

Again, thanks for this forum and all your help.

    Jeff

  8. Hi fellow raiders,

I think I need a new prop for my outboard.

I have a Yamaha 2stroke 70hp on the back of a Savage 4.6m fibreglass cuddy cabin.

With a full load its difficult to get on the plane.

Currently top speed is around 33knots at 3200rpm, using a 13 1/4 pitch aluminium prop.

What are your recommendations for a new prop specs?

Im thinking I need a smaller pitch prop to get my rpm up. If so what size pitch should I be looking at?

Also another thing, any comments on using those foil/wing attachments on the leg of the outboard?

Is it going to improve performance/efficiency?

    cheers,
