  1. I was searching around the internet and found this deal.

Shimano Stradic Fishing Reel 6000 FI with 8 2 piece Ugly Stick Fishing Rod(6-10kg).

    Total for $369.

Can anyone shed some light on this setup? Is this setup worth the money I'm dying for an upgrade and this is what I can afford.

What would be the cheapest option? buy them separately or get it as a combo? 6000 is a bit large for my liking, IF I was to buy it separately I would get 4000 or 5000.

    Cheers

depending on what model Ugly stik, but unlikely to be a good deal.

Im looking at a Stradic 8000 from overseas and you can pick them up for around $200.

Also 6000 model is pretty big. I would be looking at 4000 or 5000 for a 6-10kg rod.

  2. Yakkas are at pretty much any wharf or structure, slimies iv heard are around south head. Sound out a school and then berley them up.

a couple of weeks ago I picked up 4-5 slimies off Chinamans Beach near the spit bridge in 20m of water. Again, sound them out.

Balmoral is currently plagued with baby sweep. However there are smallish yakkas in amongst them.

  3. Hi all

I am new on the fishraider and new on the water.

    I have a 475 bowrider witha 60HP 4 stroke.

At the moment just cruising up and down the harbour.

Isn't there a ramp, close to long reef? Is it that you get the Yakkas before, that you get out through the harbour?

Normally get my yakkas inside the harbour, then head out. There is a ramp near long reef, but its under repair atm, also, it a very hairy ramp to launch and retrieve from.

  4. Hey mate how long does it take you to get out to longy from the harbour? And what size engine do you have? i just got my boat and pretty keen to get out there. i got heaps of gps coords for wrecks around there from various dive sites, is that what you look for or do you just look for school son the sounder?

    Hey Dicko,

My boat is a 4.8m fibreglass cuddy cabin with 70hp 2stroke. It goes well enough and I can comfortably cruise to longy at around 20knts on a calm day. So the trip takes about 30min.

Yeah I have some coords as well so I try and visit a few on the way out, but normally when I get there I just cruiise around looking for reefs with fish activity.

We should hook up for a joint attack on the kingies. Let me know next time you're out.

    Cheers man,

    Jeff

    g'day Jeff..

well done on the kings mate... sounds like a good day out..

hopefully catch up soon for a yakking session...! bout time i landed one of those bastards from the yak!

    cheers mate

    kiro

    Hey Kiro,

    Long time no hear.

Yeah def need to do more yakking. Im actually thinking of yakking in middle harbour this Wednesday morning.

If you can make it great, otherwise another time for sure.

  5. Quick report for Long Reef on Saturday.

Picked up 10 livies (yakkas and slimies) from around Balmoral and headed out to Longy. Got there around 8am and was met with 10 other boats. We stayed a couple of hundred metres south of the group of boats and found a small school of activity on the sounder. We dropped the livies down and immediately had a big run. Wasn't expecting it so soon and didnt have the drag set, so I got reefed in 30 seconds. Next put down a whole squid and it too didnt last long. This time I was prepared and immediately put pressure on the fish, but still line was peeling off fast. kept increasing the drag on the 5000stradic and slowly gained some line back. This king was fat and probably the fatest kingie Ive caught. It went 75cm. Daleboy also landed a similar king shortly after, but he was using a fresh slimey strip on his little rod spooled with 15lb braid. We had to up anchor and chase this one down, as daleboy was losing more line. After 10-15 min we got him on board.

All up we landed about 8-9 kingies but only 2 were legal. We also lost a few more. So all up a great day's kingie fishing.

    Conditions were fantastic out there.

  6. G'day all!

Went for a fish this morning and ran into Greg who had an awesome kingie on board.

I took a photo for him as he had no camera.

Good to meet ya Greg and well done on the kings.

Good to see the water temp over 20C with plenty of baitfish to be had.

I managed a few fish but nothing like The whopper in the pic.

    Cheers

    Good work Greg,

I was the other boat slow trolling the same area and said gday.

I didnt have the same success as Greg, but it was a superb day out on the water.

I found it tough going without being able to find any live bait that day.

  7. OUT ONCE AGAIN WITH BIG KEV AND AS USUAL OUT LATE AFTER 9 :wife: . BACK TO SCHOOL, SO TAKING MY BOY TO SCHOOL THEN IT'S A BIG HOP DOWN TO THE RAMP. WENT AFTER SOME LIVIES BUT THEY ARE HARD TO FIND. CAN ANY OF YOU GUYS TELL ME WHERE I MIGHT BE ABLE TO SCORE SOME LIVIES BESIDES YARRA BAY? ANYWAY WE DECIDED TO HEAD OUTSIDE AND TRY OUR LUCK AROUND THE POINT NEAR KURNELL AND AS SOON AS WE TURNED THE CORNER IT WAS A MASSIVE AND I MEAN MASSIVE SCHOOL OF KINGFISH BONITO AND SAMON ALL WORKING THE WATER MUNCHING ON BABY PILLIES. WE HURLED OUT A FEW HALCO 20 GRAM SHINNERS AND WE WERE HOOKED. ON 12LB LINE WE WERE NO MATCH FOR THESE KINGS. WE GOT A FISH CLOSE TO THE BOAT AND :ranting2::ranting2: PING ALL OVER RED ROVER. IT WAS A GOOD FISH OF AROUND 75CM'S :mad3: SCHOOL HUNG AROUND FOR A WHILE BUT THE BUST OFF'S WERE FREQUENT. I'M STICKING ON THE BRAID NEXT TIME I GO OUT. WE DID LAND A HEFTY SIZED BONITO AT 50CM. THEY WERE ONLY TAKING 15 TO 20 GRAM SHINNERS. ANY BIGGER THEY WEREN'T EVEN TOUCHING IT. PLASTICS WERE GETTING HITS TOO BUT IT TOOK A WHILE. SHINNERS STRAIGHT AWAY. SO A MIXED BAG FOR THE DAY WITH TREVALY BONITO AND SWEAP. ALL IN ALL NOT A BAD DAYS FISHING BUT IT WAS WORTH SEEING THAT SCHOOL. DEFINATELY WILL BE READY NEXT TRIP WITH THE RIGHT LINE.:thumbup: TIGHT LINES!!!

    Thanks for the report.

Hope to get out tomorrow in the yak.

  8. Fished around the heads on Friday morning and had no luck.

Tried trolling all sorts of plastics, hard bodies, deep divers and even a fly out

of the Kayak but not a bite.

Did not see any surface or bird action, went home very dissappointed.

Was anyone else out on Friday and how did you go ?.

We were out Friday arvo trolling the heads.

Got a couple of hits but failed to hook up properly. Im guessing bonnies.

Sambo schools came out late in the arvo, but as usual, fussy as anything.

  9. Hey all,

Heading out early tommorrow. I know the council are going to be doing some construction at Drummoyne Ramp.

Could anyone confirm if it is open or closed at this present time?

    Thanks in Advance

    Andrew

Still open as of last week. Pretty sure it was open on Friday too.

  10. My first post here guys have been an avid reader and member for a long time now.Took a da off work yesterday just to go fishing in the georges after reading all the informative posts here on f/r.

Got to the boat ramp about 9am with hopes and dreams of landing my first jew(have been fishin for plenty of years now and thats one of the fishes that never made it into the bucket, the elusive jew).

Went out past alfords point bridge and after the turn to the right i anchored up and i wasnt going home until i catch what i came here for.i have been told for catching a jewie u need patience and that i had.

i was there for around 3 hours and after a lot of burley and a couple of beers not a single bite

so i headed back up past the boat ramp to try the other side towards the bridge(the one that looks like the harbour bridge)and waited patiently, brought a stack of bait live nippers, fresh squid and pilchards, got a few taps on the nippers but nothing to get to excited over thats when i thought i might try a lure.

i have never tried lure fishing and always seemed a bit skeptical but i thought hey i have the day off and it was with plenty of time it was only 6pm so why not give it a go.Casted out about 10-15 times in all directions and nothing from there i started thinking what a waste of time but still continued to cast out anyway and WHACK!!!! all hell broke loose my rod tip buckled down south and i thought oh my god this is going to snap my ultra light rod and 8lb braid into bits. After about 10mins of going for screaming runs to the left i ended up catching my first ever jewie.i screamed out in excitement yessss and the old couple that live along the bank on the georges river thought there must have been something wrong with me but that did not bother me one bit,i was wrapped.i thought i might stay around for a little while longer and casted the lures well into the night, didnt realise the time and i got back into the picnic point boat ramp@2.30am with a 68cm jew 4 flatties biggest 54cm's and 3 legal trevally.Got back home at 3.30am and took another sickie(no sleep and was to happy to be at work).I still have a smile on my face now as im typing this post and i can now say that after only being on the georges river once before and not catching much i believe the jewies it produces and am genuinely hooked on using lures!!!!Will be back there on saturday!!!!

Ah congrats on your success. You have every right to be excited. Good work mate.

  11. Nope, had live slimies, herring and yakkas in the boat. Trolled south head for zip, in desperation driffed for many undersized lizzards, water cold and green and yuk. Gave up, went home.

    Southerly,

Can you let me know where you got those slimies?

A month or so ago I found them around CG. But havent seen them since.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

  12. Hi fellow members,

i have been on this forum for a few years and have decided that people using terms like spot X, and alluding to things arent being helpful to new members. therefore i am offering advice to anyone that pm's me and giving up my spot X's to encourage the next generation of fisho's.

    the rules:

    *Ask anything you want

*Any info given to me by other raiders wont be disclosed

*Botany Bay is my specialty but the hawkesbury has been good to me over the years

*Jewfish and Kingfish have been my fish of choice

*RESPECT THE OCEAN AND RETURN ANYTHING UNDERSIZE

*RESPECT FELLOW FISHERMAN. THE GUY NEXT TO YOU TO MIGHT END UP SAVING YOUR LIFE ONEDAY!!!

    * If you have a boat my info will probably be more helpful.

    Just PM me

    Ali

    Good onya Ali,

Its great there's still people willing to share their knowledge.

I am fairly new to Botany Bay so will def contact you for some tips. If you need a couple of tips for Sydney harbour, just PM me.

  13. Hi all,

After using the advise from fellow raiders, we had a bucket of yakkas ready for the peak. The yakkas were caught at Moll Point.

Hit the peak around 11am in a stiff easterly with a bit of chop on the water. Livies go down and we start jigging, and jigging and jigging until our arms are sore. No luck on the jig front, even though we see activity on the sounder. One on our mates lands a keeper kingie on the first drop of the yakka, but thats it for the next hour. We keep drifting over the peak and persist jigging whilst having the livies out, still nothing on the jig but we finally get some action on the livies and a couple of rats come on board. We give up jigging and start using slabs of fresh slimies and some salted slimies. The action picks up and the slimey baits are working. All up landed 8 kingies, but only 2 legal. Also a decent Morwong. Most caught on slimey baits, a couple on live yakkas and zip on the jig.

Also saw others landing rat kingies and bonito.

By around 2pm the wind died down and the conditions are fantastic.

Off the water by 5pm. All in all a good days fishing.

    Sorry no pics. Next time.

Will prob try long reef next time, after reading the reports from today

    Jeff

  14. Great effort there.

If you could provide some further detail that would be great.

I would like to try Longy as well.

Today we hit the peak and managed 8 kingies, but only 2 were legal.....Still a good day for me.

  15. My last few outings I found yakkas at the oil wharf, and slimeys can be found at the

Drums, last week they were at Moll pt by the bucket load, you gotta

berley hard though to bring em to your boat.

    Thanks for your replies all,

I will give these spots a try, I have plenty of burley so I guess if they are around I should find them.

I know slimies are the bait of choice, but Im actually after yakkas as I dont have a good livie tank set up and yakkas do much better in a bucket. I normally keep a few slimies as slab baits though....

Im heading out to the peak tomorrow - hopefully with a bucket of livies ........

Any other raiders doing the same????

    Cheers,

    Jeff

  16. ive found i have to search a bit for them i havnt found a spot that always holds them consistently but "the sticks" near the oil wharf have worked for me and are worth a look.

    Thx,

Im not very familiar with the Bay. Is that the wharf next to the hot water outlet?

    where are the "sticks" exactly?

  17. Hi All

Has anyone caught or know of anyone that has caught a john dory in the harbour this season

    Cheers

Yep, Daleyboy landed one using a livie from a trench just outside Rose Bay. Lucky bstard.....
