  1. Hi guy's, I know that the standard marine radio is VHF, But do people use UHF at all? or the standard 27MHZ am 40 channel?

I have a handheld 40 CH UHF and Iam usualy on scan to scan all forty.. Is there a standard channel on UHF I should stay on?

as for the 27MHZ Is it just as good as the marine if you are going to need it? I have a little 40 channel am set that I was going to put in the boat? If this would do what channels should I be on?

My third option is just to go marine band I guess. But, I dont want to go to far outside without any radio at all and the marine radio is just abit exspencive at the moment.. any suggestions or help would be very thankfull. :1fishing1:

  2. Hi all , I have a 15 ft Hamilton Jet. Fiberglass hull it is white with yellow trim. (as per photo) :mad3:

I have only had this boat for about 3 months and it has been a beauty..it has marks that look like greasy finger marks and smudges.. Some of them have come off with a scrub with warm soapie water but alot are still there on the hull as well as the leather upholstery, which is white and yellow also..

On the bottom of the hull it is just dirt from the water I think? scrubing does not get this off? Any ideas? or should I just buff it and re paint?

Is there a cleaner I can get to clean this up? Or do i need to just persist? Or maybe polish?

  3. To start i would just like to thanks all the raiders out there that have given me help over the last couple of weeks to catch my first jewie...

I got to Parsley boat ramp about 10pm on friday. Loaded up and headed to flint & steel. Puton the squid and got Smashed but, the bugger headed for the anchor rope, and I had to cut him loose. Came back down the river to Gunya point and driftered back and forth all night. 2 flatties a heap of cat fish and a few little snapper. after sun up headed over to lion island. a few eel and 2 snapper. There was a congregation at flint & steel so i headed back and settled in with the others.. bait fish and tailor were schooling and everyone was into them. Once the school had mooved on we went to broklyn for lunch. So I went to the rail bridge to try my luck. Drifting in around the 3rd pilon from the northside backwards and forwards we went.. Every pass we scored. After 2 hours we had 5 jewie's from 55cm up to 70cm. (pic's will follow asap when I download them). as the night went on we drifted backwards and forwards on the tide between the bridge and gunya point.. 3 flatties and 2 nice bream.

so once again thankyou to you all for the tips and help and I hope to go again very soon.. Speaking to others The big jewies are getting harder to find, and I did notice this trip there were not as many being cleaned at the ramp, so I guess I was one of the lucky one's...

Well as for the pic's......? some didnt come out....and some are not so good???? sorry guy's but here is one of my boat..15' Hamilton Jet and one of a cat fish and the small 50cm jewie.. I know it is just a legal jewie but that is what counts .. it is a jewie and it is legal...Once again thank you to everyone

  4. Hey mate this Hamilton Jet sounds just the shot for jew. Hitting the Hawkesbury ay ... ? ... Have you got room for me...?... and... cripes... a couple of parachutes so we can bail out if it gets too cloudy :D:lol:

    Cheers

    jewgaffer

  5. Hi to everyone out there.. Im hitting the H'berry around Flint & Steel and might even head out to lion island hoping for my first Jew..

I herd that the river was pretty muddy from the recent rain, and the fish have gone of the bight??? Can anyone give me an update...? I'm in a white with yellow trim 15' hamilton jet with a bimin. I will be around from about 6am Sat morning .. So if you see me there come and say hi . Good luck to all that are out , hope we all catch a few...

I am also going to try out around lion island

  6. g'day mate, hope you have a fun weekend!if juno or flint&steel are crowded or if there's a bit of a swell, you might like to try gunya as a back-up[run out tide].you can catch live bait there too.just anchor in behind the rocky point and cast your baits out ,make sure your on the sand or you'll get a lot of rubbish.you can also fish for bream while your waiting for the livies to go off. :biggrin2:

Thanks for that .. as I said if any one is out there and having a quite day come over and say hi :1welcomeani: ..I'm a big bloke and will have have a mate with me..My boat is a white with yellow trim hamilton jet..no name on the side

  7. Hope you do well mate

Apple Tree Bay or Akuna Bay may be a safer spot to leave your car and Trailer than Parsley for that long a period

    Just my thoughts

    KF

thanks for that I will take a look.. Im comming from bathurst so I will check it out

  8. Hi everyone I'm heading down to try for the big Jewie Australia Day weekend. I will be there for the whole weekend all around Flint & Steel and Juno.. Will try west head for some bait. I only have a little Hamilton jet 14 footer, white with yellow trim. So if you see me down there come over and say g'day. I would love to get some idea how it is all going down that way at the moment? and is there any particular spots to give a good crack? or what times are best? i will put the boat in at Parsley Bay rampand head straight .out :1fishing1:

To everyone else hope you all have good luck and nail that big one..

  9. I am heading down the Hawksberry in a week or so and am woundering if there are prawns running in Pittwater or Cowan creek? i will be fishing Flint & Steel as well as Juno and would like to get on to the prawns while I'm there.. If not , where would I find them? My next door neighbour just came back from pittwater and spence and got some great flathead and a 15kg Jew.. I hope to get a few my self.. :1fishing1::beersmile:

  10. the bait ground is just east of flint and steel at the tip of west head. there's a box on the shore which marks the spot. anchor...burley up with a some catfood...float a single size 10 hook with a small piece of prawn or fish flesh or whatever and let it drift. good luck.

Thanks for that i will give it a go this friday....

  11. I am very new to this live bait fishing , and I like the two spots at Juno and Flint & Steel. So, to do this well I have been told I need live bait such as yakka's, squid or yellow tail..Where would be some of the best spots close by to catch these and what sort of bait and rigs should i use to catch them ? I want to get amounst the jew's and good flatties that seem to be on offer at the moment at Juno and Flint & Steel. :1fishing1:

  12. G'day yarraone

First question what size do you want to catch? Small to 5kg, Medium to 15kg, Big 15kg plus?

Flint and Steel and Juno are excellent spots BUT you must know when and how to fish them. Don't think that just because you fish there you will catch a fish. For example I fished Juno yesterday for 5 hrs hard and with excellent bait and not even a tun of a reel. There were real good jew fishos on either side of me and also - nothing. The spots themselves can be divided up into many "subspots" and they all fish differently. It will take TIME and effort to learn each spot.

Fishing for Jew you will catch heaps of eels, sharks, flathead and rays. If you are catching them you are in the right area.

As far as rigs go everyone has their own recipe. Part of the fascination of Jew fishing is to find that special rig that works for you. The good Jew fishos I know stick to their rigs and they are mostly one hook, a length of leader, a swivel or two and a sinker. I would suggest experiment with a few and maybe come up with your own. Settle on your method, stick to it and persevere...it will happen. You will fish the same spot many many times and get nothing and then one day it will happen.

As far as bait goes - CATCH YOUR OWN FRESH BAIT!!!! Squid, Yakka, Slimey, Tailor, Pike, Mullet, and more.

You should spend the time and the effort to catch your own bait. This will teach you how the system works and you will find your own spots. By all means buy a bit to get you started catching the bait fish.

I also believe that the rod, reel, rodholder and line and or handline and springer are VERY important. Start with the right gear and you will be streets ahead.

If you pm me I can give you the name and number of the bloke at Parsley Bay - be warned $30 per kg for squid!

Hope this helps you a bit. I can help you with specific details if i know what you are after.

    cheers

    inhlanzi

Thanks this is very good advise.. as far as the size Im not fussed i would just like to catch good fish but the fight would be great to expierence, It does not have to be a jew but that would be my wish.. i had boats all around that were catching good fish of all types . Are there any markers that you can suggest that i look for to find the right spots to start?

Thanks for the help and I might head down there this thursday evening... :1fishing1::beersmile:

    g'day Yarra

for a start you're in the right spots - Juno, Flint & Steel, out wide in the weed as opposed to on top of the rocky reef is the place to be. Top of the tide is best - 2 hours either side is great.

You need 6/0 hooks on a running rig with a 6 oz snapper lead so the rig sits on the bottom and the sinker is on a runner sitting off the main line

then you need BIG squid, whole or livies - tailor, yakkas, slimeys etc - anything less than from your fingertips to the heel of your hand is too small - thus you need the 2 6/0 hooks ideally about 10 to 15cm apart

great fresh squid you'll get from the antique shop in brooklyn just up from the pub but it's expensive, if you can your own all the better. Try around West Head or in the weed behind Barrenjoey head

I've found Flint and steel very reliable for jewfish, anytime of the day, tide is more important than time BUT morning is best I believe.

    good luck

Thanks for that very helpfull..Any tips on cathing live bait? I have caught squid before but never tried to catch bait fish? realy keen to get all amongest it..

  13. Hey Lads,

Just looking to do a few day trips down from bathurst to the salty stuff as we have not alot of water and even less fish!! Just after some advice on Boat ramps and spots from about Sackville , Wisemans Ferry maybe to Spencer. I will mainly be flickin Sp's. Trying for flatties and bream and whatever else. Any help would be great, Cheers Boy's.

Hi I am also from Bathurst .. I normanly go a bit futher up towards broklyn but the ramp at Berowa water is great little ramp and grounds

  14. Hi everyone,

I'm from Bathurst NSW. I love going to Flint &Steel and around Juno Pt.

I went down last weekend (27th) Put the boat in at Parsley Boat ramp and headed straight to Juno Point. It was about 1am and quite a few other boats were doing the same but, the others headed for Flint & Steel straight up. I have herd alot about these spots.

Well I'm not sure if my bait was wrong or my rig??? had no luck at all. Later in the day at F&S I got a small Hammer head. I stayed on the river untill late the next day and only managed some good 40cm and 50 cm flathead near wobby on the drift. :1fishing1:

Also I herd that there is a guy not far from the Parsley Boat ramp that sells fresh bait ? and he is the guy to see if you dont catch your own?? rather than the frozen type... I am hope to be heading down again in a few weeks and hope to have a better go then.. So any advice to rig's and bait please

Everyone that was comming in all had jewfish, most were caught outside but, quite a few were in the same spot I was in.. Overall i had a good day but would love to catch something with a bit of size...

    untill then good fishing

    yarra
