  1. Hi Big Banana, I have got a really nice set up of overheads and baitcasters that have performed flawlessly over the years. The only 2 spinning reels I own are for light soft plastics. I wanted a spinning reel for casting poppers, light jigging and dropping an unwaited cube out the back. I thought that for my usage and knowing how much other gear I already have that is more than capable - the lesser outlay would suffice. I just bought the Okuma V series 80 and I am putting it on a 10kg 7" Daiwa monster mesh. I think it is the light medium model. This is an outfit with braid for $600 and I reckon it will do ok. I will let you know how it goes, surely someone else will have some real info on these reels. If anybody has actually had some real use of these reels I would also be interested to find out what they think? I love catching kings on little baitcasters so this will be a test if I go down the spinning path, lets see. Cheers, Josh
  2. Great Day, Great Session, Great Boat. Enjoy many more!!!!! The boat looks sensationally set up from Day One. Cheers, Josh
  3. G'Day Matty, Both myself and my "deckie" FishyPete use Charter specials as well an an array of other fine tools. They are a great work horse for the money and are no fuss. If you put braid on it, I suggest 30lb and use some backing if you don't want to go the braid all the way. The reel will hold 550 yards of 30lb braid and if you use backing buy at least 300m of braid as the reel is a good all rounder and it will hold a decent fish if you are lucky (with 300m you can have a real crack). Set up the lever drag to your liking and you are away. Make sure the rod can handle it and you have a great inexpensive Kingy set up. Cheers Josh

  10. How come everything associated with Boating / Fishing ends up hurting our wallets? A Vacuum Pack is a sensible idea - Thanks for the advice. Cheers, Josh
  11. Hi Guys, I have recently purchased a new boat with the intention off now heading offshore every now and then. In the past I have only ever taken just enough fish for dinner that night and release everything else. As heading outside opens up some more potential species etc, I was wondering does any body know of a good book, that lists species + table quality + whether flesh can be frozen etc. I plan still to only keep what I require for the immediate use, but if i get lucky - I don't want to throw back something that I regret and conversely I don't want to keep something and then waste it. I pick up my new boat on Friday and anticipation is a wonderful thing. Cheers Josh P.S I hope this is the correct section to add this topic.

  21. Great report mate, Even better that i saw some of it take place - well done it definately looked all smiles from this end. Cheers Josh
  22. Thanks Guys, I had no idea about the parasites????? The plan was to only keep the fish in the net for a short time then go back and get ice etc. It just was not to be. I reckon my "ski locker" is a perfect built in underfloor fish storing device. Filled with ice and the hole plugged up temporarily it should hold at least 4 good kings - here's hoping. This is all sealed and can be hosed out later. Cheers, Josh Mate from what I am aware - you should have trained him better. In all fairness he has not let me down yet - but i may as well blame him for losing the fish
  23. G'Day Raiders, I have been veiwing these forums for a couple of months now - envious of all the quality fish being caught. I recently joined up and was waiting for THAT Perfect fish to be my first Post!! I purchased a boat a couple of months back and have been fishing the hawksberry and cowan creek quite regularly with some good results - but it has been a long time goal to catch something that will put a real bend in the rod. Saturday morning I was on the water at 6:00am with a fellow raider (fishy pete) who has been an inspiration for my fishing - but has cost me a fortune in new gear purchases so that i can keep up with his experience. We proceeded to the infamous SPOT X and threw my first line in the water and first line ever in the harbour. After an hour or so - There it was the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I had been hearing so much about, i was dissapointed it was not on my own new $600 outfit but none the less i was onto a decent fish. After a freight train of a fight compared to my usual bream, flatties and tailor i was holding my first king - he went 65cm and i was thinking how proud i would be coming home with dinner this time, but before i could process what was happening the second rod buckled and i was onto it. My poor deckie did not get a look in as he was busy subjuing King #1. The second fish fought harder than the first but only went 62cm. I must admit it was hard throwing him back - but i did. I will post a pick of my boat as it is not the first choice in a King hunting vessel - its funny i went out to buy a big tinnie to really get amongst it but made the mistake of taking with me. Ended up with a compromise but hey i can make any boat fish - its amazing the quality of some of the REMOVABLE gear available these days, and I don't mind cleaning up!!! As with the compromise i do not have room for a decent esky / kill box but i was gloating that I had purchased a $3 esky - it is a green keeper net. No drama's King #1 was in the net and tied to the boat. P.S. if anyone picked up a nice 65cm King floating near SPOT X you owe me a beer. Moral of the story never gloat and learn how to do a really good half hitch. By the way i witnessed little slinky screaming how happy she was to catch a king - GREAT to see. I will be on the harbour most weekends now and this time i will have a camera ready and a better fish storing device. Come say G'Day Cheers, Josh
