I thought the Max 40 hp on the 520 was a little odd. But the 520 is 116kg lighter by the looks of it.

Hi mate- Had a quick google search & looks like the 520Dory is actually rated to max 60hp.... (I've got a 40hp on a 420Dory, it goes great but I think it would be well underpowered for a 520!)

Thanks mate, yeah sure is beautiful down here. I've moved the family down for work and they love it as well luckily.

Thats ok, its hard, especially not knowing anybody yet to show you around and where's the best places to go and what to use.

Sounds good! Be more than happy to meet up for a throw. I'm getting a boat in the next week or two as well so if you know any good reefs or where the fads are we could check them out as well. If not just try our luck somewhere lol.

    Cheers mate, Mitch

    Sounds like a plan mate.

I've been out of Port Kembla (in my bro inlaw's boat) few times, not to the FAD yet tho (i think they remove them for winter time?)... I seen a fair few reports of decent snapper being caught off Bellambi in the past few weeks.

Also, I've got a tinny which could take out in lake illawarra when it gets warmer to chase flathead on SP's if your interested...

    Hi all,

New to this site, just wondering is anybody on here from the Wollongong area? I'm just after some local knowledge and if anybody is keen to show me some tips or show me around would be awesome. We have just moved here and haven't done a lot of saltwater fishing as we've come from the country so only really know trolling for trout and spin fishing in rivers.

Looking at buying a boat soon as well so same dilemma, don't know much at all about ocean fishing from a boat so if there are any guides on here that would be much appreciated when I get the boat.

Will pay for your services and help.

Thanks guys and gal's, hopefully catching something with you soon.

Hi Mate; welcome to the Illawarra, beautiful part of the world hey!.... I'm in Woonona as well, moved here 2-3yrs ago from Sydney's northern beaches (still work in Sydney though).

I cant help you too much with local fishing knowledge as i'm still sussing the place out, I mostly fish SP's and had varied success land based in the area, still trying to crack the code! Happy to catch up for a fish when the weather warms up...

    Cheers, Alex.

  4. Interesting read/great rant!.. I definitely can relate!

I used to live in apartment in Northern Beaches and was lucky enough to park my boat on street in front of my parents house nearby for years, however it always annoyed me when i came home from fishing and someone had taken the parking spot or there was a car parked in front making it impossible to get my boat in/out!......Love owning a boat but storage has always a problem.

Made the move out of Sydney recently (South Coast) and now have my boat parked in driveway (along with room for 2x cars)... happy days!

  5. Awesome report mate!... How big a boat do you "need" to safely get out to these FADs? ... i'm thinking of upgrading my tinny (soon) to be able to get into some more offshore stuff.....

    Thank you Kingie Chaser.

Any idea on braid and leader for chasing flathead and bream?

Ive heard flathead are an easier first target for the soft plastics so my intention is to chase them first and then move on to bream when I have gained some knowledge.

I have been tossing up between 4lb and 6lb braid but wholly dooly is there so many brands... 😟

I would go 6lb braid (over 4lb) to start... 4lb begins to get really thin and i find it's more prone to wind knots if not careful.... we've caught small bream through to 75cm+ flatties on 6lb with no issues.  Leader we generally use 8lb but change up 10lb/down6lb depending on area being fished.

    Hi,

Ring Dinga Fishing at Sandgate. He will look after you with an Electric motor. Tell him you are a Fishraider member. Dinga delivers for free Australia wide.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the reminder about Dinga!... I ordered a new electric from them today and got the Fishraider discount 🙂

Ive been looking to buy an electric motor. They come in alot of sizes. I think the smallest is 55lb thrust. Would this suit a 4.20 tinny ?

    Thanks

    Joel

55lb thrust will be fine on a 4.2 tinny - I've got a 54lb JW Watersnake on my 4.2 Dory and it goes fine (will replace it with a Minn Kota when it dies!)... I'm pretty sure any larger motor would need a 2nd battery, I run a 100AH and its pretty heavy on its own....

  9. Nice work! Good to see a successful report from Lake Illawarra! I've just moved to the area & will hopefully be doing a bit more fishing there!.... We had a morning session 2wks ago and scored about a dozen flatties (to 53cm)... I don't know much about the lake but given it's size & decent flow, it '"should" hold some decent fish right?

  10. I agree with above (i.e. steer away from anything euro in this price range);

I'd suggest a Mazda3.... $6k(ish) should get you into a 2004-2006 2.0L model, if you save a bit more say $7-8k(ish) it could get you into the sportier SP23 with bigger 2.3L engine.... This would be much "cooler" than a Corolla!

  11. I've been using a (M-100) C-Tek charger for my 100Ah battery for years and it's done a great job.....

PS> You might want to research battery sizes as 100Ah seems overkill for only finder & lights, especially when space is premium in a 4m tinny!

  12. Just traded my MY12 Forester (Turbo) for under $25k... Used it to tow my 4.2m tinny as well as box trailer with no probs, was the most practical car I've owned!!

  13. From Port Stephens, it's not far to access the northern end of Stockton Beach.... Taken my Subaru Forester out there a few times with no problems... It's a fairly level access onto the beach from this end.

  14. That's a sweet setup mate!

What are your thoughts on the Ranger?? Did you test drive other utes?.... I'm looking for a new dual cab ute and hoping to take the Ford for a test drive this week.... (Will be looking at Hilux SR5, D-Max or the Ranger)

  15. I paid my boat rego (over the phone) last October & haven't still haven't received the sticker.... Come to think of it, I received last year's sticker a couple months late as well.....
