  1. Hi All This summer I really want to get out there and get into the kingies. In fact I am determined to get one over 85cm this year. To that end I am currently looking at downriggers for my 4.5m runabout and just would like to get you guys opinions on what I should be shopping for. Basically I am looking for something that I can use alone out on the water that is relatively foolproof to use. Generally I will be fishing alone so I guess I am asking if I need motorised one or will a manual do the job. I generally only fish within Sydney harbour unless it is really calm and then I might poke my head out the heads or launch off Longreaf if I have a buddy with me. So what do you guys in the downrigging community suggest? Cheers Brocky
  2. Hey All Again Just thought I would shared another post from about two months ago. Get to travel round Australia quite a bit for work these days and I always drag along a rod jsut in case. Anyhow was up the top end a couple of months age doing some digital TV work at a place called Kunnunurra and man if you can make it up there for the fishing its worth it. Anyhow hooked up with one of the locals and he took me out for the day for my first ever Barra fishing trip. Will be headin back after the wet I can tell ya. This is my first ever Barra and boy was I stoked. He measured 84cm and fought like a demon. I dragged him onto the boat and was lookin forward to dinner already when I was informed that 80cm is the limit in WA. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well next time. Back he went
  3. Hey All Havn't made a post for a long time now so I thought it was time to get off &%# and make an effort. Anyhow spent about 3 hours Friday down in Narra Lakes trying to catch some poddies for Saturday. Little buggers never cooperate when you want them too. Caught about a hundred little Bream though. Ha. Anyhow ended up with about 8 after three hours of fighting pelicans, ducks and bream . Into the bait tank for the morning. Up at about 5am next mornin after packin the car and puttin the Yak on the roof myself and down to Long Reef Golf course. So dropped the Yak on my foot gettin it off the roof OUCH. Into the water. There were about 6 other Kayaks out there with me but I soon was on the reef offsure. Perfect conditions. And this was where all the trouble gettin the poddies last night paid off! Snapper. Didnt he hit hard. Anyhow caught about ten more but none quite the first ones size so let em go. Oh and by the by he was delicious!
  4. Hi Raiders I recently purchased a REMCO 12V 70AH 20HR battery for my new electric trolling motor. I purchased it from a fellow raider but unfortunately it didnt come with any instructions. There is a catelogue on the internet but it reads like chinese unfortunately and I just cant work out what kind of charger I needed to buy to be able to charge the battery properly. I have heard that its not just a simple ***** charger that I need. The battery is new so if anyone out there can help on this it would be much appreciated. Cheers all
  5. Yup Heading out tommorrow. Hawksebury for some blackies in the afternooon and then I might join the rest of you into the evening for some of those elusive Hairtail. I think someone needs to come up with a little flag for us so if we see each other we know and can say hello. Just poped some new braid on hopin it gets a workout tommorrow. Good luck.
  6. Hi there Raiders Had to get out of Sydney on the weekend so hitched up the ol boat to the car and headed for Dads place up at Swansea. Had a good sleep in on Saturday and hit the lake at about 10am for a session. Well the lake isn’t fishing all that well at the moment. Headed over to Myuna Bay and sat out in the warm water coming out of the power station. Not much happening there. Then around the lake we proceeded to zoom. Zilch. Even hard to get a few bites for long stretches. Oh well of to the pub about 4. Caught a few there. Ha. Decided to head out on Sunday. Left round 6am and puttered around the point to Blacksmiths beach and proceeded to loose about $50 of tackle on the reef in front of the surf club. Stuff that! Lets head on down to Caves beach and give that a go. Encountered the fleet chasing the Salmon on the way but we didn’t have the gear. They looked like they were having a ball and the water was boiling with them. I swear you could have walked on them at times Saw numberous hookups. Was slappin myself for not packing all the gear in the boat. Anyhow continued down to caves and sat about 1 Km offshore for about 5 minutes before we were on. Giant Slimey Mackerals for about an hour and a half. Good fun. Took home about 30 all about the 40cm size. Salted them up for next time. Headed back in for a go on the sand flats for some Lizards. Was getting desperate now for a fish that I could actually eat. Alas Zilch again. The lake is very quiet at the moment. Even the locals cant find the fish. Well to top it all off while I fished the lake, dad was cleaning up the Slimeys. Opps over goes his fishing knife with the blooded water. Damb. Lots a swearing etc etc etc. Wheres your knife boy. I hand it over. 5 minutes later, over goes that knife again with the blooded water. Geepers Dad whats got into you. Senility has set in I think! Anyhow it was a great day to be out on the water again but unless your prepared to head out a bit up at Lake Macquarie be prepared for a quiet day fish wise. Oh n if you need any help throwing gear overboard PM me, my Dad is available pretty much anytime.
  7. Hi There I was just wondering if anybody out there could provide some advice on what kind of fishfinder would be best to purchase for mainly closed water fishing round Sydney. The old finder that came with the boat is seriusly outdated and intermittent at best. Really needs an upgrade. I have been hunting around and have about $500 to spend. The Furuno LS4100 seems the best to me so far. I would go for the Eagle 500C but they dont seem to sell them in Australia. Anyhow I was wondering what other experiences you guys have had in this range of finder. Any advice would be welcome. Cheers
  8. Hi All Thinking seriously of purchasing a little savage runabout. It has a 35 HP Johnson on the the back (1980) model. Can any of you suggest a decent mechanic that would be able to give the engine a once over so that I dont purchase a lemon straight off. The engine seems good but I just dont have the experience to make a valued decision at this stage of my boating career. I live in Narrabeen Sydney and the boat is currently at East Hills. Cheers
  9. Hey Raiders Great day on the Hawksbury wasnt it. Just great. Not as much luck out there today as the others but hey just bobbin out on the water all day was tops. Started out at 7am with the thought to land a few small squidys and the head out a bit further and try for somthing a little bigger. Didnt turn out that way in the end but did catch dinner. Just trolling about the place and bam my one and only squid for the day. Big bugger too and didnt he taste good just now with a couple a beers. Oh caught a few bream as well, but threw em back.
  10. Hi there fellow fishers Picked up my first boat the other day and took it out for its first run on the weekend. Its a little 11 foot tinny and a 7.5 H motor. Hey its a start. Had a lovely day on Saturday, mainly just running all over the place. Went from Akuna Bay (home base) all the way round to Berowa Point. Took most of the day but was taking it easy. Did a few hours fishing at various places to no avail however. Was using prawns and nippers with a ganged pilly out on the off chance of a Tailor. No luck however. Sunday started off beautiful but didnt it turn nasy there for a bit. Lots of bailing going on in the tinny after that down pour The girl got soaked too so that ended Sunday for me. Anyhow a few tiny bites on the turn of the tide at 9am and one small whiting but that was it. I guess what I am asking if anyone out there might like to provide a little mentoring. I know how to fish but I dont know what I should be targeting and where and with what. The little tinny will get out to about Patonga when the seas are not too big but I wouldnt be willing to take it out past there I think. Everyone talks about Yakkas here as great bait. What do I need to catch them and where is best? Ok and then what do I do with them when I have them? (ie? gang hook them etc?) Never fished with live squid either so where and how do I hook them up (eg. Through the tail with a size ten hook etc). Anyhow any advice would be great and so welcome. The partner is still interested in fishing but to keep that interest we will have to be catching something soon I think. If the partner looses interest I will only be able to get out every second weekend or so instead of most every weekend. Cheers Trev
