  1. Striped marlin . Shape of fin
  2. I was fishing on reel diamond we drove past u guys serval times whilst u were hooked up and were going past at that time of u guys just loosing the fish . Spewing ! We marked some really really big fish definitely over 100 kgs keep in mind one of the long liners caught a 167 kg dressed so aprox 185 kg fish . That's one hell of a fish so there are some huge tuna out there ATM
  3. 5 m boat is doable if the weather stays under 5/8 knots especially anything from the west . If it picks up over 15 knots it will take u at least 2 hours min to get back . If u get a unexpected westerly blowing over 20 to 25 knots which happens quite often and things will get really ugly for you over 30 knots and you can probably be expecting to call marine resue. Or worse !!Remember tuna fishing is not like marlin fishing where most of ur time is spent just inside the shelf , you go to browns then often keep going ! I Have fished browns in a 5 m boat but am much more comfortable in a 6.5 m and up boat .
  4. Nice fish short length of a 2.3 striped is approx 80kg
  5. Well done on ur fish , wouldn't it been easier to launch from little beach ? Closer to salamander bay and definitely safer.
  6. hi guys i am looking at upgrading my 4wd and i am tossing up between a Land cruiser, jeep grand Cherokee and a Mazda bt 50(all diesel) . i have a budget of $30 to $35k and i will be towing about 2100kg to 2250kg BMT. most cruisers that i have looked at within my budget have around 100,000 ks on the clock, jeeps between 50,000 and 80,000 and i can get a new mazda for that price. any feedback would be appreciated. cheers sleepy
  7. heading out in the morning ..what depth were you in when you hooked up ? cheers sleepy
  8. fished tue. trolled wide of browns then cubed on browns ....nothing... no temp breaks little bait .
  9. you will get better hookup if you don t use the bait runner free spool. just fish it in gear as you normally would .
  10. went out to browns wed and found a school of big tuna working quickly we chased them east of browns for ten km only managing to get one strike where unfortunatley the metal loop on the top of the halco trembler cut through the 150 lb trace on strike. the fish ended up going deep so we laid a cube trail but no joy. on the way in we went past a game boat that was hooked up with gaffs out but as the weather was getting worse we decided to keep going. we ended up having a very average ride back in. third tuna trip in as many weeks. hope to get on soon . has anyone else had any success latley ?
  11. hi mate i have two 30s and both of these are spooled with braid then top shotted with mono. i use 65 lb whiplash on one and 50lb tuff line on the other. both of these reels hold between 900 to 1000 m. these reels are really compfortable to fish with and i would much prefer to fish with these than the 50s anyday . i topshot both the reels with about 200m of 50lb mono. its probably better to use the 65 lb braid as it offers you a little more forgivness on the braid to mono knot. i lost a big black the first time the braid left the spool due to what i thought was a good knot. i fish with mick alot and he has shown me a knot which i have 100% faith in now. for what you intend to do the 30s are perfect especially if you are cubing . i picked up my mates 50w to have a cube with it a couple of days ago and put it straight back down after the first drift . i changed my top shot on both of my reels three times in the last 5 months and it doesn t cost much to do so. i hope this helps .
  12. heading over oct 20 th app been a slow start to the season with fish turning up then disapearing ...can t wait either ..
  13. hi all i am trying to organise sailfishing trip to kuala rompin, malaysia in oct this year has anyone been over there. it seems as most of the guides favour drifting with live baits near fads. i am more intereted in switch baiting can anyone reccomend a guide who might accomodate switching. cheers sleepy
  14. hey guys i am looking to upgrade my shimano backbone rods however i didn't quite want to spend $450 on the t curve and the penns are simalar priced. does manyone have any suggestions ? i am looking to spend between $200 and $350. i am running tld 50 s and tiagra 30 s both with 24kg. the tiagras top shotted over 65lb whiplash. i run 300lb black pete wind ons. i have checked out the melton tackle site and they have quite a few rods. also do you need a rod with wind on guides as my backbone rods handle the wind ons fine. any help would be very appreciated cheers sleepy
  15. hi everyone just wondering if anyone has used a daiwa heartland? if so what do you think ? also is there any difference between the heartland and a sol ( both in 4000) except the colour.. and can anyone recommend anything else i want a certate 4000 but i just can t justify the outlay as i have so many damm reels already. cheers sleepy
  16. Does anyone know where I can purchase an insulated fish bag from? large size - Tuna I have only seen international sites that sell them and would like to find a company in australia that makes them.. cheap!! cheers
  17. mate great report gotta love the rewards of commitment
  18. the last fish we got was absolutly chockers full of pillys i reckon he had almost a block in his guts. he came right up to the back of the boat and i fed out a pilly on 24 with a 80lb trace and he wouldn't touch it. Guy fed out a tiny cube on 15 with a 60lb trace and he hooked up. what trace size were you guys using ? i noticed that you guys were using spin tackle , which means braid. the drift was pretty quick yesterday and braid tends to float more than mono. maybe your baits looked a little unnatural and weren't sinking quicky enough ?... i was pretty sure that you guys would have been getting them too.. heard a 2nd hand report of another boat getting 7 or 8 yesterday as well.
  19. Hey mate, Got an Explorer 575 yeah it was a long wet & windy drive out that day
  20. Yes we were in the cruise craft.. Here are some pictures I promised, unfortunatly they are not from yesterday's session ( forgot camera ) but our last session from 2 weeks ago where I sliced my finger open and ended up with 5 stitches!. 2 x 30-35 kg Yellowfin & a few Albies ..
  21. Guy and I headed out at 11.30 today and due to the short sharp chop and a couple of very wet and windy squals it took us almost 2 hours to get to Browns. We put a couple of lures out from the edge till we got to the mountain without any joy . We then pulled up about 4ks north of browns.... you just gotta love it when it all goes to plan .. just as the boat is slowed down I drop the first cube into the water and out of nowhere a big golden barrel engulfs it! With only one rod rigged to cube Guy allows me captain's rights - 3 strips and i'm on. 25-30kg fin. 20 minutes later we mark a fish on the sounder and seconds later it is up and at the back of the boat..... Guy is on to another same size tuna. By this stage we are just north of browns and a few boats have noticed that Guy is hooked up and 1 joins our cube trail. We see another fish on the sounder and once again we have a tuna feeding in the cube trail at the back of the boat...BUT THEN SOME IDIOT DRIVES THROUGH OUR CUBE TRAIL APPROX 20-30 METERS AWAY FROM US. some people are just plain stupid! 20 mins later we get our 3rd fish that's a little bigger than the other two. We finish off with a tiny Albie of about 2kgs . Just as we are about to head home a whale pops up 20 metres in front of us, at first i called it for a pilot whale but thinking about it now it was too big for a pilot whale. Anyone have any ideas? Heading home in the dark during whale migration is scary - Living by the beach I see whales almost every day and so those last 5ks before you get back to the heads really freak me out .. Has anyone had any close whale encounters ? we had a pleasant run home with the sea and the rising moon behind us . The water temp as we crossed the shelf was 17 degrees and was 17.7 and blue where we caught the fish.
  22. Headed out to Browns on Wednesday at 11am. After hearing lots of bad reports on the radio we decided to stop and start jigging for kingies at the 12 mile, upon pulling up there we watched another boat getting amongst them however we had no such luck. Got to the shelf dropped some lures in then decided to troll to a position North of Browns were our cube trail would be roughly over Browns on sunset.... Then on sunset we started marking some fish on the sounder and got a double hookup unfortunatly losing both fish one to a pulled knot and the other by my cousin not used to overheads go over the button and go straight to red line because it was stuck down. We marked more fish and had crazy Albacore action behind the boat. Got 14 Albaroce up to about 12KG. We hooked one Crazy Albi that jumped out of the water to take a pilchard off the end of the rod tip that was danging above the water. Pulled out the light threadies had some fun till we got smashed by a big Tuna!! Dropped 2 big yakka's out got a double hook up on 35 - 40 fin. To top it off it was now about 6:30 at, dark and my spotties were not working. THen trying to brain spike a tuna with a knife i slipped cutting my little finger which would end up later on geting five stitches. Got on the radio and told anyone who was still out at browns to come and jump on our trail. Had a big cat come and join us before we took off. Water temp was 19.7 and we found no temp breaks from way inside the shelf and didn't mark any bait. Had a really fun afternoon . my cousins second game trip (cause it's way too boring) pics to come
  23. BAFA ? i ll buzz you on tha radio . looks unreal .
