  1. Well, I only just got around to finishing this off in the last couple of days! 🤷‍♂️😂

3 coats of etch primer and 3 of topcoat. I’m happy enough with it even though I didn’t mask up thoroughly and got a bit of overspray. It’ll do! 😎8E2808C2-ECAD-4DFA-82BC-329B02DFDD9C.jpeg.47757e7a68dd5613afb137197ea730d2.jpeg74254180-5512-4E46-B21E-EC88EADCF40A.jpeg.6d86b1e51327be0ba3f05e5ccd390ee7.jpeg52EA27B7-5765-4C5C-8967-BA9D31CE513B.jpeg.cfbe0a6f47db952c2cd22297070efcbc.jpegFE39C799-502F-49D8-AAA5-625594C26676.jpeg.7e61ce9290e5bad6c0f61951563db655.jpegEB8C3B6D-B9D1-4A34-B307-FDCBDC12ED1F.jpeg.d05938b842817f9390ffac789ab184b9.jpeg

  2. Merry Christmas to all fellow Fishraiders! I know I haven’t been around here much lately. There’s been a lot going on, especially over the last few months and culminating in a pretty tough time for our family over the last couple of weeks. Christmas will be a challenging time.

May your Christmas bring you all you want and may your 2023 be your best year yet!

    Tight lines and bent rods!

  3. I have Stacer Outlaw 449 SC with a 60hp ETEC and a 55lb thrust Minn Kota. I use it offshore from Port Stephens and I’ve fished off Sydney, in Botany Bay, Port Hacking and the Hawkesbury and bass fishing in the Nepean. I find it very stable. I reckon a 469 Outlaw would suit your needs to a T. I’d probably go for the maximum recommended HP for that hull and maybe go for a higher thrust Minn Kota to deal with those raging tidal currents up north.

  4. I’m right-handed. Since I was about 12, after reading a lot of Dick Lewers, I have cast single-handed spin rods with my right hand and wound the threadline reel with my left. Double-handed spin rods, Alvey sidecasts and overhead reels, I wind with the right hand. With Alveys and overheads without a level wind (game reels, larger overheads), I need to guide the line on with my left hand, so I wind right handed. With a baitcaster with a pistol grip rod, I cast with my right hand, my thumb naturally drops down to feather the spool and control the line in the cast etc. but I switch hands after the lure hits the water (usually, this is bass fishing and I'm going to let the lure float on the surface for a little while), then I can hold the rod in my left hand, cupping the reel and tensioning the line with my left hand, if needed, as I wind. It’s horses for courses.

  5. Well, just a quick update. We had a wonderful time in Bali! I did not go fishing (so it was normal for me! 😂). In fact, we only went to the beach once, on our first day. We walked from our hotel about 600m to Legian Beach and down towards Kuta to check things out. We sat down for a Bintang and a Sprite and were instantly surrounded by locals offering massages, selling bracelets etc. One strange guy just sat with us with a little case on his lap looking at us and not saying a word. It was a bit weird. It was only when I asked what he had in his case that he started to talk and he said, “Silver jewellery”, that he talked a bit. When I said my skin reacts to metals other than gold, he didn’t say anything more and didn’t even open the case and he continued to sit there, looking at us. He didn’t worry us, though… but my wife got freaked out by the touchy feely ladies wanting to massage us and we finished our drinks and up and left! 😂 Sad, as we wanted to sit and watch the surfers… it was quite a long break. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, we had a wonderful time, ate some amazing Balinese food, saw the barong/Kris dance and the kecak/fire dance I studied back in high school, drank kopi luwak (the “cat poo” coffee) and met some wonderful, amazingly friendly Balinese people. 😎 The closest I got to anything to do with fishing was a trip to the pasar pagi (morning market) where we saw fish for sale and watching some fishing boats heading out to a reef near Uluwatu while we watched the sunset as we waited for the kecak/fire dance at the “monkey” temple. I didn’t actually find any leads on a charter that I thought would suit me - they all seemed to be traditional fishing boats targeting fish for a feed. Still, there will be other trips, for sure… I expect to return to Bali many more times! When I get a chance, I’ll put some pics up in The Bar - I’ve just got to get them down to a smaller size.

    Bali bagus!

PS. The 3 of us caught Covid-19 for the 2nd time over there. I didn’t even know I had it - thought it was allergies but did a negative RATest to be sure. My wife and son felt sick on the day we got home and we all tested positive, me only faintly, so I guess I passed it into them. 🤷‍♂️ We thought Ben and Yolanda had a case of Bali belly… on the last day, we went to the Hard Rock Cafe in Kuta - they had sliders and burgers and soft drinks (with ice for the first time). I had Balinese food and Bintang. (I only ate Balinese food - all the time). They got the runs, not me but the GP said it was probably Covid symptoms. Ben also had really bad pins and needles/numbness in his hands for at least 3 weeks. Very strange. We’ve been back 5 weeks now. Looking forward to our next trip but it looks like we’re going to Thailand first.

Baz. Up to you mate, if you want a show room finish strip bare and sand smooth, if you want it to look good and be protected from the salt water you could just work on the parts that are infected. just remember a finished job is only as good as the preparation and the finer the prep the better the finish.

If you do end up using paint stripper be sure you wash all the remnants off thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry. One tiny droplet of water will see you repeating the whole process.

    Show us the finished product.

    Frank

Thanks Frank. Yeah, I was tempted to just sand the peeling areas, leaving the good paint and use putty spray on the bare areas but I think it will annoy me down track if I don’t strip it right back! So, I think I’ll strip it all back to bare metal. I’ll just lightly sand and spray the shaft, though. I’ll post photos when I’m (eventually) done… I don’t rush these things! 😂

A flap disc will grind the surface no matter how fine a disc you use. You want to SAND the surface NOT grind it.

Use wet and dry sand paper (wet ) . start off with 240 grit and then 400 with final sanding with 600 this should be fine enough for a electric motor ( you wont be putting it in any shows to win trophies ) .

you wont need a separate primer the etch PRIMER is sufficient, you can use additional primer if you want to do yet another step in the process..

Grab a tack cloth IF bunnings sell them ? You would know better than me on this.. You can use acetone between coats to ensure dust free finish.

    Frank

    Thanks Frank,

I just started having a look at this today. Should I take all the paint off, or just sand lightly where it’s in good condition? If I take it all off, should I just use paint stripper?… because where the paint is good, it doesn’t come off very easily. 🤷‍♂️

A wire brush or wheel should be stainless steel and not carbon steel for cleaning aluminium. Also it must be clean and not used on any other type of metal.

I didn’t even know it was aluminium… thought it was steel! 🤷‍♂️ I was going to use a flap disc anyway. They’re much gentler.

  9. I generally only use snap swivels on my game fishing outfits to attach prerigged skirts with trace, or when tying on (snapping on?) pre-tied paternoster rigs when drifting for flathead or reef species offshore. Always good quality ball bearing swivels with snaps, e.g. Sampo.

  10. I’ve lost a good deal of paint from my Minn Kota (probably from hitting sand some years back) - photos attached. I want to sand it back and paint it (at least it’s something to do if I can’t go fishing 😂).

Should I buy a special marine paint? Recommendations? TIA

Thanks for all the comments fishos! It was just great to get out there and definitely the fish were a bonus!
    For those interested…….

    I was using a,

    atomic offshore snapper stick 10-25lb

    Okuma ITX 4000 hispeed

    20lb braid and 20lb leader

    TT 1/4 6/0 jig head

    Gulp yakka snack 7 inch.

The other thing we noticed was that the fish were spawning. This will mean they will congregate in numbers around a small patch of reef and be very territorial. Perfect time to nail a few good ones on the inshore reefs

    Good info, Jeff! Thanks. 🙏

I might be a chance for dusting the cobwebs off the gear on Friday (woo hoo!)… haven’t discussed it with the trouble and strife yet. 🤷‍♂️ 😂 Still not sure if my finger will stand up to holding a rod for long after the surgery. Keeping an eye on the weather.

Have a good trip and stay alert. I am sure you are well equipped with first timer info off the facebook groups.

Psst they are not the dates btw .....

Really? I’m sure it’s full moon tomorrow, 14 July and 12 August. 🤷‍♂️ Am I reading the charts wrong? I haven’t sought any fishing charter leads from Facebook at all. I am focusing on eating lots of great Balinese food and absorbing the culture! Terima kasih atas bantuan Anda.

    Not a good move.

The weather is no good for fishing - very windy for next month. The fb people will take your money knowing you won't catch fish. Our contact tells me that there are 2 days in July and 2 days in August that may be promising. Message me if interested and I will give you his details.

Good luck and look forward to fishing reports if you manage to get out.

Thanks Donna. Yes, you told me 1 or 2 days after the full moon. Full moon is 14 July and 12 August, so I’ll miss them, which is why I haven’t been too bothered. I plan to just enjoy the makanan 😋 and explore! 😎

    Hey guys,

I am heading to Bali next week and one of the ideas from the group was to do a fishing charter from Nusa Dua. Has anyone had experience with this and if so, what are your thoughts?

From reviews, it seems the Fishing isn't amazing around Bali but the tour operators themselves have some great photos.

    Happy to hear thoughts

If you’re on Facebook, maybe join the Bali Travel Forum and ask there. Warning though: you’ll get a zillion replies and direct messages from drivers offering their services! Still lots of good info, though.

I’ll be there in 2 weeks, staying in Legian. Haven’t really looked at charters yet. You might get a better shot a few days after the full moon. I’ll have the new moon.

Hope it’s better than the last charter you took Baz from what I hear! Lol 😝

    🍌 🍌🍌🍌🍌

    cheers scratchie!!!

Have you been talking to Dooley? He’s christened me Banana Baz! 😂 I actually managed 2 nice flathead on plastics near the lodge - the best fish of the charter.

I’m still struggling to hold a rod with my casting hand (right) after my surgery. Should be able to manage trolling and holding the rod in my left hand and winding with my right. 🤷‍♂️ Still don’t know if I’m going to get a fishing trip in!

There are a lot of beautiful people there too @Rebel They have had a very hard time during their pandemic. The island runs on tourism. It is nice to see Aussies returning to enjoy the culture and people.

That’s right, Donna! I am SO looking forward to it! We have spent the afternoon watching YouTube videos of the area we are staying. Recent videos showing how it is post Covid - it seems pretty quiet and still a lot of places closed but it looks like it’s picking up. We’re trying to find all the good places to eat - we love Indonesian (and all south East Asian) food and are really looking forward to meeting locals and soaking up the culture. 😎 I can’t believe it but my wife has already said, “Maybe we can look at retiring there, for a few years at least.” 😂

  18. I’m going to Bali in 3 weeks, for 10 days. I’ve done a bit of a search here but couldn’t find much info. Do any Raiders have any info on sportfishing and charters in Bali? I won’t be taking any gear with me, so it will need to be a charter. We’ll be staying in the Legian area. My first trip to Bali/Indonesia, despite studying Indonesian many years ago at high school and I’m really looking forward to it!

Info on charters by PM please.

    TIA.

I just got my spinfisher v but the secondary drag isn't working properly. For some reason no matter how far left of right you turn it, it makes no difference to the secondary drag. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I assume by “secondary drag”, you mean you have the Liveliner version, which works like a Baitrunner (Shimano). If so, it’s not really a drag as such but a spool tension control for when you have it in Liveliner mode… effectively like free spool. Basically you set it with enough tension to hold your bait where you want it but so a fish can swim off with the bait and not feel undue pressure. To strike you’d flick it out of Liveliner mode by flicking the lever or winding the handle… then the regular “main drag” would kick in. If you’re trying it this way and it’s not applying enough tension to, say, hold your bait in the current, return it to your tackle store and get them to look at it. They’re a sealed system, so I wouldn’t be pulling it apart… you could void warranty as CampR indicated.

How much time do you spend rifling through all those trying to make up your mind which one to use - that would do my head in🤣🤣

I hate when the gulp juice gets out - stinking mongrel stuff it is 😷

Not long at all. They’re all sorted by size first, so all the 7 inch, then the 5 inch, then by colour, so I can see what I want straight away. I only have a few colours in each size. Offshore, I rarely fish smaller than 5 inch. I don’t use Gulp because of the leaks and the fact that they dry out and are useless then. I mainly use ZMan Jerk Shads but I do have some Squidgie patterns and some Halco Mad Eyes that a charter operator in WA gave me. Smaller plastics for inshore use on bream and flathead etc. would be in another container and I don’t worry about them offshore. 🤷‍♂️
