  1. Thought we'd hit the area after the storm of the competition boats and headed down monday for a tuesday & wednesday session. Unfortunately due to a food poisoning hickup, the 4am wake up tuesday was followed by a 4.01 cancelling of the trip! When we woke (about 11) we found that it was blowing a gale and that the one other boat we knew of that had gone out didn't get anything, so bed was the good option. Illness still hanging around but the though of having to go back to work thursday looming wednesday had to be the day to go out. Hit the water about 4.45 and headed around to penguin head for the quickest and easiest livey session in history and finally things were looking up. Shot straight out to the banks and got a hit on the first down of the new jig. Knew it was nothing spectacular but was very surprised with the size of the slimey that came up. it was massive. spent about an 3 hours at the banks using livies, cut up slimies, jigs and prawns for a nice 40cm reddie, plenty of sweep and a heap more slimies. With only the reddie to show for our efforts headed out to the block and cheese and found nothing but pesky leather jackets so returned to the banks. Still nothing but throwback crap. No kings to be seen. Very disappointing. Found a school of salmon just off the boat ramp on the way back in going absolutely bizerk on the surface and had a bit of fun throwing SP's at them on the 2kg gear. Only highlight of the 3 days!
  2. at this stage looks like we will probably head down sunday night for a fish monday and tuesday. look forward to hearing news from the weekend! fingers crossed there is some good action! Gav
  3. Hi guys, Heading down JB for a couple of days next week and just wondering if there is anything worth reporting around the area at the moment. Hoping to get out to the banks or the block and cheese for some kings, but haven't heard alot coming out of there at the moment. Cheers!
  4. I have recently taken the el' cheapo approach and made my own. It was realatively easy to do and seems to work pretty well. I just welded a peice of metal tubing to an arm and attached a pulley wheel to the end and one of my old alvy reels at the base. I then purchased a good quality bomb and a release clip. The line i used was just purchased from the hard ware and i spent an hour or so marking out the lengths on it. Still yet to get a fish on it but according to the sounder it seems to be doing its job! total cost was only $70.
  5. Awesome news and well done! What temp was the water out at the banks?
  6. ahhh my mistake.... i don't know why i thought it was last weekend... geeze 100kg, now that is some nice fish! where have they been getting them? i'm guessing that means that the warm currents have finally hit. we were down there 2 weekends ago and the water was a very brisk 15-16 degrees...
  7. Any news out of the JB competition last weekend?
  8. Hi guys, Had the week off work last week and ventured down to JB for the first time in my mates boat. Hit the water about 930pm sunday night and we were greeted by a howling NE which made life very difficult! Headed round to Longnose and found a bit of shelter, but as expected no fish. About 1am decided to pull the pin and catch a bit of shut eye. Now let me tell you, we weren't expecting it too be so damn cold and 3 blokes huddled into a half cab isn't the world's most comfortable place to sleep. 5am we rise, pick up a good haul of good sized yakkas and prepare ourselves for our journey out to the banks. But much the same as the night before, the wind had different ideas. About a quarter of the way out decided it was too dicey and turned around. Found a good swarm of birds going beserk just outside the heads so we proceeded to follow them aimlessly for the next 3 hours to no avail! Got sick of that and headed in to have a go around the tubes. and you guessed it, still nothing! After almost 18 hours on the water with not so much as a run we decided to cut our loses and take off. Gave Ulladulla a try the next day. Headed out to the kingie grounds and once again the weather had other ideas. Possibly the worst conditions that I have ever been out in. We lasted about an hour and a half before the guts started skirming and headed back in. With our week of fishing looking more like a week of drinking we managed to save some pride and got a nice catch of salmon from the rocks off the back of crampton island at lake tabourie using the fresh prawns we had caught the night before in a drunken stupor! biggest salmon was just on 80cm and was great fun from the rocks. Had one last crack at JB on our way back to sydney friday but once again the NE had us pushing the proverbial up hill. Managed to atleast get to Drum & Drumsticks but again had nothing to offer! 2 positives to come out of the trip were the amount of marine life seen (the waters were alive with everything but fish!!!!), honestly reckon we saw about 15 whales and couldn't even begin to count the seals and of course the fact that we weren't at work! I'd be happy to hear if any raiders had more luck down that way last week or if everyone had the same problem! heres hoping JB is a bit more welcoming of us next time around!
  9. We always seem to get a good production of yakka's in yarra bay (i think that is its official name). Anchor about 25-30m off the shore infront of the cemetary just over one of the weed patches, burley up and you should have them round in no time.
  10. Excellent! Thanks guys! I'll be sure to let you know how we end up! hopefully we can pick something up worth photographing!
  11. Hi guys, Heading down to JB for the first time in 2 weeks time. We have our game plan set out and can't wait to put it into play! only problem is we are not sure where the best spot to pick up some livies is in the bay. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!
  12. I hear you guys talking about "the block and cheese" but yet I can't for the life of me see where it is located. I was just wondering if anyone might be able to give me it's location in relation to say, "the banks", in terms of kilometers. Is it further off than "the banks"? Also what are the features of the bottom out there? Thanks guys!
  13. not bad! i'll be quite happy with some of that action!
  14. Just wondering if anyone went out on the bay this weekend and if so if they brought in anything decent!
  15. only a week into it and loving it already! haha... it certainly makes the long work days go alot quicker! makes me anxious to get out on the water though i must say!
  16. Excellent! I was doing a bit of reading and thought that "the banks" sounded like a nice option. But I must say I do like the sound of "monster kings" and drum and drum sticks. Might mean we have to spend a couple of days out there to make sure we cover all avenues! Thanks heaps for your help! If we bring in some nice fish I definitely owe you a beverage or two!
  17. G'Day mate. ANother good option for some land based fishing is Tabourie Island. It's about 10-15mins south of Ulladulla. Head into the Lake Tabourie Tourist Park and park down at the beach and you can't miss it. Once you get onto the island (you can walk out there at low tide) head around the northern side of the island and walk right around to the south eastern corner (you have to walk around that way because if you walk the other side you have to climb a cliff). There is some nice action to be had off the cliff there. There is a nice hole and it gets some good backwash. Its a really safe spot to base yourself coz you are up nice and high and away from the swell. Pick your day because it can get very windy around there. I have found the best method is too use live bait (if you're feeling lazy its easy to pick up some nice sized mullet in the lake at the caravan park) with a float and 2-3m of leader. We have caught all sorts of things out there, from good sized salmon, small kings, nice bream through to tuna (once). Caught a big bull ray out there one day and let me tell you, that was some fun off the rocks! At worst I garuntee you will get a greeting from the local dolphin pod that tend to hang around between the island and dum dum's reef that lies to the south of the island. Failing the island there is some good beach fishing to be had off tabourie beach. We have had catches of salmon, whiting, jews and flathead. Hope that helps and good luck! Make sure you let us know how you go!
  18. Thanks for the warm welcome! Much appreciated! I'm actually pretty embarrassed to admit that I live all of 2 hours away from Jervis Bay and have never wet a line in it's waters. Normally head further down to kiola. We are pretty much willing to try anything provided we get something! hahaha Hoping to target the sportier species like the kings, but beggers can't be choosers... Pretty comfortable heading outside. We quite often hit the FAD's up around Botany Bay and Port Kembla and we are pretty comfortable getting out amongst it. Any help, and I mean any help will be great! Thanks heaps!
  19. Hey guys, New to this forum and I'm finding that I can't stop reading... Don't tell the boss! A mate and I are looking to christen his new Barcrusher with a trip down to Jervis Bay mid October. We have never actually fished Jervis Bay before and we are looking for a few tips on what we might expect and where our best bet for a decent fish might be. Dreaming of a big king on a livie and from what I hear this is a good bet as long as we are able to hit the right spots... That's where I need a little help. Cheers!
