  1. Hi,

Will be driving the family down for a short holiday to Melbourne (from Sydney) in late May.

As I have a young child, we're going to break the journey half way. So I was thinking I can put in a session of trout fishing :1prop:

Can anyone recommend a place to stop, which is not too far off the Syd-Melb route via Hume Hwy ?

Is Tumut a good spot to stop and fish for some trout?

I have never driven to Melbourne and have not been to any of these areas. Also if you know of any cheap/decent accomodation, do recommend it to me.

    Thanks in advance

    Koons

  2. I was fishing the north bank (from the wall) of the entrance from the beach back towards the road.

Great to meet you and yep I had a great time in Syd. Hope I can fulfill your wish for trout pics too.

    Cheers

    Col.

    Hi Col,

Great to see you had some decent fishing here in Sydney. I'm back from the 1 week family holiday to Tassie. Sorry couldn't catch up with you as we only had 1 car and limited time for me to fish. Only managed a 25cm brown trout at Gunns Plains. Had a few short sessions in the early mornings or evo but not much luck with the trout.

Had 1 day at Great Lakes but in the evo the wind was blowing like crazy but i still went out. Was planning an early morning session but woke up to find it snowing !!

Well, it was a good experience for the family to have seen and experience the snow.

So no luck at the central highlands.

The scenery was spectacular. hope to be back there again soon.

    Koons.

  3. I will be heading to Tasmania for the first time in Oct. Am planning to do some trout fishing with my softplastics. Will be staying in Hobart and Devonport. Most of the time in Devonport.

Can anyone point me to a lake or river near Devonport to fish? Also is it trout season then?

Any help will be much appreciated.

    thanks

  4. good on ya Ash,

Gotta be good when you put your son onto a couple of nice fish  .

    cheers

Good on ya Ash.... but do be careful not to eat too many fish from the Parra river esp for children, with the dioxins etc.....

  5. thanks all.

Fresh trout, pan fried with a little garlic butter, and freshly squeezed lemon is excellent.

The scenery there is awesome and just so peaceful when tracking up the river and fishing all by yourself.

  6. Went to the South Island, NZ for a short holiday with the family and 2 friends.

3 days passed and doing all the family stuff. Itching to try my hand at trout fishing.

4th day is my day, after taking care of the little one the day before while my wife and 2 friends went for a track up Mount Aspiring, it was my turn to go fishing.

Headed to the river near Wanaka, brought my spinning outfit as i have never fly fished before. The river was awesome with scenic views, water clear as can be.

After 1 hour, first hook up ..... "yeah, this is it" , before i can even get the line tight, it jumps and throws the lure. :1badmood: Damn.... am thinking i may have missed the best chance i had.

Next hour goes by without any hits, ....and really thinking now that i won't catch anything. Didnt seem to spot any fish swimming around either.....

When further up river, ..... just as i reach this bank, saw something brown move on the right hand side,... Yes, it a trout and its BIG....... with no time wasted, cast out 2m in front of it, ....

3 winds and BANG, it's hooked and this time i waste no time to make sure i have it tight on the line. Takes some drag, then jumps to try to get free.... jumps again .... This is it, make sure it doesnt throw the hook.

It steadies itself in the river, just facing the current .... my drag is not strong enough.....

So tighten the drag in hope it can take this fish and it seem really strong.

He fights back and gives another jump. Got him in near the bank and rocks. Hoping it will not bust off.

Slowly, i reel him in towards me and YES !!! i got my FIRST TROUT and its a Rainbow. :1prop:

With a big smile i can't help but think this had made my holiday!

No other hits for that day. Went back the next morning, .... this time i just threw the lure into the current and let it drift with it. After 1 hour, caught my next 2 trout. 1 Brown trout and 1 rainbow.

Had a ball of a time with them. Had another 2 hookups but lost them. All in all, i was getting hooked on trout fishing and will definately give this a try somewhere in Australia. Can't wait for the next holiday.

  7. Hey Yaulpang,

it was great to see you get your fisrt kingie.....

next time out it will be my turn!!

Also, Yaulpang caught and landed another undersize kingie which went back in. No one else there caught a legal king when we were there.

thanks for a excellent day and for letting me fight the kingie a little too !

  8. Been fishing Iron Cove on soft plastics but have noticed alot of mullet jumping around.

They seem pretty big as well.

Was wondering what type of rig and bait do i use to catch these guys.

i reckon they would be really fun on light line.

  9. Cheers Hazza,

I will be back out there on Sunday for another session. I might grab some gulp worms and give them a rip

    Burnsy

    AHhhh thanks for that Shane...

was wondering how come i never see any bass minnows in the shops.

looks like i already have them in my arsenal then .... :)

  10. The lures of choice from the top ten where all soft-p.

1inch hawks, bass minnow(watermelon),our baits where Gulp worms Not sure of the name.

We when trough 6 packet .Green colours seem to be working good.

    Hazza

I haven't seen any bass minnow in the Berkley range. there are power minnows etc.

are they not made anymore or is BigW and my local tackle shop not selling bass minnows.

  11. Headed to IC near rodds pt yest evo ....

had about 3 "big" hit but missed .... plenty of smaller hits.

caught only 1, just undersized flatty .... which went back in.

Only my 4th time fishing plastics.... still trying to figure out what retrieve to do.

  12. Do you guys think its worth the $$ to go with a guide to try fly fishing?

i haven't even made a cast before. Totally new.

It's pretty ex at around $300 for half day and $500-600 for full day session.

  13. Sharky,

Thanks for the prompt reply mate. Moulineux point was where I fished (not quite at the point but around that general area). Might give it a fair go this weekend rain, hail or shine.

No sluggoes at the moment so gona have to make do.

    -IkanBilis-

    Hi Ikanbilis,

    i've PM you

  14. Hey guys,

i'm heading to Lake Wanaka next month. Got a few questions.

I'm pretty new to soft plastics.

    1) can i use soft plastics for trout? or is a tass devil lure better.

    2) how can i take my 2 piece 7 ft rod to NZ? what's the cheapest way for a case below $30.

    3) does anyone know if there are lots of fish in Lake Wanaka or any good spots arond there?

    thanks raiders

  15. Hi Jay, I fished Narra/Collaroy last week. There were some fairly good gutters to be found. I had a look at North Narra too late last week and there is some good fishable water there too. With today's weather conditions, I reckon North Narra would be worth a shot.

I have found the fishing off the beach very tough so far, so you might find bites few and far between.

    Good luck.

    Spizza

i fished in Narra last friday for a big donut. Couple of small bites but nothing .....

  16. Hey Koons,

Howzit. I fished IC today, from 7am - 10am on a rising tide, high was round 10am. I've found IC fishes best on a high tide and have caught decent fish at this time.

Today I got 3 flatties and a chopper tailor. First of all don't fish Rodd point, I find spots to the west of it produce better fish. Im attaching a pic from 8footugly's post with better spots.

I've fished them and have caught bream and flathead from them. Bream I find are hard to catch but flathead are easier. A violent jerk and keep the sp twitching as you wind in the slack. Remember to keep it bouncing off the bottom.

    Good luck

    ------------------------------------------

    Thanks for that Yaulpang.

i will try again one evening. I did try to bounce off the bottom but keep getting snags on and off.

Maybe at the other spots will be better.

    see you there one day/
