  1. Hi, Will be driving the family down for a short holiday to Melbourne (from Sydney) in late May. As I have a young child, we're going to break the journey half way. So I was thinking I can put in a session of trout fishing Can anyone recommend a place to stop, which is not too far off the Syd-Melb route via Hume Hwy ? Is Tumut a good spot to stop and fish for some trout? I have never driven to Melbourne and have not been to any of these areas. Also if you know of any cheap/decent accomodation, do recommend it to me. Thanks in advance Koons
  2. Yeo there Col, great pics again. Cliffton has been firing for kingies over here.
  3. Nice work there Pekingduck ~~!
  4. Great catch there Col. Pity i didnt have more time in Launceston.
  5. Hi Col, Great to see you had some decent fishing here in Sydney. I'm back from the 1 week family holiday to Tassie. Sorry couldn't catch up with you as we only had 1 car and limited time for me to fish. Only managed a 25cm brown trout at Gunns Plains. Had a few short sessions in the early mornings or evo but not much luck with the trout. Had 1 day at Great Lakes but in the evo the wind was blowing like crazy but i still went out. Was planning an early morning session but woke up to find it snowing !! Well, it was a good experience for the family to have seen and experience the snow. So no luck at the central highlands. The scenery was spectacular. hope to be back there again soon. Koons.
  6. I will be heading to Tasmania for the first time in Oct. Am planning to do some trout fishing with my softplastics. Will be staying in Hobart and Devonport. Most of the time in Devonport. Can anyone point me to a lake or river near Devonport to fish? Also is it trout season then? Any help will be much appreciated. thanks
  7. Good on ya Ash.... but do be careful not to eat too many fish from the Parra river esp for children, with the dioxins etc.....
  8. Nice fish there ! i haven't been to tassie but plan to make a trip sometime this year or next. When does trout season start or can you fish all year? Also, when is the best time to fish trout?
  9. Fish from NZ counted? my first rainbow trout Fish Number 3 .
  10. thanks all. Fresh trout, pan fried with a little garlic butter, and freshly squeezed lemon is excellent. The scenery there is awesome and just so peaceful when tracking up the river and fishing all by yourself.
  11. Went to the South Island, NZ for a short holiday with the family and 2 friends. 3 days passed and doing all the family stuff. Itching to try my hand at trout fishing. 4th day is my day, after taking care of the little one the day before while my wife and 2 friends went for a track up Mount Aspiring, it was my turn to go fishing. Headed to the river near Wanaka, brought my spinning outfit as i have never fly fished before. The river was awesome with scenic views, water clear as can be. After 1 hour, first hook up ..... "yeah, this is it" , before i can even get the line tight, it jumps and throws the lure. Damn.... am thinking i may have missed the best chance i had. Next hour goes by without any hits, ....and really thinking now that i won't catch anything. Didnt seem to spot any fish swimming around either..... When further up river, ..... just as i reach this bank, saw something brown move on the right hand side,... Yes, it a trout and its BIG....... with no time wasted, cast out 2m in front of it, .... 3 winds and BANG, it's hooked and this time i waste no time to make sure i have it tight on the line. Takes some drag, then jumps to try to get free.... jumps again .... This is it, make sure it doesnt throw the hook. It steadies itself in the river, just facing the current .... my drag is not strong enough..... So tighten the drag in hope it can take this fish and it seem really strong. He fights back and gives another jump. Got him in near the bank and rocks. Hoping it will not bust off. Slowly, i reel him in towards me and YES !!! i got my FIRST TROUT and its a Rainbow. With a big smile i can't help but think this had made my holiday! No other hits for that day. Went back the next morning, .... this time i just threw the lure into the current and let it drift with it. After 1 hour, caught my next 2 trout. 1 Brown trout and 1 rainbow. Had a ball of a time with them. Had another 2 hookups but lost them. All in all, i was getting hooked on trout fishing and will definately give this a try somewhere in Australia. Can't wait for the next holiday. EDIT: made it easier on the eyes, crazedfisherdude

    Lake Wanaka

Hey guys, i'm heading to Lake Wanaka next month. Got a few questions. I'm pretty new to soft plastics. 1) can i use soft plastics for trout? or is a tass devil lure better. 2) how can i take my 2 piece 7 ft rod to NZ? what's the cheapest way for a case below $30. 3) does anyone know if there are lots of fish in Lake Wanaka or any good spots arond there? thanks raiders
