Went to the South Island, NZ for a short holiday with the family and 2 friends.
3 days passed and doing all the family stuff. Itching to try my hand at trout fishing.
4th day is my day, after taking care of the little one the day before while my wife and 2 friends went for a track up Mount Aspiring, it was my turn to go fishing.
Headed to the river near Wanaka, brought my spinning outfit as i have never fly fished before. The river was awesome with scenic views, water clear as can be.
After 1 hour, first hook up ..... "yeah, this is it" , before i can even get the line tight, it jumps and throws the lure. Damn.... am thinking i may have missed the best chance i had.
Next hour goes by without any hits, ....and really thinking now that i won't catch anything. Didnt seem to spot any fish swimming around either.....
When further up river, ..... just as i reach this bank, saw something brown move on the right hand side,... Yes, it a trout and its BIG....... with no time wasted, cast out 2m in front of it, ....
3 winds and BANG, it's hooked and this time i waste no time to make sure i have it tight on the line. Takes some drag, then jumps to try to get free.... jumps again .... This is it, make sure it doesnt throw the hook.
It steadies itself in the river, just facing the current .... my drag is not strong enough.....
So tighten the drag in hope it can take this fish and it seem really strong.
He fights back and gives another jump. Got him in near the bank and rocks. Hoping it will not bust off.
Slowly, i reel him in towards me and YES !!! i got my FIRST TROUT and its a Rainbow.
With a big smile i can't help but think this had made my holiday!
No other hits for that day. Went back the next morning, .... this time i just threw the lure into the current and let it drift with it. After 1 hour, caught my next 2 trout. 1 Brown trout and 1 rainbow.
Had a ball of a time with them. Had another 2 hookups but lost them. All in all, i was getting hooked on trout fishing and will definately give this a try somewhere in Australia. Can't wait for the next holiday.
