  2. Gday hammerz,

We head up to lake macquarie once or twice a year for holidays and the fishing can be bloody unreal at times

There a quite a few jewies im the lake as some members have metioned Pullbah island holds a few good jew just look for the deeper holes on the sounder and fish early morning or late afternoon /night ,

Kingys are caught in the lake at times, on our way out at christmas time we saw what we thought were tailor busting up around the channel markers at the entrance to the channel which turned out to be a big school of rats , the swansea bridge is renound for big kingys but catching them is another story as most of the time they'll get to the bridge pillons seconds after hooking up.

Believe it or not a couple of years ago a few Dolphin fish were caught in the lake also :1yikes:

    Fisho5

i also heard of a guy catching a nice cobia in the lake aswell recently, and also heard lots of stories of people chumming up sharks around pullbah island.

  3. hey mate i live about 10 minutes from swansea caravan park, the swansea water way is beautiful along with the lake, cant comment on the fishing for the moment but will be able to next week, but im sure people are catching plenty in the channel and around pullbah island in the lake.

the area around the caravan park is great, ive gone there before and just sat back and relaxed and done some landbased fishing, not that ive caught much landbased there but its still a beautiful place.

the only thing is that swansea channel might get a little crowded during the holidays but if you dont mind that then its all good.

    Cheers

  4. Hey all

All this talk about black fish has made me think about trying it out, But i dont know where to collect weed or fish for them, i dont want to go as far as the entrance, but im close to swansea, or budgewoi or anywhere like that, im actually located in summerland point so closer to that the better. i seen alot of people fishing for them under the bridge at budgewoi but im not sure where they get their weed or cabbage from.

    any help would be awsome.

    Cheers

  5. this rod was supposed to be for fishing in the lake mainly for flathead or bream , i think your right in that its a heavy outfit more suited to outside fishing, my other graphite rods are 2 to 4 kg which is much more suited to what im doing, if any1 one else uses this type of gear and wants to swap me a decent quality graphite rod and eggbeater reel combo in a lighter outfit (2 to 4 kg?) just pm me as i dont want this thing sitting there not getting used.

When i first got my calcutta every cast i did it would bust up, so i just spent a few hours in the back yard with an old lure with the hooks cut off it and just casted it and i put a bucket on the other end of the yard and just kept practising until i had a good rate of getting into the bucket, now i have no probelms using it at all. I think they are harder to use if they are smaller because i have a bigger cheaper baitcaster and i never had no probelm casting with the 25Lb mono.

another tip is to never let your finger off the spool, always lightly keep it on there when casting or it will normally cause you hassle

  6. Hi my grandparent have a holiday house on the water up at Summerland Point too and i have had quite a bit of success on the bream straight off our wharf. I plonk a chair there, like in my profile picture, and havev got bream up to about 35cm. If you have a boat them i would suggest drifting in amounst the boats moored there and throw out a few SP. It hard to use them from the wharf as there is loads of weed on the ground and floating around so hard to tell when something is biting....

Some times the jettys at summerland point can be pretty productive and other times they can produce absolutly nothing lol, but i guess all fishing is like that, either way its still a nice way to spend a day looking over the lake

  7. hi guys long time viewer 2nd time poster. like 2 say this is a great site very imformative and cant keep away from it.

so anyway me and a few mates have booked a house over the easter long weekend on lake macquarie, the house is just south of nords wharf, so basically we are situated on the south eastern end of the lake, we will be taking up a boat with us and will be there for 4 days.

just wanted 2 no if any1 that has fished the area or lives up that way can point us in the right direction for some boat and land based fishing.

we will be using your normal baits and soft plastics. and watever livies we encounter aswell.

    cheers hamerz.

    Hey

I live in Summerland point, so just around the corner from where you are staying im pretty sure and for boat spots swansea channel is a very nice fishing spot, i cant give you to much detail as its been years since ive been in a boat in there but its always pretty productive for fish just be careful in there it can be a dangerous waterway for people who dont know it.

Swansea Channel is also great for landbased in places, the water runs fast there in alot of places so just have a look around and ull find some places to fish.

A nice little place to spend a day is if you drive to swansea and when you get to the big round about out front of maccas turn right and go to the end of that road then left, keep driving down there and youll find a carpark theres a nice rock wall there and a good rock fishing spot just a walk around the point.

If you dont wanna travel to swansea then youll still find plenty of spots in the lake that will be good fishing just by looking at them, maybe try the power station outlet near summerland point aswell ive heard thats good.

If you need any more info about the area let me know and ill tell ya what i can.

    Cheers

  8. Hey raiders...Ive got a week off over the school holidays mainly to spend time with the kids but my brother also has the same week off and we were planning to sneak out for a night to go and fish :1fishing1: Stockton Breakwall. We've heard plenty of good stories from work mates who have fished there but have no idea where to fish as I heard it is is quite a long breakwall or what to target and baits and rigs to use. Any help would be gratefuly appreciated.

I cant give you to many tips because i spent 3 days fishing the breakwall and only caught a small tailor lol thats how hopeless i am, but i did notice at the end of the breakwall it is very snaggy i want using pilchad on gang hooks with a sinker and i was getting snagged all the time :ranting2: so i was thinking maybe a float rig of some sort? or not heavily weighted.

Its quite a long walk so u might want to pack light, i seen alot of the locals there with push bikes set up with all fishing gear and rods etc to ride out to their spots, some even had like trailors on their pushys to carry there tackle.

If you find the right spot and set up out there you will love it  i loved it even when i didnt catch a fish, just watching the massive boats come into port is cool.

    Cheers

  9. Yes you certainly can, the tuna's, bonnies, stripy, etc are probably a better bait though, but for sure tailor would be worth a go..

    Cheers..

ok thats awsome ty, it might not be the best quality bait but it would be alright for me when i just wanna pick up a rod on short notice and have a fish.

    Cheers

P.s do i scale and Gut the fish first before filleting?

  10. I actually hadnt planned on using any kind of airation device. I suppose that i will have a proper one made by Brickman from Stainless Steel and mount it behind the thwart seat at the front. I am hopeless with anything DIY so it could be a lengthy process. I will use the esky until i can sort out somethinng more permanant.

Airator in an esky is easy way to go to start off mate, buy an airator from your local tackle store, one that takes batteries they dont cost much at all and just throw the stone end in the water and let it go and youll be sweet for a few hours until u need to change water.

  11. I normally try to go out early if on the lake, landbased or by boat so the winds normally not to high at the earlier times, In lake maquarie just try different spots, around pullbah island or in coves or anything that might block the wind off on that day and just cross your fingers.

    Cheers

  12. Hey everyone

I was just reading an article in a fishing Mag about shark fishing from the beach responsibly of course and ive never done Game at all so im not familiar with the gear.

what i have gathered from a first look is that im gonna need like 30 or 40lb mono Line, im thinking a 10 - 12ft rod (not sure what rating it should be?) and i read that about a metre or two of wire trace.

is there anything else anyone would suggest for this as i might try this in the future.

Also what kind of gear am i going to need to use wire trace and whats the cheapest way to do it?

    Cheers

  13. Gday mate,

All that black stuff out in front of there is kelp so you'll get squid. As for fishing those rocks I haven't myself but it will be quiet snaggy.

    Cheers,

    Joe

Ok cheers mate, ill try for some squid next time im there for sure.

when i fish shallow areas off the shore, i use no sinkers at all. especially when you use half a pillie, theres quite a bit of weight already

also use your polaroids to see whats around. sometimes there will be bream lurking close to the rocks.

i was thinking of using a float or something like that, i havent been game enough to wonder onto the rocks around the coast and these ones i seen were fairly safe last time i was there so i thought it might be a good start. i might have a look around the coast i know there is alot of other quality rock fishing places, just need a good one to start out on!

    Cheers

  14. Hey all

I was wondering if anyone has ever fished this spot at Swansea before off the rocks (Marked Below), i havent ever done much rock fishing so im not sure if thats a decent spot or not but last time i looked at it when i was walking around there is looked fairly safe to begin with. I was also wondering what type of rigs to use for rock fishing, and do i use Livies and can i catch Livies near the rocks?

The reason i ask about living is that last time i was in swansea all i could catch was those little sweep things for live bait and i dont know if they are to good.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated

  15. Great sunrise Cory, and you caught a fish ... Can't complain about that. A great way to start the day.

By the way, in the picture of the sunrise, is that your mate "Rod" in the foreground? :074:

    :Funny-Post:

haha well after a few hours without fresh water who knows what i might of been talking to or making friends with lol

  16. Big question Troy....

To cut to the chase my main advice is to keep it really simple. If there's a lot of water movement (strong rips, lots of waves) use a paternoster rig with a star or even a grapnell sinker (the ones with prongs that look like an anchor)... this will help hold your rig in place. One dropper above the sinker is enough

If there's less water movement use a running bean or ball sinker above a swivel, with a trace of around 60cm.

To the trace or dropper/s of each rig, attach a hook suitable for the bait you're using and the fish you're after... whiting or bream with worms or pippis... something like a #4 to #1 long shank worm hook. Tailor with Pillies... a gang of 3 or 4 5/0's... etc. Likewise use line, terminals etc to suit your target.

Best baits are the ones you gather yourself locally... pippies, beach worms, crabs are great. Pillies are excellent anywhere including the beach. Strip baits of freshly caught tailor or mullet are worth a go. If you get really serious even livebaiting... but off the beach that requires a more specialised approach so I wouldn't recommend it for a first go at beach fishing.

The other thing you MUST do if you want to catch some fish is to learn how to 'read the beach'... this is simply checking out the beach to work out where the fish are most likely to be. FIsh on a beach tend to congregate in specific areas like gutters, channels, deep holes etc. It's a big topic in itself so grab a fishing book or DVD to get a feel for it.

It's very common to be fishing a nice gutter (a channel of deeper water inside the surf) catching plenty, while watching people on either side on relatively 'barren' bottom catching zip... it's THAT important.

Hope this helps as a starter for a huge topic.

    Cheers, Slinky

That advice is most likely the best you will get, only thing i can add to it is if you can find a high vantage point on the beach to look down at the water then spend anywhere from 10minutes to 30minutes watching the waves and seeing where holes are etc, when you get down on the beach things normally look alot different and ive found can make it harder. Also you will be able to see a gutter by watching a wave if you see the wave to full (or Fat) to break in one area but its breaking in another then your best bet is that the area not breaking is a Hole, Sometimes you may even be fishing a gutter at your feet so you dont always need a cast a mile either. Another way of seeing a gutter is if a wave Breaks and then it reforms and breaks again, inbetween the breaks there is a good chance is a hole or gutter.

    Cheers

  17. when i first started beach fishing i only used pilly on a Gang hook rig and have had great success with that ever since, when i first started and didnt want to spend to much money on it before i seen if i liked it i would buy these Surecatch Gang hook rigs that came in a little packet like wrapped around a circle peice of cardboard in the packet from any Tackle store for about 3 Bucks each, this was cheaper because i didnt have to buy Leader line, because the rig comes with everything you just need to tie it on.

If you want more info then let me know and ill see what i can pull up
