  1. Hi all, I'm going for a squid tonight. Will consider locations between Middle Harbour to Palm Beach. Happy for any tag alongs whether experienced or interested in learning. not that i'm super-pro but normally get some for bait or a feed. BYO jigs. Slabslinger
  2. Nice to have you aboard Jewgal, Nice calamari. That's one thing I have no problem catching. Loads of reading to do. I recommend paying particular attention to tides, moon phases and barometric pressure. While I don't mind fishing til sunrise, it's more effective picking out a likely 2 or 3 hour window where everything is in your favour. From all I've learnt here I've seen an increase in hook ups on what I think are Jew. I'm still yet to get one to the shore though. I fish the Northern Beaches. Normally somewhere between Long Reef and North Narrabeen, also occasionally Middle Harbour landbased if there aren't 146 people at my fav spots. Squid or live yellowtail or live or slab tailor are my weapons of choice. PM me if you want to share a trip to any of these. Cam
  3. Way to go mate!! What species is the spotty looking fish near your dog?
  4. Haha Run cow, Run! He was a scrawny calf, who looked rather woozy. No one suspected he was packing an Uzi!!
  5. No. The car park we are referring to is LR Beach a little bit south of where you are thinking and the golf course. As far as the vandalism goes, I'd say it has it's moments. That area goes through patches where hundreds of kids (13-20 y.o's), and I really literally mean hundreds (bulk text messages/facebook/myspace all have a lot to answer for) pack into the car park area and drink or drug or whatever they do 2 or 3 nights in a week. Cops are hopelessly outnumbered and inflame them more often than not. And then no buses stop to take them away because of their sheer numbers and behaviour so it then becomes entertaining to destroy things. Anyway that's my rant - glad to get that off my chest I live pretty much overlooking that area, so I walk and don't have that issue, but I have on occasion been approached on the beach, generally harmless enough and or off their faces, slight cause for concern on the odd occasion, but nothing serious as yet, touch wood. I'd probably suggest if it 's quiet you're ok, if there is a gathering, then you may have cause for concern, i'd suggest leaving the carpark and parking on the high/northbound side of Pittwater Road and lugging your gear down. Slabslinger Will do Grant. A little bit of tweaking and hopefully I'll be getting into them. Slabslinger
  6. G'day Zenman, Thanks for the reply. I'm almost exclusively at LR. Might see you Thurs/Fri if you are down this way. PM me if you want to say g'day. Sounds like I'm not doing too much wrong. Any tips with my rig? Other than Stewy has already mentioned? Thanks in advance, Slabslinger
  7. Thanks for the advice Stewy. A few things standing out to me there. Yes it is well know as a jewfish haunt. I knew moon was important, just forgot to mention it in my post. Thought it was the full? But no moon better? I do usually use a star sinker but as a runner. Do you suggest using that at the end of my leader? If so do you mean as in a paternoster style rig?
  8. Well after 4 very active months I am still jewless. Plenty of sharks, a few fat tailor. One almighty spooling last trip which was a speeding unstoppable force, I was about to lose the lot til I put some pressure on, it felt like I'd hooked a car then went off like a gun. Possibly jew but more likely a noah methinks, but who knows as I don't know any better, but then again not bitten off just snapped off. Anyway, this is my modus operandii. Does anything stand out as wrong? I fish off the beach with self caught very fresh squid or very fresh or live fish usually yakka about 18-20cm. The squid is normally too large to livebait, so rectangular strips about 15cmx3cm (Is this too small?) are what I normally put out on a single hook 7/0 to 9/0 in varying styles, with a metre or so of leader 20-30lb and a running sinker heavy enough to keep me anchored according to conditions. I've never tried a paternoster rig, would this be better, or only suited to boat or wharf fishing? Sometimes I get not even a touch I think to myself is this because of my rig? If my yakkas are live they are pinned above lateral line just above the curve in the lateral line. If dead I pin them a little lower and half hitch the tail to keep them streamlined. I fish around tide turns, normally high but not always, and I always spend the time to find deeper gutters on the beach to fish, normally with a bait placed around the edges and one right in the middle. I'd hate to work out the hours I've put in, then again I could probably ask the she is persistently questioning my capacity as a fisherman. I try to explain that's Jewfishing. What am I doing wrong? Is there anything here standing out? Do I just go back to another style? Thanks in advance, (A very at wit's end) Slabslinger
  9. Aahhh, those were the days. Lost my job 4 weeks back. So the is back to work and I'm looking after my boys FT. Up at 4 & 5am to start the day with a 9 month & 2 year old doesn't mix well with spur of the moment overnighters. Though I do love hanging on to a rod with eyes propped open with matchsticks til the sun starts to come up and the seagulls start stirring. On the other hand when the boys get a bit older....LOOK OUT, we'll be pulling overnighters left, right and centre Hope you get amongst some bruisers down there. Slabslinger
  10. lol, just not getting it.
  11. Smoking Jew mate. I have been hitting the beach regularly with livies without success. I might have to change tactics and come back inside to 'pop' my jewfish 'cherry'. Slabslinger
  12. Well done on your first. I'm yet to get off the mark but have been hitting the beach hard for several months now with livies, and strategies learnt from fellow Raiders posts, so hopefully not too long, if I can keep the sharks away from my bait. "HAD A SMELL OF HIM TO KNOW WHAT THE FAMOUS JEW SCENT WAS ABOUT" Huh? I've read a lot of Jew posts but I don't recall reading anything about this. What's that about? Also what are the jewels?
  13. Hi all, I am a self confessed SP neville. I have just received a packet of Gulp 5" Blue Pepper Neon Jerk Shads from my Mum In Law. Unfortunately I have very little knowledge on SP's. Can any Raiders help me please on landbased target species and locations, preferably Northern Beaches specific. Thanks very much in advance, Slabslinger
  14. I like it! I like it a lot. I use a cork sanding block available from any hardware, but I think I will be adopting the plastic bag method. Nice work and thanks for sharing Geoff. Slabslinger
  15. So many views...so few replies. I guess it's just not a popular area. Oh well, I'll leave the gear at home. Have a good weekend.
  16. This sounds like something Dr. Karl would like his 5 cents upon. Interesting thread, I will keep my eyes on it, but have no evidence for you. Good Luck
  17. Good advice Dicko and Penguin, thanks for the info.
  18. Hi All, Going to the gong this weekend on a boozy boys weekend. Planning to take a beach rod for if nothing longer an hour or so before dawn each morning. We are staying right at Towradgi Beach. I've never been there before. Does anyone know if you can pull worms there? I plan to pull worms to catch something to fillet and use as big or live baits. If you reckon I'm pushing the proverbial uphill please tell me and perhaps recommend a fresh bait shop/source via PM. Treat me like a dummy, i don't know the area at all. Thanks in advance, Slabslinger
  19. Thanks everyone, I have a few good spots in mind. Just one other thing, do you know if they attack a livie head on or from behind? Slabslinger
  20. I haven't targetted them for years but might have a go when they come on. When do they start appearing? And where are they when they arent on?
  21. Just out of further curiosity...would Kirk be related to Kurt?
  22. Great work mate. Kingy candies...I like that. I'd be using mine as Jew chews. Hope they are the goods either way. All the best, Slabslinger PS Hope your gf doesn't get that clean pink shirt in front of too many inkers. Hate her to learn the hard way that designer tees and squid don't mix unless you are loaded.
  23. G'day Bent, I go by the thinking fresher is always better. If you can ice before you get home too all the better. Preferably don't let them sit in fresh water though. I also dont wash them even in saltwater. I think the ink must give them a bit more attractant. Straight into a ziplock bag and squeeze out as much air as you can, or better still, if you are going to stock up seriously invest in a vacuum sealer. Just in the ziplock bags I try to use them within the week. Have stretched it out to a month on occasions. Anyone else with other ideas, methods or theories? Slabslinger
  24. Nice catches. Interesting about the numbfish. I've never seen one before. In the photo of the 2 lizards and the 3 bream, is the middle bream definitely a bream? Looks a little funny around the mouth and gill? Might just be the angle.
  25. What is Tandaco Seasoning and where can I get some?
