Good onya Marcel for breaking the jew 'duck'

Nice work Nathan, I'll keep an eye out for you next time doing my groceries. I'm surprised there is anything right in that spot at the moment. I drive over the bridge 4-5 nights a week, fairly late, and since mid winter there have been 20 guys and I'd say up to 40 rods in the water on a regular basis. Have seen it just this last week with a rod every two feet for the span of the bridge. Must be some serious tangles. I wish fisheries would have a trip past them now and then. I've observed some very small silhouettes swimming in buckets as I drive by Well done on the bream on a livie. Can't say I've ever done that. Hope conditions aren't bad tonight. I worked all weekend so I'm busting for a fish. Looking out the window right now at a few likely gutters. Just gotta get it past the who'll no doubt put a bit of a protest in. Slabslinger

Are you sure your health was to do with the swells or possibly more so with the night before? Either way, well done on a sweet king. I can't wait to have a crack myself someday. Slabslinger

Hi Raiders, First of all Merry Christmas to everyone. Hope Santa has been generous All the pressie action is out of the way here. My boys have been up since 5am. Just a little report from Xmas Eve eve. Arrived at Long Reef Beach at 7.30pm, sun still shining, armed with a stash of southern calamari and arrow squid caught the night before. Rigged up first rod and cast out, picked up a 68cm sambo, before i'd finished rigging my 2nd rod. Lots of aerial action which was great fun. Although it is a great mother in law fish i decided it wasn't for the christmas day BBQ. Kept the sambo for slabs later in the night. Recast both rods and thought i'd be up for a session of salmon, but went quiet for an hour or so. After the sun went down I changed to squid on one rod, salmon on the other. I picked up 3 shovelnose, a smallish stingray & a school shark which I have heard are YUMMO, but don't keep (it's a karma thing). Also had 2 rigs snipped off well above the hook without noticing a bite. Very sharp teeth or scissors. Looked at the clock and it was midnight. Already overstayed, was planning to pull the pin 11.30ish. High tide was a couple of hours away and nothing for the BBQ yet so decided to stay. Soon after one of my rods keel over, I set the hooks and just hung on as I was taken on a blistering first run. This thing took loads of stopping but I put the pressure on slightly and attempted to turn him around. Who was I kidding? It took off on it's second run. I knew this was probably a shark or ray by the feel of it but of course when you're in the heat of the fight you always want to land them just in case. I knew my line was reaching it's end and decided to really try to stop this thing. Wasn't going to happen. PING!! Luckily I had another spool loaded up & ready to go. Next thing I know my phone rings. It's the and she is absolutely . I told her I'd be home in 30 mins. As i hit the button to end my call both rods bent over. Double hit. Hmmmm. What to do? I grabbed one rod, set the hooks and felt it had a bit of weight about it. Pretty certain I was onto a jew. Tell tale headshakes and the way it was fighting tells me it wasn't a shark or ray. Fought it patiently for a few minutes, all the way to the shorebreak and started walking up the beach. GONE!! I was gutted. Ran to my other rod but whatever it was had eaten my bait and long gone. Devo!!! Not long after I picked up 2 x 42cm bream and a 51cm tailor. Finally something to show for a long sesh. Packed up and finally arrived home @ 4am. Most action packed beach sesh for a long time but my god I was sooooo tired yesterday after the made me get up with the boys and denied me a sleep in. Have a great holiday period everyone, stay safe and may the fish be hungry. Slabslinger

Calendar noted & a great cause too. Shame last year was a howler. Hand already in the air for a spot on a boat. Please PM me now or closer if anything available. Shared expenses no problem. Happy to travel but Northern Beaches preferred. Slabslinger

Hi All, Just after an opinion on how to keep squid gathered 24 hrs before use. Caught a little bag of mixed arrows and southerns last night which I plan to use tonight. As soon as i caught them I placed them in a plastic ziplock bag and sat the bag upon ice bricks. When i got home I placed the bag straight in the freezer. This morning I got up and checked them and they have that mottly maroon colouring, which I hope is not the 'pink' that everyone says is bad. Is this ok or should I not freeze them next time if I'm going to use them the next night? Any tips appreciated. Thanks in advance & Merry Xmas, Slabslinger P.S. Adjustedpete - These are finally droughtbreakers after our sesh. Have targetted them regularly but deadset lost my mojo, up until now. I think i'm back Now to turn them into a Jew or two for Xmas Day

Enough to make you think twice about wading in for extra casting length. Anyone guess what sort of shark is it though?? Very long fins and tail. Slabslinger

Nice report mate. My little bloke turns 3 this next week. To start his day off I plan to take him to a little local creek that I wouldn't eat anything from as it runs down from a bit of an industrial area, but I've seen it loaded with BIG bream and mullet. It would amaze some people what is just on their doorstep. Hopefully will be a day to remember for him. He gets so excited when I tell him I'm going for a fish, god only knows how he'll react when I tell him he's coming with me. Slabslinger

Way to go whytri. Don't forget to souvenir the jewels. Hopefully first of many mate. Slabslinger

Hi all, I'll be camping at Del Rio from about the 28th December 09 to 2nd Jan 2010. Will be landbased for Jews as much as the can stand, but would be stoked if I could squeeze onto a boat at some stage even if just for a few hours. Of course happy to contribute with expenses. Also if anyone is interested in landbased let me know. Always good to have a mate nearby, and mine that are coming just aren't the fishing type. Slabslinger

Way to go mate. Glad to see you are braining the squid. I've gone icy cold on them lately. Can't even get a follow. I'll have to book a seat someday soon. Slabslinger

After aborting a few sessions lately because of the wind kicking up, I hit a normally productive wharf in Pittwater last night around the high tide planning on stocking up on a few squid. Adjustedpete was already on site, with another guy whos name has escaped me (not sure if a raider or not), and looking for some reassurance on his retrieval technique which has so far seen him luck out. Won't be long mate....looks all good. I rigged up and divulged every little bit of information I could think of that normally would get results. Despite our persistence for the next few hours, the squid weren't playing ball with any of the jigs on offer. I took a moment to pick up a few yakka and pinned one my bigger rig. It seemed the squid were out long and had an appetite for yakka ( just not the one on my squid spike) as I lost a couple of livies to their tell tale destructive pulsing drags. I also rigged up a single hook just on light main line, loaded it up with a yakka fillet, flung it out as far as I could without weight and let it drift slowly to the depths. Before long I was onto a tank of a bream , kindly netted by another fisho i'd met before at this spot, nice old bloke. Tried again in vain for some squid but this fish will make a sweet meal tonight. Was nice to finally hook up for a session with a like minded Raider. Pete's generosity, enthusiasm & willingness to share many of his tips secrets and stories typified everything that is Fishraider. I look forward to next time. Slabslinger PS. Looks like it's me that has to work on my squdding, consecutive donuts last 2 trips PPS. Pete, my pics are rubbish, if you are able would you mind throwing on the pic you took. Cheers.
