  1. Hi Everyone, Heading to Jindy for 3 days this weekend to snowboard. I think its possibly raining on one day so I am going to take two rods with me. One is a 6lb drop shot flicky one, the other a ****** special 9lb mono. Can any one PM me spot thats are a short drive or walk from the town to go for some trout or salmon? Any tips on rigs, bait or types of lure that work would be much appreciated as I only ever go for Bass in the fresh up in Sydney. Many thanks.
  2. hey all Im mainly a kayak fishing man or rock fishing man, but my cousin recently bought a tinnie.. it can fit like 3 people and has a 15HP motor on it (dont know if thats fast or slow?) So we plan to launch the it at botany bay this saturday. Im sure i can google map a good boat ramp. But just a question on where to burley up some yakka ?? ( i dont think ive ever been to botany besides when i was a kid about 15 years ago) Also i just plan to take one livie set and forget rod, one 6lb flick stick with small plastics, and one heavy X-rap spinning rod. Any advice on where to anchor? If we anchor? any GPS markings to float above? where to get yakka ? or any structures to fish around would be very appreciated. Can PM me or post up here if its common knowledge! many thanks.
  3. G'Day Raiders. This Friday - Sunday i will be on a house boat cruising down the Hawkesbury. Starting place is from Brooklyn (thats all i know) I plan to take a heavy 20lb outfit and a lighter 6lb dropshot combo. I just bought some 5 inch Gulp Jerk Shad in the Sardine colour and matched them to a 1/4 ounce #4 jig head for Jews I also got some standard smaller curl tails and minnows with 1/8 and #1 hook for flathead/bream. Plan is to have a rod in the water at all time haha well see how we go. Question #1 : Am i on the right track for the Jews ??? right size plastic / weighted jig head ?? I have never caught nor targeted a jew on plastics before and dont know the depths around hawkesbury Question #2 : Whats the best way of getting live baits around the hawksbury for my 20lb set up ?? i am picturing lots of little poddie mullets around which i can catch and keep in a bucket till dusk ? Thanks for all replies. Ps. Do the pelagics come up the hawksbury? any point in trolling a hardbody from spot to spot? THANKS!
  4. i pulled in about 4 x 45-55cm flatties with a sprike pro bream lure just off the sand flats in front of the pelican feeding bay last week popped for whiting for nada, but others were doing well
  5. thanks mate i bought some DN90 drainage pipe as the DN100 stuff only comes in sewer grade and is super thick and heavy will knock something up tomoro night was speaking to another fisho in the office and he rekons the yakka wont last long in the keepers net cos the slime will come off em. so that explains that! probs wont be going near down riggers any time soon, i have many other milestones to complete before im up to that. im usually a skinny water, one rod and a bag of plastics type of guy.
  6. hey thanks for the replies yeah im planning on catching the yakas at a wharf, then paddling out and fishing for kings on the drift whilst flicking a plastic with a lighter rod. so i think this bait tube idea will work as im not too worried about the drag cos i dont go that far out from where i launch. I dont get why the yakas would last longer in the bait tube over the keepers net tho??? less restrictions on their body movements i guess? as for down rigging... my kayak is pretty simple haha havent got anything shcmicko like that on it. cheers for the ideas guys crig - esky (or blow up kiddie pool)with a pump is what i usually use for rock fishing days but yeah it would have to go in the back of the yak and wouldnt be that accessible.
  7. hey all ive probably posted enough questions regarding kayaks and kayak related issues over the last year but i got one more for ya!... so ive been trolling the f### out of middle harbour with a whole range of hardbodies. Recently added a 12cm Rapala XRap Salt Glass Ghost and a 12cm Halco King Brown Laser Pro to my collection. All i ever seem to collect are salmon and today... smelly old pikes! so the new plan is to collect 3 or 4 small yaka, paddle out deep, pin one through the nose with a size 6.0 octopus hook with a bout 10m of free line and let him swim around unweighted. Problem is... my kayak is a sit in, with limited room in the cock pit after i load up 2 rods, lure box, bag of plastics and a net. Do you think... having 4 yakas in a keepers net hanging over board will deter kings from striking my rigged yaka? AND... would it perhaps attract the attention of some bigger undesirables such as bull sharks? I know its not good form to bleed a fish on a kayak for the above stated reason. Ive got about 60L of sealed off storage space in the back of my kayak. I could rig up a livie tank to put in there, it would just be real difficult to catch a slippery yaka whilst not falling out of the kayak as it is almost an arms reach away. Thoughts or past experiences appreciated
  8. hey anyone caught anything with Pro Range Slick Rigs? I have the white mullet one with a black dot, think its called drop bear? I originally bought them for jew bouncing at night with no success, and tried trolling them from a kayak for kings for zilch. basically wanna expand my larger lure collection - was thinking about a 12cm Rapala Xrap Ghost White, or these massive stickbait things with the crooked hook. aim is to troll for kings this summer from my kayak Thoughts on these lures or other lure reccomendations much appreciated. THanks
  9. hey everyone just asking for an update on the conditions at The Entrance right now a little while ago the Pelican Feeding semicircle was half covered in water as the mouth was near closed and the water had risen some 1.5m creating a very stinky stagnant lake is it still like this or have they dredged it out?? Thanks will be heading up to visit family soon, wondering whether to bother with the kayak and fishing gear.
  10. Caught and released this EP at Hunters Hill. Didnt measure but estimate it to be 25-27cm. Was throwing 3" pearl gulp minows around which were getting smashed by choppers. Swapped up to this noisey little trollcraft "shrimp" i think its called? and noticed it was being followed into the lights. Few casts later, bam.
  11. hey everyone heading to Brissy for 4 days work next week. Will be staying in the heart of the city, right on Brisbane River (near St John Cathedral i believe) wanna take my plastics rod and a bag of gulp for night time entertainment. Any advice on the harbour/river? from photos it looks pretty brown. any walkable creeks to hit up for bass or bream or anything? many thanks
  12. hey, yeah it took me a while to find the spot where everyone goes fishing. The wall infront of the casino currently has alot of ships docked with the engines running late into the night, not sure what they are doing? but im sure that would scare of all the fish. Marlin Marina is also a no go for fishing. But the most northerly side of the marina, right before the sand banks, if you walk out past the 3rd lamp post - thats where you can fish. first night - got there about 11.30 after wandering around most of Cairns. I saw a 97cm Barra (about 10kg i heard the next day) get caught on a hand line with a live mullet. getting the fish up 1.5m onto the ledge was the trickiest bit, but everyone on the wall helped and cheered when it was landed haha. second night - went back a bit earlier and was flicking some large shallow diving lures. picked up 4 or 5 hairtails (never caught these before) took me a while to learn how they strike. lost a fair few plastics to them without know what even happened! eventually started using hardbodies with 2 pairs of trebles and was hooking them every second strike (always on the middle treble) third night - was determined to hook a barra and used a modified Slick Rig that a local gave to me the previous night. Lost it within 5 minutes (possibly to a hair tail) and then it started raining. so yeah. sussed out the area for next time, saw a big barra, caught a few hairtails. also had three runs on a small 3inch water melon minnow near the top of the water, i think it was largish 50cm tailors as i saw the flash of silver come up from the murks when it struck. it had a forked tail with black along the edges. the hook didnt catch on either of the runs which has never happned to me with tailors before. My leader was all jaggard when i inspected it after.
  13. BAHHAHA that hilarous! i totally thought itd be like that with the plastics. I arirved here today at midday and will check out the casino wall tonight, then watch the soccer. Its only 3 blocks from my hotel. i would LOVE to hook a barra!!! but i didnt know they were in the open waters? i thought theyd be in the muddy inland creeks and rivers. I will settle for a jew tho hahahaha. Good thing i brought some bigger plastics but only have 6lb braid on my flick rod. keep an eye peeled in the reports thread. and PS> anyone traveling on planes with fishing rods must check them in now. security wouldnt let me through with it as carry on.
  14. hey guys thanks for the replies i know where im staying, right on the espanade. Is the main wharf the big one thats runs in a square formation where the Shangri-La is? i think ill wake up at 5.30 to do the morning session over the night sessions. will only be practising catch and release too
  15. Hey all I am heading to Cairns for 4 days with work next week. Flying up from sydney and working 9-5pm might take a small flick rod and some plastics. Can any one shed some light on the area for me ??? Any directions to popular night spots? or whats biting at the moment. Thanks all
  16. hey thanks for all the replies im heading up to the Entrance to visit family next week so will see whats happening around there first. I think this time of year all the old codgers will be lined up along the lake wall for the blackies. will give LC fresh a go when im back. maybe spinner baits are the go? had an awesome time in South America Jew Hunter, went to Argentina for Iguazu Falls and the walked on the glacier in El Califate, tried to climb the volcano in Pucon, Chile but the earthquake meant they kept it closed until "further notice", crossed the salt flats of Bolivia from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to Uyuni, Bolivia, cylced down Death Road in La Paz, Bolivia (an Israeli girl unfortunately went off the side and died the following day, dont know if it made the news back in Oz) walked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Peru and visited the Christ Statue in Rio, Brasil (tho it was undergoing routine maintenance at the time - unlucky, it was covered in scafolding) currently waiting for a CD copy of photos from my friend because my camera broke whilst sandboarding in Huachachina, Peru. Ill put some photos up soon, i remember i had a good one of the pirahnas from Rurrenabaque. Id rate priahna fishing quite similar to that off fishing for yakkas. just use a small hook and small piece of meat on a hand line.
  17. hey all ive just arrived home from travelling all over south america for the last 4 months as i have just finished uni. before i left i was having a good time swapping to plastics and lures trolling for salmon in my kayak at balmoral, using surface poppers for bass in lane cove river fresh (got none), bouncing plastics at the north entrance for some good sized flatties, popping for bream under figtree bridge (also for none but the odd chopper) and cleaning up on blackies in the entrance channel. now its winter ill probably put in a few midnight jew sessions locally at gladesville. now that 5 months have almost passed, just a quick post to see if any of the above listed fishing spots are still producing fish or if its totally the wrong season now? thanks i gave fly fishing a go in Pucon, Chile using a wet fly and landed my first fresh water salmon (it was tiny) as well as landing a few piranhas in the pampas rivers, Rurrenabaque, Bolivia. those things are vicious!
  18. I had a similar problem when i had dead poddies in a bucket i was butterflying ive had mixed responses when have asked more experienced fishermen what are your thoughts on that?
  19. G'day Headed up to the Entrance to visit family over the last 2 week. Took the kayak and all my gear with me as I was determined to catch my first fish on all the lures and plastics ive been buying as of late. over the whole trip i caught: 3 sole on nuclear chicken 3 inch podgy (28-30cm) 2 bream on white 3 inch minow (20-22cm) 1 estuary perch on tan 3 inch curl tail (18cm) 1 silver trevally on white 3 inch minow (20cm) 24 flathead on a range of plastics (30-47cm) 47cm is my PB now 1 flathead on a trollcraft shrimp hardbody (36cm) 1 salmon on live garfish on a double hook rig with sinker (about 65cm) 2 whiting on a bubble pop 35 green and gold popper (20cm-ish. Both were foul hooked on the side of the head tho) 18 luderick on cabbage (30-46cm) 46cm is also my PB Most fish were caught drifting the north side channel from the palm tree island, under the bridge, and to the north entrance wharf. The whiting were taken from the sand bar tho, and the salmon from Snapper Point. The blackfish landbased from the mouth. Im pretty happy cos up until 2 weeks ago I had not caught a single fish on plastics. I have also learnt how use the wind as an advantage whilst fishing. All the small fish, salmon and most of the flatheads were released except the 47cm one. All blackfish were kept and given to family and friends. I still have the big momma in my fridge tho!
  20. Hi all After setting up my kayak for trolling for salmon I would like to pick up a few bonito before i set my sights on kings this summer. Any reccomendations of spots or tips to catch these buggers are welcomed on forum or by PM. Happy new year everyone
  21. i think you might be on the money one of those salmon stole my front set of trebles and it might not swim right any more. ill test it in my pool this arvo. infact, he stole the keyring thing that connects the treble to the lure too! maybe it straightened out on me. I think ill invest in a better quality lure next time round. ive got a smaller 2-4kg bream rod with 6lb braid on it but havent bothered to upgrade my 4-5kg rod as of yet. Pretty much waiting for it to die on me as it has been splashed with salt water so many times. Havent really taken care of it well.
  22. Thanks Rich I have heard of this trick before and i tried it out on the day. Though, the line was soooo twisted it was doubling and tripling up on itself, sometimes around the rod eyelets if i left the line go slack or between the rod eyelets preventing me from casting. Never had twists like this before. I was using a "troll craft" lure and they are a cheaper variety. Maybe the slight change in speeds due to each paddle stoke is causing the lure to roll over in the water. Ill have a play around with it in shallow water next time. My gf thinks the fish is doing death rolls below the baot to get back at us haha
  23. Thanks for the replies all I went out again this morning with my gf and passed her the rod when I was on. Ended up with a similar haul, all lived to fight another day. She had heaps of fun! I dont use a swivel, i usually just tie the line straight to the lure, though will try a swivel next time. Weed is possible, although I keep an eye on my rod tip to see if its constantly vibrating. After todays disasterous tanlges i ended up scrapping my spool and starting again. Will try to do all the things you have said above to keep this spool tanlge free! After i master the salmon i think ill be up for the king fish challenge next! peace
