  1. Hi I dont know where Anchor is sorry, i catch all my poddies at Hunters Hill High school pretty much on the sand banks right where the oval is. I cast them out from the sand banks under the burns bay road bridge, usually walk out to the sand bar in the middle there. I used to fish from under the bridge on the Hunters hill side but theres just too much rubbish in the water like old bricks, too many snags. Ive tried through the nose but ive lost too many from castin them too hard haha. my rig will go one way and the poddy will go the other! if i do it through the tail they stay on the hook after a strong cast and stay alive for a fair while. Maybe i gotta practise some more with that. as for keeping them, i never keep them alive. just roll them in some salt and into the freezer at home. Ive caught flathead around that area with butterflied half poddies just never on a live poddy. I got a PM about a different style poddy trap to catch smaller poddies so im gonna give that one a go soon! Just finished my final semester of exams so if your around Hunters Hill youll be seeing me soon!
  2. hey everyone this is not just (another) poddy mullet thread, as i am posing a poddy mullet related question, as i do not fish with other fishermen who use poddy mullet all that regularly. I catch live poddy mullet with a small hook and light line and they are generally about the 12-14cm mark. I throw these out live (single hook through the back nearer the tail end) and have caught large and small sole, large and very small bream, all size tailor but never a flathead. my question is what size poddy mullet do you use to catch flathead? (as my poddies are on the large side) has it just been bad luck so far or is a 14cm poddy too large for a toothless flatty to tackle? all the breams have gone for the tail end of the poddy which is y i place my hook there. I cant manage to catch smaller poddies cos they are scared of freaken everything! including the bread i throw at them. next time i go im going to use a bait trap (which they are scared of too) but catch a poddy on line first and put him in the bait trap. maybe this will entice the smaller ones in! Thanks
  3. they usually swim around wharf pilons, deep enough to not see them. Although i have seen a few closer to the surface at places like Clifton Gardens. if they are there theyll take your bait within seconds and its difficult to feel the bites. use small hooks and small prawn baits. most wharfs with deep water will hold jackets at one time or another
  4. hahahahaha thanks for the pic looks like youve caught a few jewelfish in your day! there seems to be some very knowledgable people on this site thanks for keeping me informed! when i land my first jew ill be sure to start a similar collection
  5. oh cool anybody here collect or keep them? i googled some pictures but they just look like lil stones to me
  6. An old wharfie told me recently that if I ever catch a jewfish that i should crack its skull open and inside i will find two bones that aren't attached to the outter skull but are just lingering inside its head. There is an imprint of a bird's head on the two bones and he had cufflings made from two similar bones. True/False? he seemed pretty adamant about it.
  7. Loop Road - under burns bay road bridge Fish the last 2 hours of the incoming tide, sunset or sunrise can get legal flatheads and bream, only caught small whiting tho ive caught both on unpeeled prawn and live and butterflied poddy mullet this is where i go to flick soft plastics, but have yet to catch anything with them!
  8. wow thanks everyone i will try a few of those different methods next time im out im a land based fisherman so id prefer a solid hook location to get a decent cast out without losing the yaka. Ive tried the lip placing and it didnt work well. through the nose or eye with a rubber band sounds like a winner. to answer the above question (forgot who) i place the second hook on the top on the upper half nearer the tail (not on the under belly)
  9. Hi most times i go fishing i like to have a whole live yellow tail out off to the side (if i can manage to catch one) with in the last few weeks ive had several hits, all with no hook ups however, my question is where do you pin the yaka? i generally have them sitting on the bottom, unless im at Clifton Gardens i usually use a double hook rig (suicide or slide) and have one hook through the back behind the head and the other hook through his back further down near his tail. Ive noticed that after about 20-30 minutes his mouth is wide open and body is siezed up!!!! Am i hooking him too deep through the back? Is there a specific region to hook them where they dont eventually die? Or any other methods of keeping your yellow tail alive longer would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  10. how was the wind? i woke up at 5am ready to go CG this morning but went back to bed cos of my shaking window frames!
  11. im fishing around Clarkes point in Woolwich at night went last night from about 8pm to 1am used a double hook rig with about half (tail half) of a 25cm yellow tail i caught on bread nothing touched the yellow tail bait, though something very very solid took hold of my lighter line just had 9 pound mono with a small bead sinker and medium (dunno the size) hook with half a poddy mullet on it only casted it out about 3 meters and let it drop to the floor next to a pilon. had it resting on a railing. my brother was standing near it at the time it went off. the drag didnt work tho! i think the top of the line was caught on a rod eye or something. whatever took it just bend the rod over quite slowly and continued to swim away. my brother picked it up before it went over the railing and passed it to me. i loosened the drag a bit more. it swam not too quickly around and then started going under the wharf. i tighened the drag and struck it but didnt hook up. the poddy mullet didnt look chewed at all. what does that sound like? im thinking a big ray?
  12. thanks everyone yeah im with the whole smaller bait would suit a larger size range of fish theory too ive had luck butterflying dead poddies, bream and tailor seem to like that alot i think ill stick with the live yellow tail for now i ate a couple of yellow tail before, too much effort for what it was worth
  13. Hi all recently ive found a spot where i can catch large yellow tails quite regularly at night by large i mean around the 30cm mark my question is, do you think a bait like this is too large to catch a school jew or legal kingfish if it was used alive and whole? filletting is always an option tho id rather use live baits i generally use 2 hooks (one on slide) on 30 pound mono with a double line 30 pound mono trace, also i have yet to catch anything using yellow tail dead or alive. just wondering what you would all do??? Thanks!
  14. i have never heard of this hairtail fish before wiki didnt tell me much either they look like an eel thing right? whats the go with them? im assuming a winter fish? good eating? where abouts are they caught in sydney? and what bait or lures do you use? many thanks
  15. Sorry, do you mean near magdala park? near the starch factory? if so ive only caught eels around there big ones too
  16. cheers mate i found some great youtube instructional clips in the end you gotta wax the thread and spin it in the vice whilst applying the dubbing! thats how the material gets woven onto the thread and is what i missing! looks like ill need a bit of practice too
  17. hey i bought some material to make a fly (weed fly for blackfish) never done this before i researched on the net for any instructional websites, found one which was pretty vauge and im not sure if im allowed to link it in this post as that may be against fishraider policy. But, from what i understand, you wrap some string from the eye of the hook down to the bend of the hook, then pinch some dubbing (which i bought from a tackle shop) hold it there with your fingers and then wrap the string back up the hook, over the dubbing to the eye where you tie it off. is it that simple? or will it not last long if i do it incorrectly? thanks in advance
  18. Wow thanks heaps Greg I think im not letting enough line out for my float to reach this cove you are talking about So the blackfishing will pick up in the colder months?
  19. for blackies i fish the pool around the corner from the wharf have you ever noticed that the stringy weed only grows above the water line??? i thought this was odd beacuse i went at low tide once to see what type of weed grows and all i could find was a very small amounts of sea cabbage on the rocks that are usually covered by water.
  20. oh its in the Gladesville area Sydney
  21. Hi all I have occasionally seen people blackfishing at Banjo Paterson. Ive blackfished before at places like The Entrance and other ocean rock shelves and have had some success. However, every time i try it at Banjo Paterson i never seem to get any downs. I mostly go at dusk on the last half of the incoming tide and use local weed (stringy type) If anyone reading this fishes Banjo regularly for blackies and wouldn't mind a tag-a-long to see what im doing wrong at this particular spot, can you please send a personal message. Thanks!
  22. oh would you look at that... bummer thanks guys
  23. was pumping nippers (those yabbies with one big pink claw and one small claw) in the Paramatta river the other day when i fellow fisherman told me that its illegal to do inside the harbour? had a quick look on the fisheries website but couldnt find anything, ill call them soon but just wondering if this was common knowledge or not? i knew of no such ban cheers
