  1. I'm going down to jervis bay towards the end of the week was hoping some raiders could give me a heads up on where to fish as it'll be a first. I know there's good fishing there, seen some massive kings on adventure bound.. Am considering taking the boat - but it may not have a finder riggedand working so might just fish the ocean from land/rocks. If anyone could give me a few places to try for pelagics and maybe even squid, would be much appreciated. Thanks, Nic
  2. Funny you ask I have one friend who is THE WORST fisherman you've ever seen but according to him he's caught every fish in the sea, using every technique, every bait, all gear, all locations... plenty of massive kingfish.. yft, shark etc etc So we went fishing at a kingy spot a few wks ago - first time i'd fished for decent fish with him. Don't even ask about the squiding lets just say it wasn't cheap and another bloke has 8 beautiful prong holes in the back of his neck. anyway, I knew he'd never caught a king.. as luck would have it his line goes off first. my god it was hilarious as 2 of us watched him trying to skull drag it up, panicking on 50buck jarvis walker junk with no rod mvt. No tips were offered. he got busted. Prop about 50cm king. Next day he gets spooled thrice on reels worth i'd say $30 with about 4lb ten yr old line maybe 50m of line and about a kilo of drag. You should see the MONSTERS he nearly caught!!! Next day he brings a handline as he's buggered all his reels. This fish pulled hard so I go for the gloves but he declines them. I put 1 on anyway and offer to hold the line while he puts a glove on but no, can't do that! Maybe i'm a %%%%%, but I took alot of joy in watching him cut his hands! With the gloves on he did get this fish up and it was a good fish, 88cm. But personally id have to say catching kings on handlines isn't much fun. Unless you just want to eat em. But make sure you have gloves!
  3. Yep those black magic's are quality... managed to grab some bargains the other day for some that are more or less replicas of the jetsetters. Just gotta test them out now looking forward to it, hopefully water should already be warming up out there
  4. Yeh cheers huey finally got the engine serviced today and the mech said the same thing about alloy and advising on a SST. He did however straighten it out a little - I didn't even notice it! Nothing too major but def needed some work. He thinks he has a test SST 15 so i'll try test it next w/e and see how it goes. Pel, it's a 3 blader. The heights pretty much fine too, could be a smidgen higher but more or less where it should be Thnaks guys
  5. Thanks huey will do. ps the solas on it now is alloy. nic
  6. Hi Huey, Only got round to checking prop specks today - it's a solas 13.5 x 15 - which I would have thought would be pretty good. But anyway i'm still waiting on a throttle cable so still havn't managed to properly test it... but as I said It's def not going over 5200 and the engine is very healthy and boat is 'stock; with no options/extras adding weight. What kind of prop would you try on it knowing what it's already got (I was under the impression the prop on it now is already on the smaller end of the scale)?? Is it a matter of just trying a few out and seeing how it goes? I'm finishing off a yr of completely unpaid full-time work as a physio so i'm broke as buggery but it's a priority so would like to bring the boat round in next few months. Out of interest how much would an ally prop set me back? Thanks Nic.
  7. My fad dreams are gooone! thanks buddy
  8. What size kings are we talking? Daiwa opus bull 4500 is quality for it's price - it's a bigish threadline, but well made with tons of drag, s/s, sealed drag etc that will work well for light-medium trolling/boat fishing. I have one of these with a shimano catana rod that's never let me down (although i've never tested that rod on anything too large and incharge). I know you can get this as a combo under $200 if you google it. I use this on a rock rod too so it's a handy reel to have. Also check out penn spinfishers. If you want something lighter/smaller to cast and spin with, the shimano symetre is priced very well (3000 or 4000 size spool with braid will work). Whack one of them with a starlo stix 4-8kg. that'l be over $200 but well worth the extra. That's a light set-up but great for small kings. Ive had a few 90cm+ kings on the same set-up and it was sweet. You don't always have to spend big to get qaulity but stretch you budget a little and you'll thank yourself later. Just make sure you get a decent reel that's the main thing. Kings don't stuff around. If you buy something shite you'll end up buying again trust me everyonme does it. Just my 2c i'm sure the others on here will help you out
  9. So correct me if i'm wrong, but 'legally' is all that's needed to go offshore a marine radio?? (and the safety gear required to register boat)...
  10. Yeh just realised that.. Thanks for the thumbs up looks like the fads will have to wait. bugger
  11. Hi all, I'm planning a trip to broken bay fad early next wk - weather pending of course. But, I don't have an epirb or a radio... I have a reliable 4stroke honda being serviced tomorrow on a 5.4m ally. Is there any advice anyone could give me - I only plan to go if the weather's good. I've got the rest of the gear and tackle but it just occured to me I may need to put a little thought into it... If the weather is good are there usually still a fair few boats out there midweek? Anyone know if there's phone reception out there? Cheers, Nic By the way if anyone thinks it's a stupid idea feel free to let me know.. never been further than a few k's offshore, so i'm not sure if it's a big deal or not
  12. yeah i've seen a few myself. this one's good. What do you reckon of those colours? bright colours ok? i know the blues, silvers, white's etc are def the go but thought i'd give something else a try...
  13. Hi, I'm putting together an order for a few x raps just wanted to see what others thought worked best (I know they're all pretty good but anyway..) Using them mainly for trolling and some cast/retrieve around pittwater/BB for kings, salmon (any pelagic but mainly kings). has anyone had much luck on the x rap xr10 DEEP lures?? I've only used the regular shallower version. Was also gonna get few xr12's but can only get in HOT HEAD or PERCH colour (ebay) - what do you guys think? Also what length/size skirts do ppl find are the go trolling the FADs for dollies? Never been, planning on going next wk with some better weather!! ps, is the phone reception out there? Sorry for all the Q's Nic
  14. Thanks Huey. I'll get the pitch size either today or tomorrow and get back to you. Appreciate it. Pelican - no added weight to the boat at all (small livey tank and two blokes). Yrs ago I didn't know much about this sort of stuff so I can't comment on the WOT after run-in. Can't say i've ever noticed a change though. The prop is in good condition though (after a repair!). I'll try get a pic of transom height and will be sure to ask today/tomorrow as she's getting a service. Thanks guys.
  15. Hi all, I run an 8yr old honda 4stroke 75hp on a 5.35m ally. At WOT i'm only getting about 5100rpm (i think i'll have to double check but it's close to that either way). Does that sound too low?? I'd definitelty like some more top end speed. I'm unsure of the pitch on the prop will check soon. If that's the case i'm planning on bringing the boat to you Huey - but I can't really go s/s as my old boy also uses the boat up the hawksbury on occasion and has a strong tendency to test out the sea bed! Thanks Nic
  16. G'day raiders. I'm new to all this (fishing inc) but i'm in the process of rigging my boat up and was wondering if anybody had a boss kit to change steering wheels they wouldn't mind letting go/selling?? I'm also trying to find somewhere on the northern beaches that fabricate or sell the tubing bimini's are built with or something similar (i'm trying to make rocket launchers to attach onto my bimini - similar to the one's seen on ebay - http://cgi.############/Maritime-Boat-Bimin...3286.m20.l1116). If anyone can help would be greatly appreciated. PS is there a marine wreckers/second hand shop on the northern beaches?? Thanks, Nic
