  1. Gday mate, I know you want to get set-up by sat, but I recommend you check out #$#$#$.com I may be wrong and I can't speak for everywhere but downriggers here - rip-off! and very limited choices! With the dollar at the moment I think you'd be very wise to get one from the US. A mate of mine did this recently actually I think shipping was 20% of the cost. He was stoked with the price and we love downrigging. Nic
  2. Thanks mate. The other plug would be just left disconnected (to be used only with the other HB accessories), I just can't figure out what to do with the white cable that runs with the red and black. It must be important, but where it goes is amystery to me. There's certainly no plug attached to it and there is no input on the GPS or fishfinder for it.. so it's made to be soldered on to something but what..
  3. Yeh it is a HB GPS. it has the Y connector. Its set out like this... cable coming from GPS unit, splits in two (one goes off to form the plug that plugs into the fishfinder, and the other one the power, earth and white cables aswell as another plug for other HB accessories ie, smart cast/weather sense..... confused
  4. Yeh I've got both manuals. The GPS one is terrible. It says it the NMAE (or something like that) in, but no telling what to do with it..
  5. Hi guys, Just got up from downstairs trying to install a humminbird GPS receiver I got a good price on from in the states. It's all in fine, connected up to a matrix 27 - which is a few yrs old and doesn't have latest software, but should still be fine surely (maybe ableit all features.. will update this as soon as I've fixed this prob). The GPS comes w 3 cables, power, earth - and then - a white one (NMEA or something like this) - the fishfinder won't find the GPS when I turn it on and it says it is not connected. I HAVE NOT connected the white cable to anything - I have no idea where it goes!! ...so i'm assuming here in lies the problem.. Can anyone help me??
  6. Thanks for your help guys. For the record I am a big fan of DFI's I think they're fantastic.. ableit out of my price range for this boat anyway. And, achjimmy, yes I completely agree more parts doesn't always mean more probs. Simplicity in design is great but I think your car motor analogy settles that one. If anything it seems to be the electrical side of things where the cracks start to show. But like a few said, a poorly serviced/looked after 4stroke is bound to be bad news - so I'm on the lookout for a good one and will def get in contact with Huey when i'm back from newcastle in 6wks. Cheers again guys, Nic
  7. Thanks for your thoughts mate. I agree I think DFI's are awesome - but, I think they're too new. There are still some probs to iron out in these engines. I've owned 4's and personally, I love them. They've become much lighter recently and out of the hole performance is something I can miss out on (with 2's). Plus I don't have the budget for a new or near new engine. 5yrs down the track i'd def check out a etec/optimax. In regards to that vid, haha yeh i've seen it! No offence, but marketing like that is just pathetic! I'm sure they are good, but that's just a joke of a vid (if the yam is even under full throttle at the start is questionable and of course a 2stroke is gonna kill a 4 down low off the mark AND... the ****** boat is ruined!!!!) Whoever is behind thne making of that video should be shot!! Thnaks mate Nic
  8. Hi all, katari you got me thinking.. I have a 5.35m allycraft with a 75hp honda 4 (2000/2001 model).. the boats quite light so it's not really too underpowered inshore. But, I take it offshore a bit and with some swell I could definitely do with more power. Plus on a clean day let's face it we all want to go faster! It's only done about 400-450 hrs and has been meticulously maintained so it runs great! Uses so little fuel it constantly amazes me. I am toying with the idea of selling it for something bigger. I want a 4 because I love the economy and a DFI would be out of my price range. I have no idea what my engine is worth, but I was hoping I 'may' be able to buy a used 90hp (or perhaps 100hp yamm) for a similar price to what mine's worth?? Does this sound reasonable?? I would only consider an engine with similar hrs to mine (a little more but not heaps) in great condition.... (anyone in the 'know' know much about how a 4stroke yamm and honda of the same era in that hp range compare??????). Cheers, Nic
  9. Thanks Slinky.. Yeh I had a 4000 stradic, loved it (the older model) but I love this 3000 symetre I have now and I've recently spent a fair slab of cash on the boat aswell as bigger overhead stuff (went out wide of browns yesterday got up 2 marlin and a heap of stripeys awesome day now i'm paying for it - forgot hat, sunscreen and sunnies!). Actually just missed out on an awesome deal for 4000stradic so I think i'll go the symetre - my 3000 nicely landed a 8kg king a few wks ago so im very happy with them. Appreciate the advice mate. Nic Thanks Josh. Yeh i wondered why I couldn't seem to find the ssg's here. Agrred with all yo saying on the symetre thanks mate. Nic
  10. Hi guys, Was hoping someone could shed some light on their preference b/w getting a penn spinfisher 750ssm vs a shimano symetre 4000. I've got a 3000 symetre and love it but i've never used a spinfisher.. but have always liked the idea of them, particularly the waterproof(ish) drag. I know the penns are prob not quite what they used to be.. or so they say. It's for a starlo stix 4-8kg. Used for kings and throwing lures at pelagics mainly. Cheers, Nic Sorry i think i've just answered my own Q's. Didn't realised the size of the ssm's. In that case can anyone compare it too a similar sized spinfisher ssg??
  11. Yeh cheers mate I think that's prob it. I think from memory I had a similar prob with a vhf once. Got this feeling its all gonna work early on the water tomorrow morning. thats the plan anyway hah
  12. Pel, you saying that as of a few days time, boats under 8m will need an epird for open waters?? ****!
  13. Hi, Just put a new 27mhz GME radio and ariel (1.8m) in the boat. I connected it to the earth and power my humminbird is powered with... when the radio is on w/o the finder, I get no reception (just poor scrappy signal/fuzz)... when it's on with the finder, I get the same but with way more/louder interference. I don't really care about the interference b/w the two for the time being as the radio's there only for regulations and I won't be using them both at the same time (I've spent so much time buggering around w electronics lately I cannot be stuffed switching it just yet). BUT, my question is, why can I not pick up a signal? I havn't tested it on the water, but i'm less than a Km from pittwater/the ocean so I wouldn't have thought it would matter. Ariel is connected right mounted into ally, not running along any metals.. Any ideas???????? Thanks, Nic
  14. Hi Andrew, The technique we use and I think a lot of others use is drifting unweighted pillies (or baitfish you've caught). So you head up past the fad in the opp direction of the current and then drift back down past it freespooling unweigted baits (we usually use salted pillies w the line ran through the eye and then pinned once in the body).. don't be scarred to drift way past the fad. You can then troll back against the current. On sunday we trolled with 6/7 inch skirts only and got hit on every single pass bar maybe one (pink seemed to work best). There's a hell of a lot of activity out there around sunrise so you could try heaps of diff things im sure they'd get hit. And like the others answered, depending on the swell and how your boat handles, could be 15 mins in a quick boat with good conditions and over an hour in a tinnie with swell. Good luck
  15. ha no worries mate fit a description very similar to a bloke I studied with. happy fishing
  16. G'day Huss and welcome. just a side note... Don't suppose your a physio??
  17. sunday before and just after sun up was awesome. we stayed till about 11 from memory we got about 20 dollies and 10ish tunas. some good size tunas too. yeh current is really strong so watch out for the you know whos who like to zig zag about the fads
  18. New symetres are fantastic little reels. I have a 3000 thats pretty much become my go to reel inside. Love the thing. Great value and a tough performer. Nic
  19. Harbour can be easier if you don't know where to go (as it's crowded you can see where/what everyone else is doin g) and you can catch pelagics. Is also very consistent. Hawkesbury is good too but from my exp need to know where to go and what the tides, currents etc are doing a little better. Different fish of course. There's some good videos on youtube about fishing the hawkesbury Good luck
  20. Looks good mate well done. How much did it set you back. Ps, I reckon for the cash those symetre's are about the best bang for your buck
  21. The ovens or north whale pretty reliable. Fresh bait or pillies ganged (under a float) is my pick. Good luck.
  22. Thanks everybody! Fingers crossed I'm gonna get smashed a few times by the sounds of it JB's epic! Looking forward to it will be sure to let you know how I go, thanks again
  23. Yeh inside. About 6 weeks ago we saw a beast in amongst the morings. As soon as it got to the surface it went balistic but atleast we got to see it. Id have had no chance anyway. I swear it looked at us, with a look on it's face as if to say you moron you have no chance check this shit out.. Bang! Biggest i've seen, so there are def some decent size kings coming in on occasion
  24. Cheers Adrian will check em out. Know any good rock fishing spots?
