Beach Fisho Posted May 26, 2006 Share Posted May 26, 2006 (edited) Hi Raiders, It's come time to re-spool my Alveys in anticipation of the winter beach fishing season. I have not been happy with the last few mono lines i have used on my Alveys and am looking for some advice from fellow Alvey users I have a 350b Blackfish Reel, 650A Surf Reel and a vintage rosewood reel. So i normally go for a 4-6lb line for the Blackfish reel, 6-10lb on the vintage and 8-15lb on the 650A. My only thought about braid is that it may not be gentle on the finger when guiding line back onto the reel, perhaps I’m soft, but it was something i thought of. I am interested in a line with low memory, strong yet still with small diameter, and knot strength. Braid seems to fit these requirements, but i have not heard or seen anyone using it. Kantong Try Platil or Maxima they have performed ok for me on Alveys in the past around the 8 to 10 kg for the beach unless you are after Whiting then go for about 4 kg If you are targeting Jews mayve a bit heavier 12 to 15 kg but your distance will suffer a bit when casting Cheers Stewy Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Beach Fisho Posted May 26, 2006 Author Share Posted May 26, 2006 (edited) G'day Kantong, Yep i bought my first alvey about 3 years ago (Vintage) and since then have gone for the Luderick/Blackfish reel and a bigger surf reel. This has worked for my as i use the Luderick Reel (light outfit) for fishing for Luderick, bream, whiting and other smaller species, however have landed some serious salmon and King George as well with no hassles. This reel has both sidecast and centrepin capability and i find this very handy, i fish centrepin when float fishing and sidecast when beach and bottom bashing. The others i have set up as heavier outfits, for use with larger baits and target species. Biggest benefit for surf and rock fishing is that if the reel gets dirty or clogged with sand, you can just dunk it in the water; give it a quick shake and there you go, clean real. This makes wading out to a far gutter, and at low tide very easy, and you don't have to stress about getting the reel wet. Because Alvey reels have minimum mechanical parts, they are not affected by salt or sand. Just make sure they get a good wash each time you use them. It did take a little practice with the casting technique and working out how to manage the manual drag, but this is quickly learnt over a few sessions. If you can find someone to fish with for the first few times, you'll get it in no time. Another thing to think about is matching the right type and size reel for the fishing method, and rod. This will improve you results dramatically. All in all, i prefer using alveys when i can, however off the boat i revert to my spinning reel. Hope this helps, sorry for the woffle. I would suggest going into a store which specialises in alveys, have a look and get a demo. If you are around the ryde area, i know of a Alvey specialist in North Rocks, Anglers World, Victor will sort you out. Lab Posted May 30, 2006 Share Posted May 30, 2006 Hi i use alvey reels all the time. i use cheap line and just strip off a few meters each time i go fishing..and it wont cut your fingers as much as braid or fire line. and is a lot cheaper...
