Lake Jindabyne

While i am down at Jindabyne during the snow season i thought i may aswell throw the fishing gear in and have a go in the lake.

Can anyone tell me if its worth fishing for trout or any other species for that matter at this time of the year and where in lake jindabyne is a good spot to throw a line in? I'll go hire a tinny to cruise around the lake in so i wont be limited to sections of the shore line.

Any suggestions welcome :1fishing1:

I have fished the lake a few times and have done really well with most days catching double figures, a couple for tea and let the rest go.

It can get a bit cold on the water in winter there with icicles hanging off the guides when trolling. DONT FALL IN!!!!, and it can get very very windy so keep a close eye on the weather

Mostly trolled up browns and rainbows around the 2 islands (Lion & Cub I think they are called). Trolled tassie devils behind fenders seemed to be the best.

Small minnows worked well as I couldnt handle catching fish with all the junk on the line.

When I have been there in summer the fish seem a little deeper and have used leadline or paravanes to get the lures deeper - no I dont have a downrigger.

There are a couple of tackle shops, one near the shell servo next to the caravan park and one in town. Both have got a fair bit of gear

Thanks for the replies fellas, definately sounds like it is worth a shot.

I have got pretty much every single tassie devil in the range so i will give them all a workout.

The water level was quite low last year when i was there and where i saw a fella drag in a monster of a brown trout 3 years ago there wasnt any water at all. Hopefully it hasnt dropped too much further :(

Yep good trout and samon can be caught all year round....Anglers have a week to fish in trout streams and rivers before the winter closure.

Trout streams would be closed to recreational fishing after the June long weekend, from Tuesday, June 14, and will reopen on Saturday, October 1.

This annual closure gives brown, and rainbow trout a chance to breed, but anglers can still fish in designated trout dams all year round.

These closures are an important way of ensuring the valuable recreational fishing industry is sustainable and can continue to benefit rural and regional NSW.

The recreational fishing industry is a major part of many local economies – in the Snowy Mountains region alone, it is estimated to inject $70 million a year into the local economy and support 700 jobs.

Other renowned trout fishing centres include the New England region and the Central and Southern Highlands.

Keen anglers will continue to flock to popular winter fishing spots such as Lakes Jindabyne, Eucumbene and Tantangara dams in the Snowy Mountains, Oberon Dam near Bathurst, Talbingo Dam near Tumut, and Lake Wallace and Thompson’s Creek near Lithgow.

NSW DPI Fisheries officers will be out in force over the long weekend (June 11-13) to advise anglers, enforce size and bag limits and ensure NSW fishing rules are being followed.

Anglers should check they have a current NSW Recreational Fishing Licence, available from more than 1100 agents including bait and tackle stores, &&*&*&, Coles and Shell Touch machines, online or on 1300 369 365.

People found without a licence can be issued with on-the-spot penalties of $200.

Money raised from the recreational licence is placed in Trusts, overseen by angler representatives, and the funds are invested in projects which create better recreational fishing.

Detailed information on trout fishing rules can be found in the NSW DPI Freshwater Fishing Guide, NSW DPI Fisheries offices and most bait and tackle stores.
