Guest BBM Rick
Hit the road at knock-off time on Friday arvo, northbound to spend the weekend fishing with the old man in our club comp. Dad's health is deteriorating, so it is extra special to me these days to enjoy his company whenever possible, and we love nothing better than getting out to fish each month. The plan for the weekend was to hit Lake Macquarie on Saturday morning and see if we could replicate what all the local fishing goosip had been sprouting, Tailor averaging 1.5kg being picked up on the troll. Well after trolling half the system with Rapala CD9's and X-Raps, the wind had started to pick up, so we pulled in close to Pulbar Is and dropped anchor for Dad to bottom bash while I tossed plastics around. The water was gin-clear, and under us were millions of baitfish, maybe Poddys? Anyway, neither of us turned a scale, so we decided to hit the Swansea Channel. Out in the channel, the Sweep (or Dart) were in plague proportions, driving Dad crazy, so we headed a bit further east and picked up a couple of squid and a nice crab! The wind again picked up and we decided to call it a day and go drown our sorrows. Sunday dawned a brilliant looking day, so we decided to head offshore to a spot called 40 Metre. Talk about plagues!! Bloody leatheries, like pirahnas, chopped their way through ANYTHING that dared try and get past them to the bottom!! Sinkers with teeth marks, knotable wire trace was treated without respect! As this was becoming expensive, we decided to head a bit further out and have a drift around. Dad picked up a nice 56cm Sand Flattie that went 1.1kg cleaned. About the only other exciting thing was the huge pod of dolphins that gave us an escort back into the harbour, which was quite a slow trip due to the 20-25knot westerly winds. A poor result for a weekends fishing, but as i said earlier, it was just great to spend the time with the old man. Hopefully next weekend will be more productive? BBM Rick. Bloo62
Yeah, know what you are talking about. Fond memories of fishing with my dad and grandfather as a young'n and looking to organise some trips with my dad and eldest boy now that I have bought my boat. Very special times indeed!!!! Looking to get down south around Greenwell Point or Sussex in the near future when things start to warm up a bit. Bloo
Guest Saqa
The crab, squid and the flaty sounds like a top seafood platter . Good on you for making the effort and good luck for next outing.
Guest madsmc
Tough weekend there Rick. Surprising that you guys didn't pick up any tailor on the troll though as I've heard similar reports. As for the leatheries, , the little buggers seem to be everywhere. Good to hear that your old boy got a nice flattie for the table. That's about all I got on Saturday, a few flatties, all undersized. With any luck next weekend will produce some better results for all of us. Shane
