Arrived at the boat ramp at 4:30am (early start as I had to be home by 12:00)

Turned the sounder on and could not change pages off the GPS (it's a combo unit) - too dark to play with it, so we went off to Mackerel Beach to get some squid.....

Managed 9 palm size ones in about 40 minutes - got to tell you that squid spay egimax works a charm  - all squid were taken with in eye sight of the boat - they would follow the jig but not take it - when the jig got close to the boat we just stopped the retrieve and then shake the rod to imitate a injured prawn and the squid could not resist.

Next stop was Stokes Point to try and get a Kingie.......managed to get the sounder working buy resetting it, set up the downrigger and place a squid on a 2 hook rig....

noticed the rod tip bounce a couple of times - looked like bites but the line did not release from the bomb so just thought that the kingies were playing with it and not grabbing in........the bumping stopped pretty quick so we decided to check the bait......on the end of the line was a 35cm tailor :ranting2: 1 squid lost...kept the tailor for bait.

Made a couple more passes for zip, had enough of trolling so we stuck our head out the front of Joey to do a drift.....caught a wrasse of some type and about 10 undersize flathead...swell was up so was my breakfast :puke:

Decided after a while to head into Patonga for a drift, on the way back watched a guy get absolutely smashed by something, the think peeled line off his reel then snap....better luck next time.

Didn't do much at Patonga just a couple more undersize Fatties.

Quite happy with the morning...getting better at squiding....and was very relaxing drifting off Patonga in he sun

Good to catch something on the downrigger even thou it was a tailor, bait tank drain got blocked and nearly flooding the boat.......spent hours on it Friday adding a pickup and new pump....will pull it apart tonight to clear the blockage..

Ah Aron..a shame about the downrigger woes and the sounder...Tough fixing stuff like that in the dark.

Looks like the egimax spray really works..I just got a can and can't wait to give it a go this week.

Pity the kings didn't want to play..Did you cop that wind yesterday..Must have been good upchuck material off the Joey.

Better luck next outing and hope you get the bait tank blockage sorted out.

Cheers,

Pete.
