Rode Cary
Abalone guts??? i used them for drummer. i guess you use the whole gut as bait for groper. dont hold very well though with a strong cast??? cheers bertrand
RockHoppin
Hooked an 11kg monster on a humble nipper once..but until someone figures out how to bait up the guts of an urchin i dont think you can get anything better than a red crab for groper. Dont bother with 2nd best mate...just make sure you dont underwater every crab in the area. nothing worse than a goose who takes more than he needs.. Davy
but until someone figures out how to bait up the guts of an urchin I also read in a fisho mag recently that sea urchins are the best bait and berley for groper, so if u can get ur hands on them, id mash up a couple for berley and fish with red crabs
Rode Cary
anyone fear the dangerous blue ring octopus when catching the red crabs? haven't seen any on sydney's rock ledges so far. are they common to sydney rocks?
RockHoppin
What I meant to say is dont take more than you need! Anyways, havnt come across any blue rings when collecting crabs. Bit daunting for new comers though. you might want to use gloves first.
Rode Cary
thanks guys for your feedbacks the only reason i'm looking for second best is as you all confirmed....there is no second best red crabs remain the top bait having said that...this is the main reason red crabs are getting less and less is we can find a second best (if any), then we could give red crabs a chance to increase in population anyway, that's just a reflection cheers bertrand
