ETTY
Happy Easter Raider's, I hope evryone is enjoying the long weekend and getting plenty of the good stuff in. Now the question!!! I bought two Christmas Tree lures from the local tackle shop to start some trolling/casting in Bate Bay. Not knowing much about them i realised today all they are is the lure with no hook & etc??? How do I rig them up so I'm ready to fish - hopefully on Monday??? Thanks in advance - any help is very much appreciated. Elliot
james1990
Hi mate, what size are the lures? I am assuming they are between 10-20cm. My chrissy tree lures that are between 7-19cm are rigged on 50lb-80lb trace with a 4/0-5/0-6/0 suicide hook. Any trace above 50lb i normally crimp but a uni knot can be used too, i use about 60cm of trace. That is just how i use them and it seems to work ok for me. I troll them from about 5knots- 10knots. Im sure the other raiders will be able to help you more on this topic. Good luck with the fishing cheers james
ETTY
Cheers for the reply James, but I'm still confused! Do you pass line through the front of the lure and have it extending out the rear, then attach a hook. If I'm barking up the wrong tree could you kindly guide me to the correct one!!!!! If I'm barking up the wrong tree could you kindly guide me to the correct one!!!!! thats correct mate. you basically want the end of your hook sitting near the back of the skirt or a bit towards the middle. if you're only doing headlands etc a couple of crimps or some rubber beads etc will help space this out for you. How do you set the length so that the hook hangs out the back??? (not sure what you mean by rubber beads)
wildfish
just wondering if you have the whole lure or just a rubber skirt? leader goes threw metal head then tie hook on, with or without plastig bead! any more questions dont hesitate to ask! also you can have a look at ur tackle shop they should have plenty pre rigged! james1990
A platsic bead is normally used to prevent the line being damaged at the terminal by the head of the lure. cheers james
johnno
Also the beads help to space the hook down the skirt . so the hook is in the correct spot on the skirt. It also depends on what length skirts as you may need a double hook setup but most small skirts should only need single hook with 1 bead maybe 2 or 3 beads Edited April 8, 2007 by johnno

Guest Big-Banana
Use straight trolling hooks as well mate. Suicides have an offset eye and bent shank which aren't any good for trolling.
Guest DV8
Big banana is dead right. Do not use off set hooks as they will twirl round and round and round and leave you in an almighty mess. Davo
TheDiko
I like the Owner Jobu hooks for skirts. Super Super sharp which is what you need if you want a nice clean hook up. IFS
Nathan L
Jobus are great hooks but for price vs practicality they're not ideal mustad o'shaugnessy 34007 are stainless, have a fine gauge and are inexpensice (~$1 ea compared to $5-6 for jobus) if you're only using 10 kg line of less they won't give you any dramas and will last ages just make sure you give them a quick touch up with a stone before fishing
