  1. Another thing you may want to think about when setting up your teasers is what you are going to tease with you favourite marlin lure with a massive cupped face may raise them but when your trying to wind it in as fast as you can it can cause a bit of an issue when it digs in hard : )
  2. sounds like a great trip mate well done... when you had the blue on dont be surprised if it was another fish striking the lure that had worked its way up the line as it has happened before. sounds like a good fish too.. incidently did u happen to keep that baby marlin and freeze it? julian pepperell and the gang would certainly be very interested in it if you have Col ------- CCGFC
  3. Kael, that is awesome mate! lee told me you got a nice one down there.. congrats on the fish it is an absolute horse. definetly a trophy fish great fish to break in the alphas too! Col
  4. not necessarily. pretty good way to have a plastic with a hidden weight system on a bigger and heavier level... im a fan of using those hidden weight jigheads specially when fishing boat hulls as they dont make as much osund if u accidently hit one and given alot of fish eat on the drop it makes them swim down nicely specially those banana prawn gulps! unfortunately if you want to use the hidden weights in bigger plastics or just use heavier weight you have to compromise as plastics are only so thin and wont handle some fat weight in there guts. certainly a good way to get ur jig head hidden using a slick rig and having a lighter head makes them sink a bit slower which gives it that tasty realistic action yum yum
  5. mate congrats on the fish. i have heard u can get bass on the coast but i havent had much luck good to see some real solid fish there. theres still hope! certainly worth the effort you have put in to find them. well done mate Col
  6. ill be there either on "The Force" or "shez cranky" bring it on!
  7. Hey Roberta, lots of flies will work on bream. small clousers, crazy charlies, baited breath, jelly prawns, small baitfish profiles like surf candys etc and even wooly buggers. all the above are a sinking fly, i normally use an intermediate line in the estuary unless im surface fishing. surface flys small poppers work a treat i have a couple of tiny crease flys that really work well. Flathead you cant go past the chartreuse and white clouser. bit of lead to get it down and to make it puff up a bit of sand. its a great change to get them on the fly. just watch those exxy lines round the racks. i mostly fish a 4wt for bream pending location! but flatties because i use heavier flys i use a 7/8 wt on a sinking line. Col
  8. have fun done there warnie... be meaning to get down for that one... was spose to fish last years but mate pulled out because of the ordinary weather. some reason bad weather goes hand in hand with that tournament. from reports down south should be a few 70kg + kegs like previous years. goodluck mate Col

    Sea Sickness

thats very interesting warnie! just goes to show that it can be something else that knocks you around... It also can be from the boats themselves... I dont get sea sick on trailer boats really anymore, its the different motion on big boats that affects me. it could be that im used to trailerboats as i did my first 4 years gamefishing in them and have only done the odd trip out on the bigger boats (more so now but they have been spread out and mostly tournaments, where as my trailer boat fishing was every weekend..

    Sh#t Happens

Carl, mate that is horrible. not much i can say to soften it for you. as you say that is ****ed. hopefully repairs will go smoothly and you will be back in the water in no time.. so the cause was the borrower didnt tie her off properly?? Col
  13. Hi matt, thanks for that. i will have to give these prawn lookin things a go too how do they handle a few fish? the jewie i got wasnt a mark on the plastic and ive been using gulp alot and a couple of bites and you gotta put a new one on. hopefully these are a bit more robust. Col
  14. Hi guys, bought a couple of packs of Wave Worm plastics the other day. so far so good. they smell like aniseed and every time i take one out im tempted to eat them. you should see these 9 inch tiki shadicks in the water they glow big time. i reckon they would be a great sluggo alternative to you lucky people that have kings growing on trees. its good to see something other than gulp and squidgy does work. (i was pretty hesitant) I also got some 3.5 inch shrimp looking things i reckon will be gun on flathead anyone used these before?? p.s. they work
  15. dandas browns mountain is an underwater mountain that rises up to about 150 fathoms it is about 22nm east of sydney it is about 5nm past the shelf
  16. Daniel, I think its best to try and keep it pretty simple front up. what gear will you be running should ultimately make your decision in what hooks you are running if you're just fishing 24kg then the shackle rigs with the mustads or mustad/jobu combo will work well. if you're fishing 37 and beyond then its worth looking at something a bit chunkier. all relative to where you are fishing adn the size of the fish you expect to encounter. going too heavy hoping for that beast to come along might make you miss a few smaller ones. Why do you think you will need to toothpick your lures? do you think the extra weight in the hooks might make them not swim as well as they should? just interested to hear what you say. ive never toothpicked my lures but have heard a few people doing it... if you have that lumo out you need a joe yee apollo evil out there too (blues love it!!)
  17. Guys dont forget how sounders work and that some fish just dont show up well on them. fish like jews kings etc have a nice big swim bladder to bounce off. spending alot of time reading your manual and mucking around with the sounder on the water can very very worth the time.
  18. I think you will find that is down to the age of the boat and its history... if you find one thats free of rot and osmosis they are good solid boats and will last a lifetime if looked after. coupled with an inboard they are a great outside boat with the extra weight Col
  19. theres a handy waterproof version of this chart along with how to identify the species in a booklet style thing that hendersons australia makes. well worth the $20 they retail for
  20. Yep what you are doing on strike is fine. just making sure you werent stopping dead straight away etc I know in my seafarer we normally fished 2 up with the occasional 3 up so when we had a strike we were all too busy, the last thing that happened was the rod to be picked up. as Red has said SL12's or Katanas are great hooks for lure trolling for 15kg and under. if you use them on any higher line class you will straighten alot of them. also take warning that if you're heavy on the trace they will straighten. a good release hook and they certainly bite in well. that first one is always the hardest but it certainly gets easier after that one. stick with it. Col
  21. badluck on the fish mate. what hooks are you running in your lures? one thing you should really always have at the ready is something to pitch to a fussy striped marlin. if you see him out there following or swiping at it with his bill try to give teh lure some more action. failing that. have a pitch bait ready. be it a livey a stitched dead bait hell we even switched one to 6 pilchards threaded onto a circle hook....... lure conversion rates are always pretty poor on stripeys even with super light gauge katanas etc etc they are just sloppy eaters... id also be interested to hear what you guys do when you have a strike? i.e. do you stop the boat straight away etc gotta go out there with a gameplan and make sure everyone knows what they are doing when..
  22. Warnie, It's always that decision you make on the day is the hardest thing... and I always seem to make the wrong one. Stripeys are such sloppy eaters like you say switching was probably the go. but you know what its like when you're switching. you gotta make sure your crew have constant focus and isnt really for the inexperienced crew. on true blue we have had mixed results lure switching..... its an interesting concept which has sort of worked but i guess u couldnt really call it switching... its confusing but with having mostly an inexperienced crew i think has help us pin a couple (but still a lower conversion rate than bait and switch in my book) that we may have missed due to unattention. pm me if u want more info..though youve been doing this stuff alot longer than i have, so im sure your tactics work better! Nudge as you know that gamefishing rules have been around for a long time now and there hasnt been major changes to the rules since when they were founded. especially one the classification of gamefish. god knows some should be changed with todays technology. yes blue sharks are worth some good points IF they are targetted in the right line class. if you have done a bit of capture fishing you know that its not just stick a bait out on some gear and gaff whatever eats it. alot of thinking goes into it. making sure you only take those fish that will weigh on the right gear etc... blue sharks won the capture division but how many times have you seen a tag and release division won by the boat tagging a couple of <1kg dolphin fish(vermin) to put them in front for the win........
  23. ahh of course... some reason i thought the broadys only had the marlin broadbill logo on the cab and that was it.... how many did you guys get for the weekend?? shoulders a bit better hey, thanks for asking hopefully might be good in a few weeks and can get a shot at a late fish.
  24. congrats to Jamie for winning champion capture. great result for him in his new boat carnage. yes capture was won by a couple of docile blue sharks.. but as makaira has said if you wanted to take out capture you would have fished 37 or even 24kg for those blues to make it worth while and get MAXI points. now if they had fished 6kg for those blues.............. :) looks like a great weekend by the sounds of the weather and the fishing warnie were you living the high life and fishing out of broadbill?? Col
