Squid Taking Jigs From The Sides

Hi all

Was out squidding and many times I would get the squid or cuttlefish to where I can see it. As I watch it strike the jig, it always seem to take the jig from the side and not from the back where the hooks are.

Is there something wrong with my technique or are the squid/cuttlies getting smarter?

Anyone else experienced this?

mate if they happens just give the rod a quick jerk and it will get the bastards hooked

Nah mate, they arnt getting smarter..It happens quite alot to me also, i do the same as netic. You can also purchase jigs with extra barbs on the back of the jig.

Same here Katong.. I see the little mothers coming in from the side and grabbing hold of the head.. little twitch and they will slip down onto the prongs.

I have some of thost Yo Zuri smooth plastic jogs and they are great for "side grabbers" as they slip down on the smooth surface.

ahhh yes i see them little cuttles shoot out at a million miles an hour to side grab my jigs too... ive been unsuccessful in getting them though... was thinking to myself this 'sight fishing' is a new experience... you can see them there, you can see them take your jig, and just cant seem to make them end up in yoru stomach... hmmm....
