dunc333
crazed fish dude i read this and this and im actually gobsmacked what i read ,so first of all after first mechanic could not reslve prob he was sent to the tohatsu dearler in sydney ,alexander botany way and coffed atleast $300.00 there told prob fixed, but it wasnt ,when put in water again ,so tohatsu dealer said he contacted japan and they had no answers ,so he sent him to a mechanic in the picnic poit area ,he turned a screw and all was good again up and down the river for 15mins so he paid him and thought all was good till next fishing day, same prob ,then next 2 mechs check work that had been invoiced had been done which they said it had ,and paid them and said all was well ,but next in water same prob ,thanks again for your insight fish dude ,sounds bad ,but i dont know how i can tell the old bugger about all this info you showed me ,where do i send him
a boat
Hi Dunc, it really sound like your mates engine is overheating when working hard, but with all the work people have done on it I find it hard to beleive someone has not been able to fix it. My suggestion to your mate would be to remove the thermostat and run it over the range it overheats at and see if it still does overheat. I am not for a minute suggesting it should run permantly without a thermostat, but you need to determine if has a restriction in the water passages of the powerhead and the easiest thing for you to do yourself is remove the thermostat. Also, unless already done, a good thing to do would be to remove the cylinder head, giving it a good check out for blockages and re-install with a new head gasket. Considering the age of the outboard this will be good preventage maintance anyway and agian not an real expensive thing to do-the labour would only be a couple of ours and the gasket is not that dear. If I can be of help please call me on 9456-1444, or do what I suggest and let us know if it overheats wiothout the thermostat in. Cheers, Huey. Motor was only 4 years old and serviced regularly. I gave up spending money on it. Now I have an etec and couldn't be happier! Anyways, enought about my stories. If you are located in Sydney, there is an old man at Newtown called Warren who operates Cohoe Marine. They just deal in Tohatsu's and he knows these motors better anyone else in Sydney. I'd highly recommend you speak to them if you have not already. Good luck.
Guest IWANNABROCK
I had a 25 mariner(yamaha) same problem, tried everything then pulled head off and found was full of sand, salt causing blockage, new head gasket cleaned out head and around bores absolutely perfect after that. this motor was late 80's model and old bloke I bought it off said was always flushed.
