Ken A
I was wondering if any of the members here has access to a machine shop ? The reason being is that I cannot find my lapping plate which I use for doing up drag washers. What I need is a piece of steel plate about 4 - 6 mm thick & and around 150 - 200mm square that has been surface ground so its nice & flat. Can anybody help me out ? Guest Jocool
I'll rummage through my garage later Ken, and see if I have anything appropriate.
pogo
Dont know if it helps but I do my drag washers on a small sheet of glass about the same size as you describe, just place a piece of fine wet and dry emery paper on and use oil or water to lubricate and remove cuttings. Your local glazier should be able to help you out, get a thick bit if you can, mine is 5 mm I think. Regards Pogo
Guest Jocool
I was just about to suggest what Pogo said! I have heard that glass is the preffered material for doing the lapping of drag washers.
Ken A
Thanks for the suggestions fellas Glass is OK but it isn't perfectly flat unfortunately it doesn't give a really perfect flat washer & thats why I always used a bit of plate that had been run under a surface grinder. When I was working it wasn't a problem I could just get one made in the toolroom but now ????? We must have 1 fitter / machinist here or am the lone tradesman?
