james7 Posted February 1, 2008 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Poor old "Pick-A-Box" Syd (as Jewgaffer calls him) arrived in South West Rocks having towed his boat the 500 odd km from Sydney. He was desperate to make up for last year when he only managed two short trips in his boat because of big seas. When he did get out, he was busted off by something big after a short ten minute fight. This January he was going to make amends. Of course the storms arrived with Syd and his mood matched the weather. Even when it stopped raining the swell was still too big. The seas calmed but the water was still very dirty. Eventually we made it out across the bar. After a short session at the bait grounds we headed a few km off the gaol and Syd put out a live yakka. Ten minutes later the reel starts screaming zzzzzzzzzzzzzz and Syd grabs the rod determined to win the fight this time. Unfortunately this "monster from the deep" bit through the 200lb leader after about 30 seconds. It just shredded it. It must have been a "toothy critter"! (Anyone have any ideas what it might have been?) Anyway (after much cursing) we headed off to Fish Rock where we watched two blokes on a jet ski troll up a few rats. We could see the kings in the water but they were just not interest in anything we threw at them. Syd eventually managed to get one but it was only 62cm so back he went to grow some more. You'd have thought it would have settled down. Didn't get a chance to fish inside the rock wall ay Pete. Good onya Syd ! That kingfish looks healthy enough. It'll finish up a really fat chunk in a can with a few basic vitamins injected by next year !! They taste great in a bowl !!
