Rod And Reel Combo

Hooked-Up

Recommended Posts

I've had a look at that exceller oceana and its a good tough, rugged real which should be great for kings. I would've thought it would it would be a fair bit of overkill on flatties, even big ones. I nearly got the Tierra but went a bit cheaper and got the exceller plus, yet to test it on kings, but its great on flatties. Would think the tierra is a good option for covering both fish. As for a rod it'll depend on whether you are going to be using bait or lures more, lures then maybe a heavier Starlo Spin stix, i have the 4-8kg which is a good rod, 7ft long for good casting, if baiting then maybe a silstar crystal blue?

Cheers

Recently got a Daiwa Tierra (Rod) with an exceller 2000 reel (can spool up to 10lb) comes with a second spool...

Guy at the shop said it was plenty for chasing kings... haven't tried it on the kingies yet...

Does a great job on the bream, and flatties..

Shouldn't hurt the budget too much..

Been looking for a second outfit myself, but i'm thinking a 2500 or a 3000 would be more than enough on the larger species..

Hi throw me a fish. You may as well ask a retarded blackfish fisherman if he would use a 10lb outfit on kingfish rather than this guy at the shop.

It might be good fun setting your own standards for the landing the biggest fish on the lightest possible gear before you get busted up. If you happen to hook up one of the larger kingfish specimums or a decent size jewfish it could be a bit late in proceedings to tie on this so called second free spool.

I don't think that guy in the shop would sell even sell his 5500's to the Stella and TLD overhead boys even if he offered a free rod and a cap with a propeller on it to to suit kingfish specialists or even to retarded jew fishermen :D

Cheers

Thanks Jewgaffer...

Primary use for my stick is bream, flatties, choppers, Jackets, etc... so it does its job for 100% of my fishing at the moment...

6lb has held out for most of my fishing, if I decide to give the kings a go, I'll throw on the 10lb 'before' I head out and just take my chances...

Like I said though looking for a second outfit for Kings (which I haven't started targeting yet)...

Probably need a few bust offs to get a feel for exactly what it is I need ...

Cheers,

i would be asking questions like where willy ou be fishing?

dont get me wrong its great fun to land pelagics on bream and bass gear but if you are targeting kings landbased and the chances are you will be fishing in places with lots of objects that the kings can do you on, you will need a outfit with balls to turn fish and keep them away from structure.

lucky for me ive had a cracker land based season and ive already broken rods been busted off millions of times and in some sessions landed 10+ 75cm+ models of kingies. im running a wilson 3-6kg rod with daiwa cy spooled with 25lb its a bit unbalanced in terms of rod to line but i find the wilson has a bit of balls when compared to other 3-6kg rods, this setup doesnt have much balls and really you're relying on that particular fish to fight clean and tire out by doing a few runs and then turning him and winding him in, you dont have much say in the fight at all.

if out on the boat you could hook up to kings on bream gear all day everyday and you can make the fight last hours, but even a nice sized sambo will take you on for 5-10 minutes on 6lb ive learnt.

my next setup im looking at a daiwa tierra 4000 with a 7ft 10-15kg of some sort, the reel has decent rated max drag and at least it will have some balls and puts more power in your hands.
