Put the tinny in at Mooney boat ramp at 0630 and fired up the engine to make sure all was OK before my mate turned up at 0700.

I was about 20 metres off the boat ramp and I cast my rod out just to wet the line.......BANG........I hooked a nice flatty on a BARE HOOK!!!

I had a feeling this was going to be a good day.

My mate turned up and and I told him he already owed me three beers - I had the first, the biggest and the most - and he hadn't even gotten out of the car!!!

Anyway, after loading him into the boat we headed down river to the entrance to Mullet Creek and fished there for a couple of hours for a healthy feed of fish - we managed 5 keepers - 4 flatties and one nice bream that came in just under a kilo.

Can't wait to get out there again.

Baits Pedro, we fished with Hawkesbury prawns and bottle squid.

Drifted around, so we covered a lot of ground in 5 hours.

We threw back a few - my mate got a nice long tom......although it wasn't as big as my Brothers long tom a month ago. It was a metre long and THICK.

He had heaps of fun landing that!!!

djamc,

is there a secret to catching them? We've now caught (boated) two long toms in our last two outings. One was about 40 cms, the other about a metre.

They were serious entertainment on light gear...especially the big one!!

We let both go, firstly because we were'nt sure if you can eat them and secondly we didn't know how to 'prepare' them for the table.

Any suggestions?? Do they have many bones??

Lizard1, yes the entrance to Mullet Creek is at the railway bridge and we were drifting.

yeah

they always seem to be a bit of a rare catch really dont they.

they are a bit like pike really.

they seem to hang around wharfs, rocky outcropings etc etc

i actually found a good method. if u berley up hard,

and theres a tiny bit of a current

ill have a soft plastic out with a very light weight heavy jig

and use a plastic that has quite a bit of movement in the tail.

ive picked up quite a few that way, also have a bait out under a float in your burley slick.

when they are around they will pretty much attack anything.

i used to chase them all the time in brisbane water when i was little.

goodluck!
