Rough guess Cotton Mouth Trevally (Bassard-Hull's Trevally) "Uraspis secunda"

Inside their mouth is really white like a piece of cotton.

http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/fishfact...sh/usecunda.htm

Only seen them come from deep water spots like the Fads etc ....... though anything is possible as I recon those Trevally species move around a bit as a mate got a great Pennant Trevally up at North Narrabeen a couple of years ago.

It does look like a trevally but i don't know of any trevally having fins like that...

It does have a hint of a surgeon fish about it even though it doesn't look like one, maybe its a surgeon trevally mutation fish

The sharp tail is what a surgeon has......

Many years back we caught a similar fish wide of Sydney around an offshore FAD.

We brought it in for identification, and the good Dr Julian P identified it as "uraspis uraspis", which is of the same family to this recent catch.

I cannot remember much about it's set of dentures, but do remember it fought well on light gear, and had an amazingly thick coating of mucous/slime on it.

Cheers,

Bob.
