LittleNoah Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Hi all, So as the title says I been having trouble with the motor stalling all the time while in the water at idle and then being a little hard to start. The reason I said while in the water is because it idle beautifuly and starts easy on the muffs in the driveway. It doesn't matter if it's in gear or neutral, still the same, when you back off the revs it usually idles for about 30sec or so, maybe more or less sometimes, then stalls. It then wont start without choke and some accelerator. It starts easy like that, but you shouldn't need choke or accelerator when it's warm and it never used to be like this to start. Once it was warm you hardly had to pull the cord and away it went, but it still starts easy like that on muffs in the driveway, I don't get why it is so different on the water compared to on the muffs. Any ideas?
pelican Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 The dfference in the drive on muffs to the water is exhaust back pressure. When on muffs you have less exhaust backpressure as the exhaust isn't 1 foot underwater. The motor in your case is not producing enough power in idle in the water to continue running. Can be lack of fuel or many other issues simple or complex. Weak spark , too much gap or too little. timing out partially clogged idle jet, gum, gelled fuel or grit issue with a reed idle speed screw not adjusted correctly carbs no longer in sync loss of compression - sticking rings too much oil in fuel and poor fuel problems as noted above. Thermstat not working Give us an idea of your mechanical nouse and experience and if it hasn't been serviced you may as well get it done so you have a safe and reliable motor for summer. Be helpful if you gave year and model number approx hours and if it is a 2 or 4 stroke . Pel

a boat Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Hi, good ideas from the guys and I agree with them. You will probably find that the engine idle mixture screw is set too lean. Screw it out about a 1/4 of a turn and see if that makes a difference. Also if the engine is over 10 years old and the carby has not been serviced it might be a good idea to give it a once over and also replace impeller, make sure you have the right plugs and the thermostat is operating as designed. Yes also post the age of her. Cheers, Huey.
LittleNoah Posted November 3, 2008 Author Posted November 3, 2008 thanks for all the tips, yeah it is more than 10yr old, it's a 96 model.
