Shimano Overhead

I am planning to target estuary jewfish mainly in the hawkesbury, and going to start a more specialised tackle collection. Was looking at the shimano tyrnos 20, just wondering if it is too over kill and can you spool it with 50-60lb braid? Hopefully to tackle with one of these brusiers once i practise my bait catching techniques.

Obviosuly i havnt used one before...maybe ill get my local tackle store to explain how to use a lever drag. Was also considering the tekota with the star drag as i have read it may be easier to pick up the technique.

Hey Justin,

I recently bought a Tyrnos 16 for use on various fish like jew and kings in the harbour. Its loaded with 40pd braid so its not exactly what you want but very similar. I had never used an overhead before and was also worried about it especially cos it doesnt have a level wind to make sure the line goes on the spool properly. Its a piece of cake. Dont worry about it you pick it up in about ten minutes. When i fight a fish with it i dont even bother. Next time i drop it to the bottom though i try and rectify any uneven line that exists on the spool. The lever drag is also pretty simple. its a matter of pushing a lever forward or back similar to how you would use drag in an eggbeater(instead of turning the thing on top of the reel clock/anticlockwise). I went against the Tekota as i heard that lever drag was superior to star. Not sure if thats true. If you plan to do any casting with it forget it!!! I just drop baits over the edge of the boat, live or dead. Hope that helps a little.

Cheers. Mike.

Hi there,

i used to have a tekota 700 spooled with 50lb braid (before it was stolen :1badmood:) and it was a great reel, I would definately recommend the level wind if you only intend on using it off a boat as casting distance is not that important. I have since bought a Calcutta te 700 and its a beautiful reel but more than double the price, but it casts brilliantly.

also check out the daiwa saltist, my cousin uses one for Jews and in my opinion its alot nicer than the tekota. They come in level wind also which saves you having to guide the line back on.

Guys just my opinion but i would want something i can cast fairly well for fishing for jewies even from a boat and i dont know how well larger overheads like the Tyrnos will do that unless you're very experienced. i know couldn't do it very well so thats why i use spinning reels. If you dont intend on casting or you are good at casting bigger overheads you can obviously disregard this post.

Tekotas, Trinidads and Calcuttas are probably more suited to casting if you want to go the road of overhead.

If it was me i'd go with a biggish spinning reel like at least a 6500 Baitrunner or if you want to fish 50 to 60lb properly an appropriately sized (8000 or up) Speros, Saragossa or equivalent Penn or Daiwa.

I personally use Shimano 6500 Baitrunners with a range of 20lb mono to 50lb braid but this would struggle for serious kings close to structure because they just dont have the drag pressure unless you grab the spool obviously.

Just make sure the rod and components (reel seats, runners etc.) can handle the drag that you will apply

with the reel.

Good luck

Tyrnos are nice smooth reels and lever drags are more easier to use than a star drag as you would normally set the drag at home to suit the line you got before you go fishing and atleast when you have a big thumper at the end of the line you know that the max drag you set before wont snap the line.

Get the 2 speed.

I know that if I was hooked up to a big jew or king that I wouldn't want to be putting my thumb anywhere near braid under load to lay line evenly on a spool.

I use level wind o/heads on jews & kings etc. I only use lever drag reels with mono on marlin & tuna.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers,

Grant.

I have a tyrnos 20 load with 50lb, it has never seen water before prsonally I think it is a very nice reel waiting for the fin to start.

How ever for jew and king work I would think a big bait runner woild be more then sufficent for the task you want, alternatively have a look at the new sheros and saragosa both very nice reel with plenty of fish stoping power, match it with a jigging matching rod and would be a very nice versatile combo, you can use this for live baiting, jigging, down rigging or trolling.

Cheers,

SZ

hi justin,

i went through a similar decision a while ago.

check out this thread http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.ph...8&hl=tekota

theres some good replies esp from kelvin,oz and cfd....

i ended up getting the thunnus(similar to 6500baitrunner) and soon after scored a tekota 600..

the baitrunner is great reel but felt undergunned on some real big kings (upgraded drag and much better)

the tekota is an awesome reel but star drag is downside when needed to up drag quickly when getting smoked by big kings.. i am now using a tyrnos 30 2speed with 50lb mono as my kingy/tuna/jew reel and love it..

the lever drag really helped recently to stop a big king that was gonna reef me and star drag(tekota) woulda had me in all sorts trouble as it had done previously...

its hard to decide as all above reels do the job but have different pros/cons...

my tyrnos is the go to reel but is heavier than others,i put a tiagra handle on it and this helps heaps to balance it in frenzied fight..

as for braid on oh that doesn't have level wind....mmmm.. i think you should really think hard about that as braid peeling off at a rate of knots is a bit dangerous in my opinion if you have to guide it on.... just my opinion though... my tekota has 50lb fins but level wind keeps my fingers attached where i want the to stay......

hope this helps in some way...if ya need any more details let me know..

good luck with whatever you decide...

cheers...steve....

Thankyou everyone for your replies! Many of my misconceptions have been corrected. What i missed out in my post was that i will be fishing from a boat. That being said, there has been quite alot of helpful suggestions and conflicting ideas. Currently i have 2, 3yo daiwa spinning reels BG90, one of which has been used to groper. I think they are more than sufficient in tackling MOST hawkesbury jew.

I havnt yet intended to aim for kings but this so far my motivation is in the pursuit for a jewey. Truthfully, iv watched jewfish secrets one too many times and i think im just imitating their tackle (not that i know what they were using). Now with all the input here and from roostermans old post, i can see they were probably using level wind overheads loaded with braid.

One last thing that is bugging me the most is, is there a whole new aspect for catching jewfish on overheads than compared to spinning reels?. I also wondering...why on the dvd are the big live baits usually on the overheads.

>I am considering the tekota 600/700, possibly the diawa saltist.

Cheers,

Justin :1fishing1:
