Mercury Hours Gauge

Hi people, recently bought an hours gauge to replace my old one. My old gauge has 44 hours on it but can't be seen as the plastic is damaged. My new gauge has 0000 hours, so I'm wondering what is the best way to get it to clock 44 hours?

Should I just attach my new gauge to a 12v battery and let it run? Thanks :)

Fit it on the boat and leave the ignition on for 44 hours .
