Does Fishing Cause Pain?

Hi Raiders,

Apart from the usual spikes, cuts, bumps & falls etc, not to mention the pain of losing a good fish to stupidity, impatience or a poorly tied knot, I've just been diagnosed with rotator cuff syndrome in my left shoulder.

I can't help but wonder if it's due to the constant dropping and lifting of my rod whilst flicking plastics for flatties.

Has anyone else had experience of this or something similar? If so, how did it work out?

I'd say it would be very unlikely that would be the cause of your pain. Putting the action on soft plastics (I think that's what you meant) is more a repetitive strain that would affect your wrist or elbow generally before your shoulder. Did the doctor say whether it was a torn rotator cuff, or a strained one? If it was torn at some stage that would give you trouble and would've been probably due to some sort of trauma at some stage...

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm off for X-Ray and Ultrasound this arvo....hopefully then will find out the nature of the problem and the appropriate treatment.

I do know that the action I use with the rod I have does strain my shoulder and perhaps I may need to look at using a different set up: at present the winch is mounted well up the shaft of the rod so that I hold it under my left arm and so use the shoulder when lifting the lure off the bottom..

Same prob for me for the last 2mth.

Couldn't put my arm into my shirt or even lift a cup of tea let alone caste with it.

Very painful and annoying.

Luckily was just treatable without the knife.

Taken a while though and nearly better now.

Definately not a repetative stain injury and is a trauma injury.

Good luck with it.

That sucks to hear about your shoulder mate,

But I always loved that Halco poppers add that you seen in the fishing mags where it has the 3 sizes of lures with the smallest one saying "your arms and wrists hurt" the mid size one saying "your wrists arms and back hurts" and the largest lure having the caption "your chiropractors arms and back hurts" haha

Seems to be the month of shoulder injuries , I am on compo now for a shoulder injury , which sadly prevents me from fishing.

When you say Rotator Cuff Syndrome , have you just strained it , or actually put a small tear in one of the muscles?

A tear is typically caused by a sudden shock or jolt , whereas a strain could be the result of a repetitive action ( such as jigging ) .

Hi,

The doc referred me for an X-Ray and an ultrasound. Halfway through the ultrasound the radiographer said, "I might just get the doctor to come and have a look at this."

I didn't too much like the sound of that.

It turns out I've torn some cartilage which has then trapped a tendon in the wrong place pinching it when I raise my arm. I'v worn a hole in the tendon and am looking at surgery asap.

No fishing, swimming or surfing for a while! I'll just have to enjoy a bit of armchair fishing on Fisraider!

this is why i think its important to stay in shape.. fishing is quite physically intensive, so looking after yourself can only help.

Also, if its a torn rotator cuff, u'll know about it..... i used to be a very serious gym junkie, and ive had my fair share of shoulder injuries... u cant even lift your arm with a TRC.

Tell you what, when your healed a few photos of the scar in the bar section to just to show off wouldn't be bad!

I've got a ripper over my right eye, bragging rights = 25 stitches.

Rotator cuff = not nice. My brother gave up a promising career in pro rugby in the UK thanks to his shoulders.

Certainly I think that rods are poorly designed when it comes to end use. It generally doesn't effect me until I hook up but pressure on the wrists is one thing I hate. In the rod or the reel hand it seems to happen the same. Generally only on good fish, long fights etc.

I guess that these wont help you that much but the z-grip and custom handles from REEL COLOR in USA look lke the siznit for heavy tackle. Just like a bycep curl at the gym, any one used one. www.reelcolors.com

I seem to get major earache about half an hour after a session and sometimes it goes on for days! ;)

Hey Chrisg i got a earache once wen i got home after fishing but it was because i was bashed on the ear by the misses with a flattie i had caught for not doin the lawn

If you do a lot of fishing particularly in cold conditions make sure you wear gloves to protect your hands from the cold, as continual exposure to cold can affect your hands as you get older ......Also use surgical gloves when handling baits and every time you are ready to bait up, run your gloved hands either thru the burley ingredients you are fishing with or rub your gloves into the left overs and the fluids on your bait board as the odours in the oil in human hands are known to turn certain fish off....

How is that shoulder going?? Hope the surgery has done the trick & it is functioning like new again. It can take quite a while for the full range of movement tho, so hope that you are up & fishing again soon?

Shoulders can be incredibly painful - Keith damaged his AC Joint in a bike fall & it took months of rehab for the pain to go (no surgery luckily) and I had a frozen shoulder back in 2000 (from lawnmowing, not fishing!!) and had it maniupulated under anaesthetic (my arm was thrown around the room to break the adhesions) and it also took months of physio & exercise to come good, but no worries now!

Looking forward to your reports

Thanks for asking. Went to Sydney to see the specialist and was told should be able to fix it with physio. A few trips to the physio to get a graded series of exercises was next.

The the hard bit. Constant repetitions: up to 180 per day. Hard to maintain a regular routine on them but got stuck into it during the school holidays and it's now pretty much better. I don't have the flexibility I'd like to get, but it's coming along. I'm back in the pool and getting close to 1 km per day freestyle. A few months ago a few metres of freestyle was out of the question.

An interesting fact turned up on the way through: shoulder injuries/dislocations are more common that all the other joints put together. Meanwhile two colleagues have succumbed to similar injuries and both required surgery. Yet another managed to get by with physio.

The funny thing is that I can't remember any particlar incident that resulted in the two muscle tears I had.

Glad to hear you didn't have to go under the knife - my doctor here had prolonged my injury for 6 months with TENS machines, accupuncture & ultrasound ...... & it only got worse! The surgeons here wanted me to go under the knife, but i saw a top surgeon at Charlestown near Newcastle, who is pretty well an expert on shoulders & after an injection of steroids into the shoulder, he suggested the manipulation under anaesthetic (only the shoulder/armwas anaethatised ..... I was wide awake!) He may have been surprised with my verbal reaction when I heard the 'cracking' as the adhesions were broken - I thought he'd snapped my bones in half! I took nearly 48hrs for the anaesthetic to wear off & I thought he'd paralysed it! I ended up being in his top 2% of his best ever recoveries after about 4-6 months of exercise/physio. Mine was the left arm too & I am very strongly right handed, so can't work out why I got it. Googling it found that no-one knows how they get it! I can't remember any specific injury, either.

Can you put your hand behind your back & scratch the shoulder blade of the other shoulder? I couldn't even put my hand past my hip prior to the manipulation, as it was so painful (matter of fact, it was putting on my bait bucket that I realised I had a problem ..... then I'd just put it on in the front & swing it round. :biggrin2: Where there is a will .....

Do they have you 'leaning thru a door way'? I had to line the forearms up on the frame of the door, elbows at shoulder height, standing upright, feet together & then lean thru the doorwater. It stretches the shoulder muscles - do it gently.

Keep up the exercise & all will be well
