arpie Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 (edited) An absolute tragedy, Stewy - on the top of the floods - poor old Qld - what have they done to deserve this double whammy? 2 years ago, when we did out 'northern adventure', Tully Heads was our destination as we stayed with an old school friend of Keith's (in his 70s) and he & his wife live one street back from Taylor St in Tully Heads - which was absolutely annihilated when Yasi hit. Far worse than the other towns so highly 'covered' by the media. Ian & Pam had evacuated - Pam to Port Douglas & Ian (after choosing to stay at the house) was forced to evacuate to Tully by police before Yasi hit. We found out this morning that their house is still standing, but flood damaged, we don't know how badly. A 3m Storm Surge (similar to a Tsunami) went throughout the small town of Tully Heads (150 houses & 300 residents) and every house is damaged to some extent, with many totally demolished. Nothing left but the stumps. Full brick houses smashed to bits. REALLY sad. Pretty well the whole community is made up of retirees. I don't know about anyone else, but having already donated to the Qld flood appeal - I don't mind contributing more by way of the Flood Levy. The whole country will feel the effect of the destruction of businesses, especially fruit & veg, over the next 12 months or more - you can't help feeling gutted for all who have been affected. Thank God there has been minimal loss of life with this one. Roberta Edited February 6, 2011 by Roberta
