Sven Graham
Hi I am heading up to Forster first week in March and was wondering if any one could give me any tips on crossing Forster Bar. I have never crossed a bar before...is it a good or bad one to start on? I dont want to go out far, just around the south end of main beach around to the next beach...I believe there is a good bommie there Thank you, Sven

olitay
Do yourself a favor and spend some time on the rockwall watching the bar closely, this will give you an understanding of wave intervals etc. When your confident, take your time, wear jackets and approach with caution. Best advise I can give is to not panic nor go too fast, Ive seen so many people do this causing them to launch into the waves unnecessarily which can toss everyone about. Go slow, use the throttle when you need it and hit it head on. Good luck.

arpie
Hi Sven It doesn't get that bad too often, so don't be too concerned! It is essential that you log in with the Coastal Patrol before heading out & when you get back in. Drop in on them, they are on the right hand side of the breakwall, just past the marina where you are most likely to put your boat in. If there is a dangerous situation developing, they will advise you & if required, will meet up with you off the breakwall & escort you in. They did just this for a buddy recently. ....geez, i don't think I would cross that from the photos i saw. But then again you have to pick your time and your days..... Absolutely!!! Take note of our first reactions when checking out the bar - if in doubt, DON'T!! The right hand side (same side as the Coastal Patrol) is the safer side to go in & out from.
